McKenna: Nothing Imminent But Work Continues
Friday, 11th Aug 2023 16:49

Town boss Kieran McKenna says no further additions to his squad are imminent but that work will continue until the end of the window to find players who will improve the squad at the right price.

So far, the Blues have added four players, Jack Taylor, Cieran Slicker, George Hirst and loanee Omari Hutchinson, but with CEO Mark Ashton having recently said he anticipates two or three more recruits before the window closes on September 1st.

“I don’t think there’s anything very imminent,” McKenna said. “Of course, this has been a very busy week for myself and the coaching staff with three games in the first six days.

“Once we get through Saturday, it will be a good time to sit and review where we’re at with a couple of weeks to go on the window and having seen everybody play now and also having gone through the first two Championship games.

“The club are still working very hard, I’m involved in that work as well, but at the moment the situation is the same as it was.

“We have a big and competitive squad, we want to improve that squad, there aren’t so many players out there at the right price that can improve what we have here but we’ll work very hard until the last day of the window to find those players and bring them here.”

We're Championship new boys, fresh from four years in League One. We're not going to have the status or draw of those clubs just relegated from the Prem, or who were challenging for the play-offs last season.

Town are likely to have a decent budget, but not an enormous one. We do have to satisfy FFP, after all. Quite rightly, IMO, we are not prepared to pay over the odds.

We all think McKenna's an outstanding young manager, but from the outside he's very new and inexperienced. His profile is not yet big enough to attract players who might not otherwise be inclined to come.

This is the reality of our situation, however rosy things may feel on the inside. Another couple of wins during August may do a lot to get deals over the line in the final days, showing prospects that we really are going somewhere.

Anyone who thinks we are suddenly going to start paying way more than we have already paid, and if we don't we will sit in the middle of the Championship forever, simply doesn't understand the way our club is run. They can include agents and selling clubs besides some on here. We are now a very good club, very well run, and above all we have a well-worked plan that will be stuck to.

I see blueboy is back with moronic comments again. How can we not sell the project in your opinion exactly?? We were getting higher gates in league one than most in the championship? We play football the right way? We’re one of the favourites with a lot of pundits and bookies to challenge top 6? We’ve a bright young manager everyone talks about? But to your absolute tosh that’s not enough sell!??
Guys remember we MAY be looking at premier league fringe players same as most other championship sides and as Ashton also said when those prem sides are nearer finalising their squads loads of players will become available and they’ll filter down into the championship and then other championship clubs will also be willing to sell. Not buying someone for the sake of it is more prudent and doesn’t mean we’re not ambitious just cautious getting the right players in.

Amazing how many people are prejudging the season ONE match in !!! With some, the negativity is just incredibly. For the record, what Ashton was reported as saying :

CEO Mark Ashton says he expects Town to make two or three more signings at least during this transfer window with a few “down the line”.

The transfer window isn’t over yet, there is nothing about how advance or not negotiations were AND a strong indication that it wouldn’t be immediate. Don’t make of your own versions of what Ashton said ….

M. Ashton has stated and named the dominoe effect. Which I’m hoping started today. Kane to Bayern. Maguire to West Ham. Pavard to Man Utd. Johnny Evans joins us on 12 month contract with further 12 month option.

Naylorsrightboot.Talkimg the usual rubbish asxalways. Ashton didntcsay 3 deals were almost done, at all. He said we are looking to bring in 2 or 3 more. That the market is slow and could well be a domino effect later in the window when premierclgd clubs have started doing their business. So stop posting rubbish.
Oh, here we go. Blueboy1981 appears for the 1st time in ages, just to post his usual negative tripe. Yer, our owners aren't ambitious. They came here, spent millions on ground improvements, spent money on bringing in better players, just to settle for championship football. No aims to go higher. Dont think so do you

Carry blue. Another o e who's got it wrong. Ashton said we are looking to bring 2 or 3 more players in before the end of the window. Nothing about us being close to signing anyone.

Blueboy the 3 clubs you refer have the huge benefits of parachute payments and/or received large incoming transfer fees.
Naylorsrightboot you would have needed to shut yourself off from all that is ITFC the past 2 years to even consider reaching that conclusion.
I’m more than happy to see the 2/3 more-dominoe effect play out. Is there a more attractive Championship club for a player to join currently? I think not.

It doesn’t worry me at all that we’ve “only” signed 4 players. We have a big squad and it’s decent. We don’t need numbers. If we can get two quality players in before the end of the window I’d be happy. Also people moaning about lack of money being spent? There are financial rules we have to follow. We haven’t sold big money players and don’t have premier parachute money. If Coventry hadn’t sold Gyokeres for £20m they wouldn’t be paying £8m for Simms, we won’t be bringing that sort of money in from sales.

blues1 - Ashton also said: "We’re down the line on a few and I hope we get them across the line fairly shortly."

I think most people would take that to mean Town were close to making a signing or two?

CarpyBlue We’re down the line on a few could mean… contact has been made, player and club along with agent knows of our interest………but again could mean everything’s agreed, medical happens tomorrow.
Until signed….nothings done and dusted.

blues1: Ashton said 3 weeks ago that 2-3 we're well down the line. Nothing has materialised, so where are they? I would think one will be here this afternoon only playing in the red and white of Stoke City.
And for all those that down voted me it is a project and there are other championship teams selling their ideas too. Be realistic in the fact that we aren't as big a fish in this league as we were in league 1. I bet they are finding it harder to sell their ideas.

If we have no further incoming players in this window, I think we know Ashton and co. will have done everything possible and in the best interests of the club. However, if the team have a bad run, no doubt, some on here will say it was due to a lack of ambition in the summer transfer market.

I see Ashton continuously talks about it being a tough market to operate in and says that signings are 2/3 weeks away for months. Sheffield Wednesday have had no issues signing 5+ players in the last two weeks. Doesn't seem like such a tough market for them to operate in. Perhaps Ashton and Co blowing smoke up our a*** and unable to compete with majority of clubs in our league.

Grantob92 this song the budgies page. So tell me how are Sheffield wednesday doing with THEIR signings exactly!?? It’s about getting players in who are better than we have now clearly Wednesdays new players aren’t that are they. The most moronic comment on here this year

Monkey_Blue added 00:24 - Aug 13
Grantob92 Who have they signed? Sheff Wed needed numbers given the age of their squad. You forget we didn’t like some clubs have 3,4 or 5 first teamers last season leave because they were loanees.. in fact one of them(Hirst) is now our player. I’m sure the club could have signed a dozen players if we didn’t care what standard or type of player they were. You do also know about the squad restrictions for players over 20? You do know about the financial rules? Given we’ve just won our first 3 games don’t you feel a little silly now?

What the first couple of weeks have shown is that the progress made over the last 18 months already means we can compete in the Championship. We have depth, quality, and what many other clubs don’t have (if they have a new manager and/or are dropping from the Prem and shipping people out), we have stability and momentum. We’re in a solid position squad-wise, additions would be great but given we’ve made 4 signings we shouldn’t panic if the next phase of strengthening comes in January. It’s clear that KMc and Gamechanger 20 know what they’re doing.
