EFL Matches Postponed as Mark of Respect
Friday, 9th Sep 2022 11:37

Town’s League One game against Cambridge United at Portman Road and all other Premier League and EFL fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died yesterday aged 96.

A statement released by the EFL reads: “Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

“Further information, in respect of how football, clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point. Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.”

Town are set, as it stands, to return to action on Tuesday evening when Bristol Rovers visit Portman Road.

Ipswich Town Women's FA Women’s National League Cup determining round tie at QPR on Sunday is also off.

Meanwhile, BBC Radio Suffolk's Life's a Pitch will not be broadcast on Saturday.

I would at this moment be sitting in the pub with the great atmosphere of match day….very much looked forward to after grafting all week.
All the while remembering the late queen and her very privileged life.

Instead of being bored out my mind now……

My view on it is this, I fully understand that the Queen's passing should be handled with respect, and in reality missing ONE game this weekend isn't really the end of the world is it? Which I was going to by the way. But as others have mentioned, I would have enjoyed belting out the national anthem after a 2 minutes silence in a packed out portman road. However, next weekend me and four other friends/fans are supposed to be going to sheffield Wednesday away, and if that game is called off I will be annoyed, because that is totally unnecessary in my opinion. Its sad that the Queen has passed, and the one game postponement I understand. Anymore though is stupid, the day to mourn is the day of the funeral, and from after today's postponement anymore cancelling of games is daft. I mean how far does it go? Should we be going to work then? Can we smile? It is a massive moment in our history, and a sad time. But people mourn and even celebrate a wonderful life in different ways. I think life goes on, and the day for things being shut down and paying respect as a nation is on the day of the funeral.

Did the queen present the FA Cup to Mick Mills?
I'm fairly sure that she attended the final.

The FA didn't trust us to be respectful.

We know how to behave.

Seems a bit arrogant and jaundiced of them.
Not a surprise.

bobble - ignorant people like you have no idea how much the Royal family are worth to our country. All the tourists that come to our country to see Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Windsor Castle, the changing of the guard, etc, etc... spending all thier money in our country. Why else would they come to our sh it hole of a country with all the stabbings going on - even in Ipswich.

Anyone who agreed with the postponement should watch and listen to Broads comments when asked about the cricket going ahead!

And saxonblue i won't get chance on tuesday as i can't make it and with every likely hood of Sheffield wednesdays game being postponed i won't get chance then either!

As happybeingblue points out, why do you have to be sombre to show respect! Strange thinking in my opinion.

I tell you what i think, i think its disrespectful announcing the new king and his title within hours of her Majesty's passing, surely that could and should' have waited until after the funeral, that to me is like reading a will before the funeral! Again my opinion!

Again i don't see how postponing the football represents respect! And with other sports going ahead
its mind boggling! No consistency>

Bring contentious.... I am not pro cancellation, but understand why.

However looking at it selfishly from an ipswich perspective, Cambridge are currently over achieving soa6be playing them later will benefit us???

To all posters remember it is only your opinion whatever way you think of the decision. Change what you can, endure what you can't and have the wisdom to know the difference!

I have to say to Bert , ( your words made me realise ) and a few others I have been out of line with my words I've been distrspectfull and I will admit Bobble really got to me with his disrespect to the queen and yes I got a rep as a keyboard warrior but I am also a taekwondo 3 rd dan black belt not to hurt though , so his on going threat to fight is just that as was mine , so I apologise to you robson wark and everyone , I lost my wife a short time ago at a ridiculous young age she was both a mad Ipswich fan and a fan of the queen and I know she would have been on the side of cancellation ,and yes bobble I agree we all have opinions but your description of the queen was a disgrace , but in everything else was your opinion , I promise to enjoy the banter and if I disagree it will be respectfull, we all share the love of Ipswich and our club , no more threats or anger and bobble don't threaten me either, whatever you think you don't know me , and hurting people is not my game defending yes and I do that very well , but I will be the man I am and apologise to you to never for your comment on the queen my wife loved her , but for some of the things I said , you will just see me agreeing it disagreeing but respectfull , because I love this site and forever blue
