EFL Matches Postponed as Mark of Respect
Friday, 9th Sep 2022 11:37

Town’s League One game against Cambridge United at Portman Road and all other Premier League and EFL fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died yesterday aged 96.

A statement released by the EFL reads: “Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

“Further information, in respect of how football, clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point. Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.”

Town are set, as it stands, to return to action on Tuesday evening when Bristol Rovers visit Portman Road.

Ipswich Town Women's FA Women’s National League Cup determining round tie at QPR on Sunday is also off.

Meanwhile, BBC Radio Suffolk's Life's a Pitch will not be broadcast on Saturday.

I was around at the last king's passing;
although my orifices were not fully under control.

I would like to say that in a multicultural society we all will react in different ways so best not to enforce unnecessary postponements. In a free society respect should not be enforced. Even I would have to admit that the Queen earned our respect, but the institution has had its day.

Quite frankly, I express my grief at every match; every goal conceded and every point stolen. Let football continue and have a couple of minutes quiet reflection, sing the national anthem and wear the new black kit, (if we have enough spares.)

One of those which would draw criticism regardless of the decision.

Personally, I think it's the wrong call. Not sure what it achieves and very much doubt the Queen would want sporting events to be cancelled. On the contrary she attended many. Keeping folk at home, rather than out and about remembering but also meeting friends and family seems the wrong thing.

There are other ways to remember. A period of silence. A round of applause. This in my view is overkill, particularly as it's not mandated and other sports are going ahead.

While i have never been a Royalist i think anyone who has worked tirelessly for 70 years in any given sphere deserves respect but her love of horse racing and always prepared to attend sporting events makes this decision one that one would not agree with!!.

I'm really shocked by a lot of these comments. I'm living abroad, I have done for the last 10 years, but fly back regularly for games.
I'm not the biggest royalist, but they the Queen, Charles and William and Kate are a great representation of the UK, and we should be very proud to have them as our heads of state.
I personally am proud of our history and what our monarchy represents. Even if some people aren't fans of the royals, I think they should still muster respect for them at their passing. The match is being postponed, not cancelled...

Rugby League statement on BBC Sports today:

"This has been a difficult decision - we have taken into account the desire expressed by players and clubs at community level to come together to share their grief, and to celebrate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the RFL said in a statement.

This is exactly what most of us have been saying - that we'd like to pay our respects at the game.

And either all sport should be cancelled or all of it goes ahead. It's ridiculous that one sport thinks it's okay and another says it isn't.

When the ban of our rights was implemented it really depressed me but I am over that now because I am now livid beyond words. Charles111 tried his best but his establishment is the law.. We do not get a look in!

Odd that rugby is being played.

It is not odd that rugby is being played. The policing for that is much lower.
If you are worried and worked up about this weekend think about next weekend with a lot of police being drafted into the capital for the funerals. Further postponements inevitable.

I knew something would throw a spanner into the works.

Respect to her Maj & those who want to mourn but there's plenty of time for that, most people just want to get on with their lives as normal.

I'm sure she wouldn't want the fuss.

I would say there is not much policing at Newmarket v Bury Town or schoolboy football or South Norfolk Sunday League, Div 4

@legoman.. I haven't got a commemorative mug or plate and as I've worked in London most of the last 25 years I can't say I get excited when passing royal palaces etc.. However the world is showing respect for our Queen… on a level that wouldn't be offered for any other head of state… is it too much to ask that of the British. if you are upset at a postponed game fine
….but I suspect the Queen has done more to represent this countries interests and promote a positive view on the world stage than anyone in the last couple of centuries.

Huge respect for the Queen and this moment in our history but the EFL's decision is out of step with the messaging from Government and the Royal Family itself. I benefit from the postponement but many people will be disadvantaged when the EFL could have made a proportionate decision which chimed with the wisdom of those who know what should and should not happen in a period of national mourning. I am inclined to the view of others that a stadium of home and away supporters could fulfill the requirement for respect and decency in honouring someone who dedicated her life to the people of this country and beyond. A missed opportunity from the men in suits for bringing people together.

…….. Parliament is sitting on Saturday in order for both houses to show respect but the good people of Ipswich and Cambridge are denied that opportunity early in the official period of mourning not a period either side of the state funeral which will, of course, be a world event and absolutely the right time to stop what we may be doing and show our respect .

@Dog has called it correctly. The immediate postponement of footie at Portman Road is related to the level of police resourcing needed at short notice in London. Look out for vans of coppers heading down the A12. For other sporting events common sense has prevailed where political correctness has not blinded decision makers.

I can't help but feel that the establishment, who rarely put a foot out of place, have slipped up on this call. Most people's affection for the monarchy was tied up with respect for Elizabeth and the work she did in her long lifetime. What follows her death is very much open to debate. But imagine full football grounds today, united as one, with that feeling of togetherness which the occasion engenders. The remaining monarchy will need all the help that they can get and someone's missed a trick here. Maybe the FA is now being run by Republicans!

Although what I actually suspect happened was that the FA and the monarch's people both had meetings at the same time and the FA came to its conclusion without waiting for the word from the throne or knowing that advice was going to come.

Absolutely the wrong decision...completely ott nonsense...she was 96 for gods sake! And led a long privileged life at our expense. just listening to the radio all day yesterday made want to jump off a cliff... her life could of been celebrated today at every match. Get over it. Not everyone is a royalist.

All the extra police needed to be around Buckingham Palace means there isn't enough to police big games in the prem and championship. If they cancel these they have to cancel all. It has nothing to do with respect..

All opinion based. Mine relevant or not is that this was a poor choice and not one that HM would have endorsed. I am however not suprised this was the decision made given the authorities involved….is anyone?

Aside from the *slight inconvenience* of canceling the weekend's fixtures, I don't really understand how that is respectful as opposed to playing and having a more-traditional 2 minutes of silence.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this issue: I can understand the arguments on both sides. However, I've always found the (fairly recent) introduction of a round of applause instead of a period of respectful silence to "celebrate" someone's demise a bit weird. My suspicion is that the authorities don't trust the minority with a couple of brain cells to keep quiet for two minutes.
