Derby in "Advanced Talks" for Waghorn
Tuesday, 24th Jul 2018 21:55

Derby County are reportedly in “advanced talks” regarding Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, who was an unused sub in this evening’s 1-0 friendly victory away against the MK Dons. TWTD revealed that the Rams were interested in signing the 28-year-old a fortnight ago.

According to the Daily Mail, Derby are willing to pay the Blues a fee totalling £8 million for Waghorn with the player said to be keen on making the move.

Reports elsewhere claim last August's £200,000 signing from Rangers has submitted a transfer request in order to make the move.

Frank Lampard's Rams have been among a number of Championship clubs eyeing last season's 16-goal top scorer throughout the summer.

Middlesbrough are also very keen, while Birmingham City have also been monitoring the situation and Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Sheffield United made an offer of approaching £5 million three weeks ago which was quickly rejected by the Blues but Derby appear to be prepared to meet owner Marcus Evans's asking price.

Meanwhile, the Blues are among a number of clubs linked with Exeter forward Jayden Stockley.

Preston are also said to be interested in the 24-year-old, who came through the AFC Bournemouth system before joining the Grecians last summer following a number of spells out on loan.

Stockley, who has a year left on his contract, scored 25 times in all competitions last season. Sunderland also said to have been keen but with their interest having cooled.

Just wish the club would be up front with the fans, if he's going what's the minimum we-re considering and who are we lining up?

Well i for one don,t trust ME one iota , now ay will PH get all the money if Waghorn does go , once again 1 week before the season and we look like selling our best forward..insane.!.

Since PJ got a few quid ME has done nothing except cover costs (it,s his buisness so hardly going to let it collapse) but apart from that he has taken money out of the sales of players , and i have no doubt he will do it again..all the blke has does is one scripted inteview in the last 7/8 years and he is getting away scot free...WHY ????, One of our best defenders , our best forward , and we are looking at Exeter players .!! I approtion no fault to PH at all in any of this or the players , but totally at the door of ME , We need the whole lot ploughed back in and on players that will improve us as we are wafer thin , and it could be a rough ride this season in my view.

Before waggy is sold

PH Will want a striker in the door ready Tom Bradshaw is the man

12 goals last season in the championship

will cost us about £2ml and will score 10-15 goals next season (Hopefully more)

lets have faith ME Will give PH £6-7ml to spend

We got rid of McCarthy, which seems to be what everyone wanted. We brought in a promising, young, ambitious manager rather than an Allardyce, Pardew, etc - great change of direction. He is starting to develop a philosophy and style of playing that fans have been denied for years. He is bringing in exciting young talent from the lower leagues - something we knew and hoped he would do - rather than journeymen Championship players. But before the season has even started, we've lost faith with him. Jeez!

Waghorn was great for us last season - 28 years old and just about his first great season anywhere - hence £200,000. I just have a feeling that £200,000 to 8 million in 1 year will be looked back as one of the shrewdest moves ever, as he struggles to get in the Derby team while our youngsters help us to fall back in love with Ipswich.

You never know, I could be right! Let's enjoy the ride! Unless you are determined to be miserable

If the player wants to go there is absolutely no point fighting to keep him here. £8m is a very good valuation for a player whose reputation is based on one good season.

As always the money must be reinvested. Back Hurst to bring in some quality lower league prospects.

Was at the game tonight and was pleasantly surprised by the new signings also by woolfden and ward who had a good game dozzell came on and looked like he's going to have a impact this season and there's still players to comeback hopefully ( huws, bishop)the style of football PH has them set up to play will suit our players so losing waghorn won't be such a big loss as long as we can use some of the funds to buy another centre half and another striker then if needed bring in 1 or 2 in January so we can push on

Derby seem to be spending big money very regularly. Wonder if they have been assessed against the FFP rules?
Would be very sorry to see Waggy go but he presumably thinks Derby (and likely more money for him) is a much better bet than us for promotion. Mind you it is a massive profit for us if we get 7 - 8m for him after one year. That said we will need to replace him with a proven performer (like for like) asap. Not sure that there is anyone of his ability available at present from the C/ship so perhaps a decent loan from a Prem club (as much as I don't like to say it) given the time left is needed. While we appear to have got some useful people in from lower divisions I feel that we also need a couple of front players of proven ability as well.
Would also hope that a bit of money from Waggy's move goes in to the back pocket for January in case we need some help then.

Leeds have brought several lower league players over the past couple of
seasons, certainly didn't work out for them.Let's hope Mr Hurst has better knowledge
of the lower leagues than their many managers.
That aside I don't understand why we don't recruit from abroad more often, there's
some real bargains to be had in countries like Holland,Germany,Belgium etc.

He. Wants. To. Go.
The money talks for the player. Simple.
Now we'll see how good PH is in creating a team greater than the sum of its parts.
It'll make Skuse and Chambers sleep easier, that's for sure.
Crunch week.

Brave Dave, they were players we actively bought not pawns cast aside to sweeten a deal. Big difference

£3m plus 2 players from Derby it seems. Unlikely to be Vydra I guess & Nugent has to be too old, especially having rejected us a few time; not to mention his likely wages.
Bennett & Blackman are more likely contenders. Still young, high expectations coming through, strong & direct with something to prove. The kind of player Mr Hurst likes to get a hold of perhaps.

@Gforce...the problem at Leeds is the trainwreck managerial merry-go-round more than recruitment.

itfcgene added 00:51 - Jul 25
If he's rated this highly by us, he will want an improved contract to the tune of what we say he's worth - it's not just about getting 8m, it's about getting our money's worth if we keep him. I personally would not want to spend 8m on Waghorn, so good luck to Derby.

My work colleague has been saying this for a few days and i now have to agree with him that not one player has been interviewed and praised PH new approach and ideas.

Phil - are the players no longer available to speak to media.

I dont get all this negativity by some. Give the man a chance! look at all the anticipation and excitement flying around when Keane became manager, lots of money being spent and most were excited about what was to come! The man put this club back years! Then look how underwhelmed we were when Big Joe took over, he had no money. He relied on home grown talent( Daren Bent) and a certain Striker languishing in Shef Weds reserves( Shefki), we all know how that turned out dont we!

Its going to take a little while, can we be patient and just wait to see what is going to happen, may take a season before we challenge. However one thing is for sure, it will be better than what we have been served up since ME took over!

8 million sounds like very good business tbh..
If story is true does PH really want a couple of derby cast offs???
Would be better surely to take the cash and choose who he wants as a replacement to fit in his team plans.
