Derby in "Advanced Talks" for Waghorn
Tuesday, 24th Jul 2018 21:55

Derby County are reportedly in “advanced talks” regarding Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, who was an unused sub in this evening’s 1-0 friendly victory away against the MK Dons. TWTD revealed that the Rams were interested in signing the 28-year-old a fortnight ago.

According to the Daily Mail, Derby are willing to pay the Blues a fee totalling £8 million for Waghorn with the player said to be keen on making the move.

Reports elsewhere claim last August's £200,000 signing from Rangers has submitted a transfer request in order to make the move.

Frank Lampard's Rams have been among a number of Championship clubs eyeing last season's 16-goal top scorer throughout the summer.

Middlesbrough are also very keen, while Birmingham City have also been monitoring the situation and Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Sheffield United made an offer of approaching £5 million three weeks ago which was quickly rejected by the Blues but Derby appear to be prepared to meet owner Marcus Evans's asking price.

Meanwhile, the Blues are among a number of clubs linked with Exeter forward Jayden Stockley.

Preston are also said to be interested in the 24-year-old, who came through the AFC Bournemouth system before joining the Grecians last summer following a number of spells out on loan.

Stockley, who has a year left on his contract, scored 25 times in all competitions last season. Sunderland also said to have been keen but with their interest having cooled.

Why down me for not getting excited about a possible league two player joining us while we may be selling our best outfield player? Those that down voted.me must have the same ambition as out esteemed leader.

I up voted you and it down voted you. The above post Ian unable to up vote. Strange things going on...

If he goes it needs to be sorted by the Weekend & Hurst needs to be given the money to make 1/3 decent additions & replace Waghorn: 8M is a good deal but we can't have another Murphy situation when he was sold & never replaced: plus I hope Hurst has been given the go ahead to this deal like Webster: it really is going to be a busy few weeks: maybe with the money we can buy back Marriot

To be fair Waghorn was a great character and scored a lot in the first half of last season about three in the latter stages. This is excellent money IF reinvested.

Given Derby's squad , I wonder if Waggy would even get much game time? I don't begrudge him a move nearer to home - we'd all do that .

Hurst is very quickly making this squad HIS squad . New players coming in will be hungry to impress at this level and don't ge indoctrinated with McCarthys ultra defensive ways . It could all be a blessing disguise really . But suspect this coming season will now be very much transitional . We must be patient.

So we've sold two of our best players and got in lower league replacements. Funny way to strengthen the team. You ME apologists drive me crackers...

@toxtethblue
Its come up as an up.vote from you. Was talking about all the deluded ones that down voted. They seem to think it's ok to get rid of our best outfield player and replace him with a league 2 player.

If he'd handed in a request that says it all really (IF).

Keeping a player against his will can backfire. Want him to stay but talking to some people at the dons game who met the team off then bus, waggle asked if he was staying, reponded with an "I don't know" ........ ominous if his heart isn't in it get as much doh as possible.

Ellis looked good tonight as did Edwards.

Lets replace him with a player that plays in division 2, that will help our chances of getting in to the Prem !!!! How can we sell one of the best players in the division last year.....this is not starting well

Getting rid of one of our best players just before the season to one of our biggest rivals in the same league is not a “blessing in disguise”!

Not as though ME will give £8M for Hurst to spend.

Madness in my view we need more players not selling the best ones we have.

So let's sell him for £8ml

Buy Tom Bradshaw £2ml

Then shrews CB £1.5ml

So will be a Kerion Dyre moment

I have been watching Town for nigh on 50 years and if there is one thing I have learnt is that no player is irreplaceable.

£8m for a player who has had one good season is good money. Also, it appears he has put in a transfer request so clearly wants the move. What's the club supposed to do, keep a player that wants out?

If Waghorn has handed in a transfer request, time to bite the bullet and take the money. No point keeping him if he has the desire to leave. Naturally disappointing, but no point keeping an unhappy player at the club - give PH a large wedge of the fee to reinvest. I hope this shows that there is no loyalty in football, regardless of how much we as fans like to think there is!

Great business. 200k to 8 mill in a year. If we can do that each year and reinvest at least a chunk of it our club can only improve. I'd prefer to keep him but that's not where the club is at.

If he's keen on the move, why are so many of you keen for him to stay? It's fair to say he has had a somewhat up and down career and has rattled around several clubs, but if he is keen to go there is no point trying to stop him. Plus it's good business.
In Hurst we trust.

Football has gone completely mad and the championship is as divided as the premier league.
With our best defender sold and our best striker going to rivals a couple of weeks before the season starts it leaves us woefully short. I feel sorry for Paul Hurst as the spine of the team is being ripped out.
Was at MK tonight and we looked ok but lacked quality in the final third. Freddie looks short on confidence and Dozz will take a while to get going. We lacked creativity and a goap threat.
Think it's going to be another frustrating season

So if he goes, seriously, where are the goals coming from?

Blue56 added 22:40 - Jul 24
Much as I don't want to see him go, buying him for £200,000 and within a year turning it in to £8m is too good to turn down, as long as most of it is reinvested. We were offered allegedly £7m for McGoldrick, turned it down and he really didn't do too much after then, now he has gone for free. Same with Murphy, he had one great season, sold him for a decent amount and he hasn't done much since then. We shouldn't judge players coming from a lower league without giving them a chance to see what they can do, I believe Paul Hurst has a different game plan to what we have endured for the last 10 years or so.

8 million is great business will be on big money for us I suspect. So we sell we reinvest in upgrading the squad it has to be like when. Dyer went(as said above) needs to buodl us a squad of hungry players again.

soclopath added 22:42 - Jul 24
We loved all our hero's past and present many said goodbye and had to be sold when the club where in dire financial straights, currently players guided by their agents have only one goal and its wages,90% of today's players are mercinaries, all this b.s. About settled families and their love of the area doesn't wash.

Fat_Boy_Tim added 22:42 - Jul 24
You do all understand that it's not actually £8m for Waghorn? That's the total figure including possible payments for appearances, goals, promotions etc and probably less 20% of the profit (so basically 20%!) to Gers. It's most likely 4-5 mill up front payment. That's what we will have to spend and that's if ME releases it.
