EFL Matches Postponed as Mark of Respect
Friday, 9th Sep 2022 11:37

Town’s League One game against Cambridge United at Portman Road and all other Premier League and EFL fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died yesterday aged 96.

A statement released by the EFL reads: “Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

“Further information, in respect of how football, clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point. Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.”

Town are set, as it stands, to return to action on Tuesday evening when Bristol Rovers visit Portman Road.

Ipswich Town Women's FA Women’s National League Cup determining round tie at QPR on Sunday is also off.

Meanwhile, BBC Radio Suffolk's Life's a Pitch will not be broadcast on Saturday.

I don't see how cancelling sports events is showing a mark of respect.
The method of mourning is very much down to individuals choice as people handle death in different ways.
It has been said by others already but there would have been plenty of opportunity to show respect at Portman Road tomorrow.

Many of those working at sporting events are zero hours workers who will now not get paid when we are going through a cost of living crisis

This decision makes no sense and surely not what Liz would have wanted

Jesus, it is a show of respect. Poor little babies who are going to miss their footie this weekend can't see past that. Dear oh dear.

Cancelling the weekends football is a mark of respect. The UK can all survive a weekend without football, or any other sport.

if you are going to use the word respect, get an understanding of the word!

Well perhaps you could show a bit of respect, inghamspur - to Christians by not blaspheming at the start of your post.

DaGremloid. If ud read my post properly ud have seen I said that I personally agree about games going ahead. I'd have preferred that. And so the vast number of posts on here id agree with. However, there are some whose comments are unnecessary and hurtful towards the queen. While not particularly a royalist myself, imo they are disrespectful to some1 who was, in effect, forced into being queen, and who devoted the whole of her life to that role. Even still working right up to 2 days before she died. So yes, I understand the reasons for the games being cancelled. But also understand that many, myself included would rather they not have been.

Britain's classless society what a joke. I would have paid my respects like anybody else with a minutes silence before the game. I treat every body the same regardless of class. Too many lick ar÷÷ in this country im afraid.

I thought they said that all the arrangements for the Queen's passing had all been meticulously planned ages ago so when they were doing that, why didn't they ask her if she wanted all sporting events to be postponed or not and then we would respecting her decision not some chump from the EFL.

The Queen has shown the country and the world what loyalty is. Few people on here should think a little more deeply about what they are saying. Service to her people, us, and those all over the world owe her a gratitude and respect of what she means to this nation. It's ONE match no more; surely our need to give up one game as a mark of respect is not that much of a sacrifice even if you're not a monarchist. We have become very cynical and obsessed with our own pleasure. This is a once in a lifetime event respecting not just someone but our queen who has given her lifetime to her nation. Yes, she has had a life of privilege, but I would rather my life of anonymity and not having the scrutiny she has had to endure. So, we miss a game which will be seen at a further date! Not much to endure surely. COYB we are better than that surely. Find something else to do tomorrow and enjoy the fact you don't have to attend some function you'd rather not be at because you've committed yourself to a lifetime of selflessness.

I think that's missing the point. Hardly anyone here is saying that football should continue because they don't want to miss a game. The majority of fans here (and according to the FSA) want the games to continue precisely BECAUSE its the most appropriate way to pay our respects, collectively coming together at this time of mourning.

I'd have been very happy to go and stand in silence, three cheers and a round of applause, whatever, etc.
But no worries, I'll just go with the flow of authority and "respectfully" carry on with some diy and odd jobs that need doing instead.

I think maybe I was a bit hasty with my comment earlier. It is very sad about Her Majesty and she deserves our respect for her many years of unwavering service. I'm just disappointed that there is no game this weekend, although I know its just a game and not really important. I still stand by what i said about cancelling the internationsl break though. They are dreadful.

The official days of mourning are today (the day after the Queen's death) and the day of the funeral. Having no way of coming together collectively on Saturday risks making the day a collapsed ballon. Us Town supporters would give the great lady a fine send off and it won't seem the same later. What is behind this? I expect the football authorities are scared of the bile that may come their way from the Sun and The Daily Mail who, while filling their pages with endless Premier League reporting have never been a fan of footballers or for that matter football supporters.

The Queen cane to the throne when I was four and I am exceptionally sad that she's died and happy that she had such a great and long life and for me the celebration of that life is more important. i find some of the pomposity on here (no names) frankly sickening. How dare you tell people what they should be thinking and feeling.

Texastom added 16:31 - Sep 9
Why sacrifice sport? Sport brings people together to talk and share experiences. Minutes silence helps people reflect and share commonality and togetherness within their chosen community. We all carry on working which is want the Queen would want and which is what she would do.
Sports authorities are just following beauracratic Gov guidelines. Bad call.
Official funeral day - different matter.

They could have still played the games. People should have a freedom of choice they are not forced to attend matches if they want to sit at home and be morbid it's their choice.

I completely agree with the decision not to play football this weekend, I am surprised that other sports are going ahead. I am almost 58 and can remember at the age of 8 giving my allegiance to god and the queen as a Cub Scout. After all these years the queen deserves our respect for just one weekend. An often silent but nevertheless a great woman! Also what would the rest of the world think if we were showing live football on SKY whilst the queen is lying in state? Annunciation to Putin at very least!

However, I do feel having shown our respects by not playing matches this weekend, football and sport should resume from Tuesday with the exception of the funeral itself sometime the week after next. God Save the Queen, Long live the King!

I do not get the whole wear black and be morbid for a week,it is very old fashioned and a religious type notion from yesteryear, lets be honest most of the country are not religious and would rather celebrate and honour her life in a happy joyous way surely, what better way than coming together with our national number 1 sport. think the powers that be got this one wrong. the best funerals i have been too are where the family has not gone with the grim tradition from the old days.96 years is a wonderful long life lets get some perspective here .

I am obviously in the minority here but think it is exactly the right decision-----I beat say no more or make any further comments-------I am truly sad and can miss a football match as a tangible sign of respect.

Football authorities have bottled it. Queens attitude is stiff upper lip, can do attitude, get on with it. Let's celebrate her Monarchy. Can you imagine grounds bellowing out our National Anthem! Brilliant. Ironically other sports are going ahead!

GatesofDelirium added 17:33 - Sep 9
I think some (most?) are missing the point here. There will be plenty of opportunity for 2 minutes silence or to belt out the national anthem with the football community at the Bristol Rovers match on Tuesday. We can celebrate her life then or/and at Hillsborough the following Saturday.
This postponement is a mark of respect for the duty and dedication to service shown by our monarch for over 70 years. All football is postponed including amateur and school games as well as horse racing today and golf and cycling's Tour of Britain.
It is disappointing to see so many negative reactions to the postponement of ONE football match? I wonder if those same folk will complain about the extra Bank Holiday on the day of her funeral?
