Bolton Linked With Garner Move
Saturday, 30th Jun 2018 16:54

Bolton Wanderers are reported to be eyeing a £500,000 move for Blues striker Joe Garner.

According to The Sun, the Trotters are set to make a bid for the 30-year-old, who joined Town from Rangers last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £750,000, signing a three-year deal with the club having the usual option for a further season.

The Blues are said to be willing to accept offers for the former Preston man with new manager Paul Hurst keen to put his mark on the squad ahead of the new season. Garner, who was born in Blackburn, is also reported to be interested in a move closer to home, which we understand is the case.

The former England U16, U17 and U19 international, who has also played for Carlisle, Watford and Nottingham Forest, made 29 starts and three sub appearances last season, scoring 10 goals before a small fracture to his skull prematurely ended his campaign in March.

The frontman was back training with the rest of the squad at the start of pre-season on Monday.

Spends too much time fighting and on is backside.
Typical MM player. Bluster, effort, low wages hence nominal output.

Not one whom I would want to have at the tip of my spear.
I'll take Waghorn 8 days a week and twice on a Monday.

I just don't want the squad filled with league one and league two players. If someone mentions Vardy I can list dozens who've come from nonleagie and lower leagues and proven to not be good enough. Hang on to Garner until we have someone at least as good. The one thing we know is he's championship standard and waggy and his goals were important in the first half of the season in keeping us in touch of the play-offs. I don't mind us finding the odd lower league mid career gem but I don't was full scale mining of them. I'm not slagging Hurst off btw, he's new and young and I like much of what he's said, I'm simply expressing a wish for us not to bring half a dozen players in that we have no idea if they can play at this level or not. More experienced managers than hurst have made such mistakes

This is my first ever contribution. Paper speculation and rumour are just that. We need to wait and see. If it ends up being true then it's the replacement that's important. If players really want to move then it's better they do. Get a good price and reinvest. That's critical

Jordan Rhodes anyone?

I,m not reading too much in this, after all its the SUN, nuff said, but i do believe we need some height in the striker department, none of our strikers are very tall, and if we are going to be playing with wingers, crossing into the box, then short is not helpful!

If Hurst doesn't rate Webster, Garner, Waghorn etc it's up to him. He's the manager and the man in charge. End of discussion.

And so what if we have lost 17 players? We have plenty of youngsters who need games and experience. Anyways it's actually 15 players down as we have made 2 signings already.

And many of our injured players like Huws, Adeyemi, Bishop are now fully fit and raring for the new season. In Hurst we trust!

dirtydingusmagee - life after safe hands McCarthy is always gonna be a gamble. If we can keep hold of Bart, Wags and the promising youths, I'm not really that bothered about any of the others. Funny that the ones I want out don't appear to be going anywhere, maybe no one want them!
Been impressed by Hurst to date, so we'll have to keep the faith and trust him. Let's be honest here, relegation aside, it can't get much worse than the last 3 seasons.

My question is why would PH want MM's team. He'll be moulding those he has with new signings to achieve his game plan. Clearly some won't adapt or want to so more changes I guess.
As for leagues 1 & 2 players, he knows what's there. Another Maddison would be great! Glad he's not wasting time in Ireland so looking forward to next signings and not paper rumours.
While i've enjoyed watching Garner at times, he's too often on his backside plus his headers go anywhere. If someone wants to buy then great.

Cheshire as positive as ever I see, mm has gone and we will move on to better things! Your negativity does no good!

He may he may not. We don't know who Hurst has in his mind for a replacement. We should wait and see what happens. Some on here are a heart attack waiting to happen. Chill Chill Chill.

I think PH will be more like a Ramsey than a Robson. He clearly has a “model” of how he wants his team to play the game. In which case he will build his own team accordingly making sure he recruits the right types of players, I don't think we will see the square pegs round hole scenarios we did with Mick by playing players out of position just to get them in his team or be top heavy with defensive players. I think Joey has been a really good signing who attacks the ball in the air well when running into the box, however, he isn't an out and out target man as he struggles when playing with his back towards goal, I can therefore see him becoming surplus if PH signs a target man.

I believe in PH that we will find a very intelligent manager who under the surface has a sophisticated steeliness. Last summer he made significant numbers of changes at Shrewsbury and managed to mold an effective team in a very short space of time, so it's nothing short of a miracle what he did there.

Is there any more risk when bringing in a handful or more of lower division players than throwing in several home grown youngsters (which many on here have advocated in the past )? I would say he will manage the balance between experienced pros who have played at this level and below as well as introducing some of our younger players, but don't be surprised to see several players moved on - we all wanted change and before ludicrous comments resurface let's give the guy sometime to do what he appears and is reported to be good at.

Despite many comments to the contrary I do think ME takes a great deal of interest and thought when putting deals together for players. He has always said that some money will be available for the right players if they become available and with the Webster money and a bit more likely to be available I trust PH to spend this money wisely and get good value for it. Of course we don't want to sell then run out of time to replace before the transfer window closes.

I do also think he is smart enough not to expect to build a team around our more fragile talented players who will need to do a lot of proving that they are robust enough to stay out of the treatment room. I like Huws, Adeyemi and Teddy Bishop but for what the club is paying these guys they owe Ipswich Town a lot of desire, hunger and commitment if they can get out of the treatment room. As much As I don't want to see this type of talent leave the club our squad last year become rather large in taking in makeshift players and loans - if they don't measure up soon then I think PH will have the ruthless streak to sideline them or move them on.

I would also say don't expect some of the young talent on the fringe to be immediately in the plans. I think we have a handful of youngsters who will be very much part of the first team squad but others will have to go out on loan to get some battle hardness under their belts.

PH wasn't my choice for manager and I raised concerns about the number of goals his team scored, however, I believe he has excellent credentials and deserved to be on the short list of interviewees. I really enjoy watching the U23s and the type of football they played, I do have concerns that some of our philosophy will be changed BUT I TRULY recognise the quality and characteristics that PH brings and have every intention of giving him my full support to try and bring his brand of football to this club without whinging at every moment about this or that decision.

Well whatever we think at this moment in time will not concern the new management team,he's got his targets sounded out,I would imagine it's all about paperwork for 80% of who ever comes in,and if we end up in the mire it,lol still be better than M.Ms rubbish I can go and watch a game again feel like a 16 year old full of anticipation wAiting for the next move ole ole ole move on with the times and up up up

I'd rather have us play any of the kids over Garner. He is a cheat. Simple as that. Sell him and pay for a quality loan player while our youngsters develop alongside. Having said that, if he could eliminate the diving from his game then he is a pretty accomplished striker and he is excellent in the air.

PH may well have a plan of how he wants his team to play... I'm Sort of guessing every manager does and goes out to get players to execute this way of playing. I would simply prefer us to be recruiting more than the likes of Lower league gypsies. There are also some massive claims being made about PH which I hope turn out to be true but they smack of blind optimism. I'm hoping he's the right man but given his first sale is the only first team player who's probably prem quality and the only classy ball playing centre back we have and the players we are linked with look bang average lower league players I'm just expressing a concearn.

It is funny that there used to be loads of people on here crying out for Town to buy gems from the lower leagues, now that it finally might happen we see people calling us cheapskates! Come on!

I wouldn't be too gutted if he left, but he did get a load of goals so I'm not clear why we shouldn't be expecting at least the same or maybe more like £1m for him.
I don't get why we need to lose money.

Would we also have to pay out his contract?

I doubt there's much truth in these rumours as we are talking about the Sun. Garner is such a useful player at Championship level. Brilliant in both boxes. I would definitely keep him but if Hurst has a plan in mind and Garner doesn't suit it then you can understand. I would look for 1-2 million though. 10 goals last season and he was out for the last 2 months.

Surely we are missing the point here. As TrueBlue1878 suggests, he is unsettled in Suffolk. He's from the North West and he wants to return. We all know if a player's heart is not in the club, we move him on. All this talk of prices and assets disregards the fact that players are human beings just like us. Let him go and bring someone in who wants to be here.

Ph is just clearing out last season's mid table sh😁t. Mm left us in a mess. Trust the new manger. Remember you can't polish a turd 💩💩 and we have a few turds. Garner can go. He's well over rated. If he wasn't falling over he was getting booked or he was out Injured. No room for passengers and ph knows who they are. As for waggy that's a different story. We need to build a team around him so f##K OFF borough.

This doesn't make any sense. He's a much needed grafter... and goal scorer... remember when we had a forward who did both of those things? (MURPHY). With pacey wingers being brought in, it could be his season if he gets the supply.
