Lambert: One or Two Will Probably Go Out Thursday, 10th Jan 2019 19:26
Blues boss Paul Lambert says “one or two" players could be allowed to move on now he has made additions to his squad.
Lambert has brought in four players so far during the January window with free agent James Collins on the verge of becoming the fifth.
He says that those signings will allow him to let players who will now be more on the fringes move on, while left-back Jonas Knudsen is already expected to depart.
“One or two probably will go out but I don’t want people just to go out and not play any football or the club not get some money back for it or part of their salary,” he said. “We get that done to us, so we do the exact same to other teams.”
Lambert says he has no plans to cut short the loans of Trevoh Chalobah or Matthew Pennington, his January business having taken the total of loanees to five, the maximum permitted in a matchday squad.
“It doesn’t make sense sending them back, they’ve been big players for us and we’re up to our full quota,” he said.
But he doesn’t rule out more loanees coming in: “Only if it really helps. This is where it falls down, the structure of the squad. If five loan lads come in, guaranteed, five will go back and then you go back down the same route, same route, same route, same old, same old, same old. You shouldn’t be in that position.
“Number one, you shouldn’t bring in eight or nine players in the summer window, regardless of what level you’re at, whether you’re at Premier League level, Championship level, League One, League Two.
“It doesn’t make sense bringing in eight or nine guys, you have to get them to gel first and foremost. It doesn’t work, that is a really difficult thing for any manager to do that.
“Ideally, you’d maybe have two or three guys come in in the summer, it’s enough. And then you build it.But you can’t have this turnaround, this is not normal.”

A tactfully constructed way of saying that Hurst was mad to change so much at once and showed his inexperience in doing so. i don't care what the situation was regarding McGoldrick, Garner and Waghorn in the summer - even if all 3 wanted to leave, all 3 should not have been allowed to leave. McGoldrick has gone onto better things so far but not the other 2...
Hurst was in a difficult position as the loanees, McGoldrick and a few others left before he joined, and then I presume the club wanted to sell Webster and Waghorn for the money so not sure Hurst could have kept them. The club was in poor form under McCarthy before those key players left, so the gap in the playing squad was huge. I liked the idea of signing some lower league players, but it was a big failing not to sign more Championship experience, height and strength. Lambert is now putting that right, but unfortunately I fear it is too late to keep us up.
"“It doesn't make sense bringing in eight or nine guys, you have to get them to gel first and foremost. It doesn't work" think this might be an old fashioned view, a lot of championship clubs have made 7 or more including the leaders. wigan and forest made 11, for us a more balanced selection may have been preferable though!
MrTown, Nsiala had a good game last Saturday (and dare I say it he would be a fantastic League One centre back, if it came to that). Some on that list can go, but to make such wholesale changes would make PL guilty of the same mistakes that PH made. Not going to happen.
One big problem we have is lack of patience. I see above a list of players, many of them are young players still developing their game. If all things are as they should be they should be the core of the reserves and when they improve enough first team contenders. If they don't have the right mentality let them move on - but don't cut out young players just because they aren't quite ready. We can't be that short term.
Massively refreshing to hear this' One or two probably will go out but I don't want people just to go out and not play any football or the club not get some money back for it or part of their salary,” he said. “We get that done to us, so we do the exact same to other teams.”
How many times in the past have we let people walk for nowt? a la Mcgoldrick, Berra, Leadbitter, McCauley, Delaney, the list goes on...
if pl's set against nolan and donacien (maybe jackson & edwards??), then it makes sense for them to go out on loan for the season (but don't sell them, they will be very useful in league one and/or after lambert goes)
similarly if he doesn't see a place for kenlock/rowe/lankester/cotter etc would be worth loaning them out
Experience has shown that if they don't want to be here there is no point in keeping them. McGoldtick is interesting, for us, always on the treatment table, half way throu the season at United, injury free? Is that iuck or coincidence? I'm not sure we have anyone that other teams would be interested in such is our demise! Make or break end of season for the Town!
Whatever the thoughts are of the past, it all needs to be parked and all the energy put into the present and the future. The squad is what it is and PL will bring in replacements as he feels they are needed. So as supporters we must do the same give him our support and believe he will get us upwards and onwards. The players do not go out to fail the club, with full support they will react to positive vibes and try their best. What In essence that is needed is a positive attitude looking forwards without going back over the past which has gone. Certainly PL is a manager with those credentials and let us all back him. COYB.
I don't suppose Hurst wanted to bring in 7 or 8 new players, but after he had bought the first four or five and found how poor they actually were, panic set in.
