Former Canary Lafferty Linked Saturday, 17th Jun 2017 23:40
Town are reported to be keen to sign Northern Ireland international striker Kyle Lafferty, who is a free agent following his release by Norwich City.
According to various national newspapers here and in Ireland, Blues boss Mick McCarthy wants to bring the 29-year-old to Portman Road to partner Joe Garner, whose £1 million move from Rangers was confirmed on Friday.
Lafferty left Carrow Road at the end of the season after three years in which he made only 14 starts and 25 sub appearances, scoring four goals. While with the Canaries he spent time on loan with Turkish side Caykur Rizespor and Birmingham City.
The Enniskillen-born frontman began his career with Burnley - during which time he was loaned to Darlington - before moving on to Rangers for £3 million in June 2008. While at Ibrox he netted 38 goals in 86 starts and 51 games from the bench.
Capped 62 times for Northern Ireland, scoring 20 goals, 6ft 4in tall Lafferty moved on to Swiss side Sion on a free transfer in June 2012, then Palermo a year later before joining Norwich the following summer.
Edinburgh sides Hearts and Hibs are also reported to be interested in signing Lafferty this summer, along with Azerbaijan champions Qarabag.
Town, who would almost certainly be in a position to make a bigger contract offer than those three clubs, have been mentioned in connection with Lafferty on a number of occasions over the years going back to Jim Magilton’s time in charge at Portman Road.
During his time with Burnley he scored a memorable goal at Portman Road in a 1-1 draw in December 2006.
While Lafferty’s Norwich City past would be controversial among fans, manager McCarthy is a long-time admirer having tried to sign him when Wolves boss but lost out to Rangers.

I don't have a problem with signing a player from Norwich but I do have. Problem with signing a potential disruptive influence which he clearly has the potential to be. Look at how many clubs he's had. There's a reason why he's never nailed down a place.
Steer clear, or we might have another Chopra on our hands, and not be able to get rid of him
I'll say again he is utter dross, especially at a Club level. The stats speak. volumes. Couldn't give a shyte either he does at International level....he has better players around him to help him.
If he has a history of.poor attitude WTF would we want a rotten apple ( an ex Budgie one at that!) at Ipswich Town.
The time to protest about this having a Laff type of player being potentially signed was when Marcus offered Mick a new contract. Mick will do his best to find the right players who will fit within his philosopy and budget. As it is too late now to expect any changes at the top we have to hope Mick gets a settled team during pre-season and we go on to have a successful season, which will be staying in the division. The way to topple Mick is through lower and lower attendances and toxic atmosphere - but I can never wish for my team to do badly and get relegated. That would hurt too much.
he hasn't got on well with other managers, dosnt bode well, first mistake or word out of line with McCarthy will see him, side lined and boot cleaning, alongside others that don't kiss a#rse, so he is likely to be another town ''player '' that nobody would recognise if in same queue at the supermarket .But he will pick up a wage ,as he has been for nothing elsewhere in the past. .Anyway the deal hasn't been done yet, may not happen .
Better than Kiefer Moore so I'd sign him up on that basis alone. Could also teach Moore about how to play that position. For those that are anti this signing, who'd you rather have up front Lafferty, Moore or Samuel?
I think this guy may be a bad egg. MM puts a lot of thought behind a players character and behaviour. Im sure MM would only go for him if he believed he would fit in appropriately.
Definitely a McCarthy-style player. Until we get in a leader who brings a whole new approach to style and selection (e.g. passing game /playing the yoofs etc.), KL might just about do a job. Feels mid-table-ish. Not the complete waste of space of some of our previous signings, but not going to set us alight either.
Havent seen much of him apart from Euro's when he rightly lost his place after their first match when he was very poor. I obviously did well in the qualifying rounds I would support him to the full if he comes, but if there a re questions about his character, there is very unlikely to be any truth in this link.
There's a poll in the EDP today saying that around 2/3 of Norwich supporters have said we are welcome to him! I have to say that contradicts the conversations I've had with several Norwich fans over the last year or so (especially when he was scoring plenty of goals during the NI qualifying campaign), so either I've been talking to the other 1/3 fans that rate him or this is partly sour grapes! I'm really not that bothered if we get him or not, (I'm leaning slightly more towards he's worth a punt side of things) but if we can grab him on a good deal then he might have a point to prove. I am however a bit concerned about this stories of him being a bad egg though, that's something I wasn't aware of until I did a bit of digging following what I read from others on here. So only yes please if the wages are realistic as it is a bit of a risk.
On reflection I think i we shud sign him as the scum would be shatting themselves in the derbies that he would come back to haunt them. Despite this one family poll they've recently done it's been clear that many scummers do actually rate him and felt he didn't get a fair crack of the whip at scumville.
Might find that he has little loyalty to them also. Given so few chances and sent out on-loan a lot makes a player pretty angry. Sure he'd love to score against them and prove them wrong.

Well, Murphy and McGoldrick have better players around them at international level and they haven't scored many, so you can't knock his record. He didn't do well at Euros because he wasn't fit, which would be my main worry. Otherwise, I think when fit and given a run in a team, he's a goalscorer.
Has to be worth a punt. We had Murphy who was good at Championship level, but did nothing at international level. So if this lad can do it on the international stage, I have every faith he can do a job in the Championship.
Jim Baxter could be right;but whilst McCarthy is in charge, his pre season only ever consists of playing first an Irish team away, followed by games against teams well below Ipswich' standard.
These are now all away, and never now plays against either Premiership opposition,or foreign teams.
He's an ijit, but often puts it on. Our Gareth keeping a straight face! barely 40 hours on the club pitch in 2-3 seasons. I like a poacher and he's all that.
