Updated: Webster Set for Bristol City as Clubs Agree Fee
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 15:38

Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

Very sad news, easily our best defender. 3.5 initial isn't a lot, especially as Portsmouth are due 700K of that. So before add ons we get 2.8M.

I wonder where we are going as a club. 16 players out and 1 in now.

Bring back Matt Clarke

I reckon 2M might tempt Portsmouth to sell us Matt Clarke. They say they won't accept any bid below 3M but we should put a bid in anyway.

Best of luck at Bristol Webo, good business for the club and another great find by MM. With Josh and Kenlock developing and Knudsen starting to develop in to CB plus wolfman coming along it makes sence to cash in on an injury prone CB and make room for our own who will play regularly. Plus PH will need to offload to make space for his signings.
Wonder if Bristol City will try for Skuse, interesting summer ahead and another sign of getting business done early

The exodus of players continues. Don't worry though, they will be replaced by frees released by league 1 and 2 clubs.

Christ on a bike, the moaners are getting worse. I take it some on here are typing naked; surely they aren't capable of dressing themselves aswell.

Take it they will - at least, ask their carers to turn off the parental control so they can say well done Paul and thank you Marcus, if PH builds a decent squad now.

Still makes me feel glad to be so happy and alive seeing how depressing and sad life must be for some. Perhaps sports relief could cough up for a little cottage in Inverness to give their carers some respite.

Not surprising really wait till the majority of season ticket holders and the euphoria of a new manager encouraging those that were torn about season tickets are all bought then boom start selling your assets! Season on season. After Portsmouth's share not a lot to use really. If he's allowed to invest the lotvthen ok otherwise absolute travesty!

For a bunch of fans who haven't been and watched an ITFC game in ages, you all seem surprisingly clued up on how much of a top player Webster has been.

Even if the fee is only £3.5m as quoted, thats still 5 times more than the club paid for him, and he's not exactly set the world on fire during his time here.

A good piece of business for the club no matter where the funds are re-invested.

Oh dear, the negatives are at it again, for goodness sake give the new team a chance. I am disappointed , but I believe it is a good deal. To say MM made a good deal on Webster c'mon , he has spent more time off the field than on and Matty Clarke has gone to be valued higher, proving MM should never have sold him in the first place. In Paul Hurst I trust.

Hurst is going to want to build his own squad and there's going to be casualties which aren't always going to be popular, so if everybody's going to throw their toys out of the pram whenever someone moves on we're in for a long summer. Personally not fussed about Webster as he's from the same glass factory as McGoldrick.

Sorry, but if Webster was the wonderful "ball playing" centre back his apparent reputation, why has he not made more difference to the way Ipswich play? I won't accept daft suggestions that McCarthy was ordering him not to use his full ability.

He isn't the miracle worker some seem to think, but is instead fairly inexperienced at this level, not free from errors and, of course, plagued by injuries. Seems like we've got a decent fee based on his perceived potential, rather than actual achievements while with the club.

Toxtethblue what do you mean how much will Portsmouth get.

20% of the profit, yeah.

Here try this. https://www.dummies.com/education/math/basic-math/how-to-calculate-percentages/

Completely naked while i type this while my carer takes me for a number 2 and wipe my derriere.

There are only 5 weeks to the end of transfer window and you do not begin your activity by selling your assets and bring in a loan.

I would love to be proved wrong and would quite happily apologise to all and sundry but the club need to sign 8 to 10 players. Getting a low transfer fee after deductions and which i suspect will be paid over 3 or 4 seasons is not going to get Mr Hurst much at all.

As i have said numerous times before all i want is decent football and the manager to be supported.

I suspect webster didnt fancy it on monday and told hurst that he wanted to go back to his family, hence why we accepted low bid with add-ons.

If they don't have a replacement locked in already, then it doesn't matter what the fee is because the potential targets will now cost more as they see whats in our pot.

I am more concerned that we already have the replacement in Chalobah.

@austractor
agree. "Defender in, Defender Out" mentality.
@dog
agree. 9-10 signings might do it. Depends on the signings though (released frees from L1 & L2 clubs isn't going to cut the mustard.

The manager has changed but not the greed of Evans.

I simply don't understand why so many people are complaining. Strangely, the same people that are complaining are often the same ones that wanted MM out. With MM and TC leaving, significant change was bound to happen. Our club is moving in one direction out of this league, and it's going to get their very fast.

Jesus, that honeymoon didn't last long. Fans are already turning on Hurst and the team hasn't kicked a ball in front of him yet.

At this rate it's going to be a long season.

our defence was piss poor, new left back new right back new central defenders, now we have a young left back a young right back and a central defender. seems we will need a new goal keeper to?

Hurst will have had the final say on Webster. He's had a chance to chat with him, seen him in training and has made his decision based on that. We haven't got the fuller picture (Hurst has) so it's difficult to judge the decision that he's made. I'm sure Hurst will not enjoy having such a small squad right now....however it's a massive opportunity to bring in a number of players. As a new manager coming in....it's great to be in the position of being able to sign at least 8-10 players. That will really allow Hurst to put his stamp on the club....

Is he injury prone though, or did nick make him injury prone as he seems to have done for pretty much our whole mid field bar skuse in the last few years!?
