Town Confirm Taylor Signing
Monday, 26th Jun 2023 19:20

Town have confirmed the signing of Jack Taylor from Peterborough United for a fee of just under £1.5 million, as revealed by TWTD earlier this evening.

Taylor, who has signed a three-year deal, was at the club this afternoon to undergo a medical.

“I’m over the moon to sign here,” Taylor told the club site. “I’ve spoken to the manager [Kieran McKenna] on numerous occasions and I’ve not heard a bad word about him. I think the style of play really suits my game and I can’t wait to get the ball rolling.”

McKenna added: “We’re delighted to have Jack in and he is a player who fits the culture we’re continuing to build here.”

“He is hungry and wants to improve and he will bring qualities that add to the group.”

CEO Mark Ashton said: “It’s fantastic to finally have Jack’s signature. We have had to be patient and I am grateful to everyone involved to finally get a top, top player across the line.”

Posh manager Darren Ferguson told his club's official website: “I felt that Jack would be the first to depart given how good a player he is and the interest that there was.

“We signed him from Barnet and he has developed into the player that I thought he would. Working with him over the last five months after coming back to the club, I think he has produced his strongest form.

“He has been outstanding, he is going to a very good club and I feel it is the right time for him to go, he has earned the move.

“I have a good relationship with him, I have spoken to him a few times over the summer and we wish him nothing but the best.

“He has been a great servant for us and nobody can argue that he was a good signing for us — he was an excellent one.

“Once the right offer was received, we didn’t want to stand in his way. I am sure he will go on and do very well.”

Taylor, Town's first signing of the summer, was first targeted by the Blues last summer and then again in January.

Negotiations were revived this summer but with Town eventually becoming frustrated at the lack of progress and, as reported last week, turning their attention to other options, including Derby County’s Jason Knight.

However, the two parties finally came to an agreement over the weekend with the fee initially just under £1.5 million but with the Blues due to pay a small additional sum should they reach the Premier League. A number of other Championship clubs were also understood to have shown interest.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed in March that Town had made four bids for Taylor during the January window, the last almost £2 million.

Versatile 6ft 1in tall midfielder Taylor, who spent seven years with Chelsea’s academy, joined Posh for an initial £500,000 from Barnet, where he had made his senior debut as a 15-year-old, in January 2020 with that fee likely to have increased towards £1 million with top-ups.

Hammersmith-born Taylor, who had another year left on his Peterborough contract, made a total of 130 starts and eight sub appearances for Posh, scoring 22 times.

Last term, he netted 10 times in 50 starts and two sub appearances as Peterborough finished sixth in League One before losing to Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off semi-final.

Taylor, who spent time on loan at Hampton and Richmond while with the Bees, qualifies for the Republic of Ireland via his grandfather and was in Stephen Kenny’s squad earlier this month but is yet to win a full cap having appeared seven times at U21 level.

The signing of Taylor will add to the competition in the centre of midfield with skipper Sam Morsy and Massimo Luongo having been regulars as the Blues powered their way to promotion.

Lee Evans was a key man earlier in the season and youngster Cameron Humphreys made his breakthrough into the first team last term, while Dominic Ball and Panutche Camara’s first campaigns with the club were hampered by injury. Rekeem Harper and Idris El Mizouni look set to move on this summer.

Superblues9 Clarke Harris doesn't fit our style of play. Way too lazy, just stands around waiting for the ball to come to him. The main reason they didn't make it through to he play off final, as they had no outlet to hold the ball up. Whether he could adapt, I doubt

Tractorboytommy. The last Taylor we signed was actually an excellent player until he got the bad injury. Then for some reason went totally off the rails, and all the bad stuff started.

Is he championship quality???

@troyparrotsleftear - no mate, that's why we've been chasing him so long because McKenna doesn't think he can make it in the championship ....

So, can someone explain why Posh didn't accept a bid of just under £2m in January , but have now accepted a lesser bid of £1.5m, with a further £500k should we reach the PL? Eg a total of £2m….Why are Posh saying this is a phenomenal deal for them…unless someone is being economical with the truth re the true transfer fee? Because Doesn't make sense as it's being written tonight.

Btw a massive WELCOME to FPR to Jack 👍🥳

Nigeglos. Total lack of class from McAnthony, could you imagine Ashton using foul language like that in a filmed interview? I could not!

Welcome Jack

With the 3 attempts to sign him for between £1m & £2m in January, it was clear that McKenna & Ashton saw him in the same light as Davis, Broadhead & Clarke; players for the future who would be Championship first teamers.
For me it was inevitable that we'd go back in for him again, as he offers more creativity & a goal threat than what we current have in the middle. The Championship is a different animal to League 1. Maybe Camara could have stepped up, but injury has denied him his chance now, while I can see Cameron Humphreys going on loan to Peterborough, to get a whole season at Lwague 1 under his belt.

ArnieM, didn't he only have a year left on his contract? I'd say that they got decent money for him and a sell-on fee for a player who could just leave at the end of the season on a free. They kept him to have a tilt at the playoffs and managed to get in. I think that was worth the gamble. Sadly for them they couldn't finish the deal against Sheffield Wednesday. They still didn't lose out too much.

Do worry a little that McKenna is building a v big ‘squad', with a view to rotate. I feel we looked so much better (and results improved) last season when we got a settled 11 and stopped the seemingly random rotation of strikers and defenders. Need one striker, and then we've got quality and competition in all positions for next year. COYB.

d77sgw: Not sure why you have gotten a down vote, l agree we did look a lot better side when it was pretty much settled without the chopping and changing. Not sure about Jack, but hope he proves me wrong.

Great that he gets the whole pre-season with us.

I agree on having a settled first team but we need two players for every position and some versatility. We know that KM analyses every game and the games will be tougher. Also injuries can come at any time and be short term or long term. A strong squad will ensure that there is no drop in quality or performance when players are replaced. We will have an incredible bench too. I trust KM 100% in every decision he makes and every player he wants. Onward and upward ITFC.

The reason McKenna rotated was because the team wasn't performing how he wanted and some of the players were not up to standard. Then he strengthened the squad in January and got the players he wanted the team started performing and the team stayed more or less the same every week.. So i don't know how anyone can criticise the job McKenna has done but i suppose you're always get some moaners.

One of my worries going forward was the ages of Luongo (31 in September), and Morsy (32 in September). This goes a decent way to alleviating that. With Humphries as an ever improving back up, and hopefully Camara having an injury free season, we look quite strong in what is a key area.

Also, £1.5m in today's financial climate is a really good deal IMHO.

McKenna is well aware of the huge step up in quality that his team will be facing this season. Yes we had a team who could've held their own in the Championship but he wants the team competing at the top. With this in mind it is clear that he needs a bigger squad and more quality. Taylor has played Championship football and is a good age. I'm sure that players will depart.
We are now a club with ambition and like it or not their will be some surprises around the corner when it comes to transfers in and out. KMK knows the type of player required and in Ashton he has the negotiating power and financial clout from our owners to push our great club forward.

Why is it on all the footie sites I've seen they're saying it's an undisclosed fee?? Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong!! In KMcK we trust.

I like the MacAnthony interview, it's candid. Right deal for everyone.

Great to have a brilliant young prospect wanting to come to Town, he'll learn from some true pros and develop himself and start to build our platform for the next 2-4 years.

In KMK we totally trust!

Peterborough are more astute than some people think, they've just announced Taylor's replacement ,signing another Barnet player on a four year deal.
No doubt he'll be sold on for vast profit in a couple of years.

Linkboy13, KM isn't beyond criticism, and he certainly made mistakes. He definitely had a concept of the right players for the right matches. I felt like it was working quite well at the start of the season to switch Leigh with Davis and Ladapo and John Jules. We can clearly see that we were at our best with a settled side, but as you say when we had the quality players to stake their claim we had a clear starting 10 then a starting 11.
Having a settled side won't have been a new concept that KM learned from experience. It is an obvious concept. There also has to be rotation across the season and it makes sense to play to each player's strengths depending on the opponent. It is also important for players on the fringes to be able to earn a starting place if they outperform their teammates.
I wonder if we will see a bit more of the rotation at the beginning of the season like we did last season or if KM wants the benefit of a settled side.

Gforce, I don't think anyone is doubting that Peterborough are doing some good wheeling and dealing. I think what people take issue with the way they do business.

Well written Linkboy13 for understanding what was behind the much-criticised 'rotation' until we got the right players.

ArnieM he was on a fixed term contract. In January he had 18 months to run on it, after which he could leave as a free agent for nothing. Six months later he is worth less as his contract has less time to run. Peterborough made a logical decision in January that they would hold on in the hope of being promoted and maximise their chances of that by not selling one of their best players to a promotion rival. Peterborough have now failed to be promoted, we have succeeded (and so are a division higher and not rivals), whilst their is less time on his contract so we pay less.
