Middlesbrough Targeting Waghorn
Friday, 29th Jun 2018 13:38

TWTD understands Middlesbrough are keen to take Blues striker Martyn Waghorn back to the North-East this summer and are among a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for the 28-year-old.

Waghorn joined Town from Rangers for a bargain £200,000 last August and enjoyed a hugely successful first season at Portman Road.

The South Shields-born frontman was the Blues' top scorer with 16 goals and also picked up 11 assists. No one else in the Championship was directly involved in more goals.

The former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan man’s form with Town didn’t go unnoticed elsewhere in the Championship and we understand Tony Pulis wants to add the ex-England U21 international to his Boro squad ahead of 2018/19.

Birmingham City are also among those to have been keeping tabs on Waghorn, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further year, along with Nottingham Forest, who were linked last week.

Whether the Blues would be willing to part with one of their most highly prized assets, who quickly became a fans’ favourite after moving to Suffolk, remains to be seen.

However, new boss Paul Hurst evidently wants to put his stamp on the squad and Town have already shown that they are willing to allow senior players to move on if an acceptable offer is received, Adam Webster having joined Bristol City for an initial £3.5 million rising to £8 million yesterday.

Webster’s departure and the exit of youngster Ben Knight to Manchester City for just over £1 million, which is set to be confirmed in the next few days with the fee agreed and permission from the Premier League for the move to go through granted, means the Blues are under no pressure to sell and they would almost certainly want a very significant sum for one of last season’s top Championship performers.

Players come, players go, that's football. I liked watching Waghorn, but come on .. cancelling my ST, really?

I would be massively disappointed if this happens, but based on past experience, I'm not at all convinced it won't. While I'm happy enough with the bargain basement experiments to date, I can't see anyone from that department satisfactorily replacing Waghorn, an experienced Championship striker. Again, though, we have to trust PH on this (and hope he also agrees in this case).

Everyone saying we wont find another bargain basement to replace Waggy!!

How much did we pay for him less than 12 months ago.

If we get anything over 10 million then we could build an entire team with that. I want him to stay but for that money would not be overly disappointed and trust PH to replace anyone who leaves.

Selling Waghorn would be a significant disaster, IMO.

The only time it should even be entertained is if the man himself demands to leave, in which case we have to exact an extremely high fee.

We aren't privy to what's happening. The EADT has been a very reliable source in the past and it wouldn't publish unless there is serious interest. It could be that Waghorn is unsettled and has requested a move? It could be that Hurst wants a different type of front man? Loads of ifs and buts here.

If he does go, I would think it would be for a big figure (10M plus). That could be Hursts plan. He might want to bring in 4/5 other players from league 2 for that price.

Players come and go at any club....people wanted change...but now criticise the changes that are being made. If Waghorn goes we all need to appreciate that it is part of Hurst's plan. We have streamlined the club enormously and made huge savings in wages...meaning ME will need to put much less in in order to sustain the club. Long-term that is a good thing...the club should be self sustaining.

I do however agree that anyone talking about a play-off place is living in lala land...that isn't going to be the aim next season.

"well if we sell waghorn then it is obvious their is no intention of this club wanting progress. One of the better strikers in this league to be replaced by a freebe low div man???"
Yeah so?! At the end of the day Evans is great isn't he? Isn't that all we need to know?

Can I also state the obvious that we should be SIGNING new players not selling. At the moment the scores are:
17 players out
2 players in

There used to be a Facebook page called Marcus Evans Out Of ITFC which was hounded and vilified because they dared to criticise the way the club was run and were considered not to be true supporters. With the sale of Webster and now this news about Waghorn it is clear that the Evans group will sell at every opportunity and the rubbish about reinvestment is a myth. We need a group like Marcus Evans Out and a concerted effort to rid our once great club of these money men
EVANS OUT NOW

So the Exodus continues. Whose next? Bart? Knudsen? Garner? Ward? Spence? Who knows. No problem though. We will bring in released players from League 2 to replace them.Feels like Blackpool all over again. They did the same and it did not end well.

I don't wish to scare people but if my contact inside the Boro is right then the deal is all but done. Middlesborough has offered 4.2 million but Evans is holding out for 4.8 million and even if the fee is agreed, no contact as yet has been made with Martin Waghorn who has recently moved his family to Suffolk and likes the place. it is very much in the balance

Hate to say it but this story is all over the press now. The main question appears to be the fee.

Is it just me that feels like we always undervalue our players?

TonyHumesIpswich added 07:05 - Jun 30
he's been undervalued, 5 million is a bit of a joke fee.

A potential £7 million profit on Webster, £4 million profit on Waghorn, £1 million for a school boy!

Let's get Mick back and see what he could achieve with £12 million.

What says you Swn? 😂

Northstandveteran added 07:16 - Jun 30
£12,000,000.50p if Skuse gets sold!

Roola added 07:20 - Jun 30
It shouldn't be about profit or what you paid for them, it about what they are worth and how much people are willing to pay for that. Has Evans got a reputation as a 'selling man' why not offer low eh?

toxtethblue added 07:58 - Jun 30
4-5million for Waghorn would be a joke, absolute give away. I'll never walk away (its in my blood) but that would lead me to majorly take a step back, except for any effort to get ME out, I would put all my ITFC energy into that. I just wish I lived closer...
