Former Canary Lafferty Linked
Saturday, 17th Jun 2017 23:40

Town are reported to be keen to sign Northern Ireland international striker Kyle Lafferty, who is a free agent following his release by Norwich City.

According to various national newspapers here and in Ireland, Blues boss Mick McCarthy wants to bring the 29-year-old to Portman Road to partner Joe Garner, whose £1 million move from Rangers was confirmed on Friday.

Lafferty left Carrow Road at the end of the season after three years in which he made only 14 starts and 25 sub appearances, scoring four goals. While with the Canaries he spent time on loan with Turkish side Caykur Rizespor and Birmingham City.

The Enniskillen-born frontman began his career with Burnley - during which time he was loaned to Darlington - before moving on to Rangers for £3 million in June 2008. While at Ibrox he netted 38 goals in 86 starts and 51 games from the bench.

Capped 62 times for Northern Ireland, scoring 20 goals, 6ft 4in tall Lafferty moved on to Swiss side Sion on a free transfer in June 2012, then Palermo a year later before joining Norwich the following summer.

Edinburgh sides Hearts and Hibs are also reported to be interested in signing Lafferty this summer, along with Azerbaijan champions Qarabag.

Town, who would almost certainly be in a position to make a bigger contract offer than those three clubs, have been mentioned in connection with Lafferty on a number of occasions over the years going back to Jim Magilton’s time in charge at Portman Road.

During his time with Burnley he scored a memorable goal at Portman Road in a 1-1 draw in December 2006.

While Lafferty’s Norwich City past would be controversial among fans, manager McCarthy is a long-time admirer having tried to sign him when Wolves boss but lost out to Rangers.

With McGoldrick and Sears (who no doubt will be played out of place again next season) goals seem to be dwindling (unless next season is their season), Pitman going, Moore still being an unknown and Morris never getting a chance I would rather prefer a proven goal scorer. I can look past the fact that he is an ex-canary but at club level he scores about 1 in every 5 games (1 in 8 while in playing in England) and 1 in every 3 at International level. He wife though ;)

Brut of a striker, in the same mould as Murph, would be a cheap replacement.

Hello he's 6 foot 4...wonder what would make Mick interested in him?

Only scored 5 goals in the last 3 years or so and not played that many games and turning into a loan man, no thanks.

The guy doesn't play because he causes trouble. At Palmero he used to go AWOL to go and see his Mistress in Milan (regardless of if there was game on or not) . For those saying he was decent at Burnley, he scored 10 in 83. Rangers 30 odd in 104 and given the stuck Garner got for a similar ratio I can't see why all think Lafferty is decent.

As far as I can tell he is a crapper version of Joe Garner so having already signed a "handfull" up front I don't see why need another 10 goal a season (at best, some years ago) striker when we need a clear goal scorer. The fact that Rangers once shelled out 3 million quid for him says more about their diabolical transfer policy over the years than anything else.

To recap

Disruptive
Goes missing (in actual life and not just games)
Never been prolific
Law unto himself
Budgie dregg
Has "he'll not play for me again" written all over it

Midas- I don't know who you have been talking to but i.yjink your leg is being pulled. I grew up in Mordor (aged 8 to 24) and all my mates still there tell me is about as good as out current resident Giraffe but probably better with women.

I admit I'd like his pulling power. Lock up your daughters, wives and anyone else if he comes to town (despite him being married)

I says again. Eff off.

Blue & True - what are you on about? You're talking like we have all the riches in the world to go & get whoever we like. Get real!!

Hell no!

Too much trouble off the pitch.

Ingham - where do I say we need to spend a single penny. Did you read my post?

Do I mention fees at all?

My point is simple. He is a crap, disruptive ex budgie. Just because the kitty is limited doesn't mean we have to sign dross that is more interested in chasing women than playing football.

We have a cash plus player deal in for Ward, and even if that doesn't come off we can do better than KL

Let's be honest he is a very good striker but hasn't been given the chances elsewhere.I personally think he is worth the risk and could work very well up front with Garner.👍

We need some creativity in the centre of midfield. Huws looks to be going elsewhere. Do we need more strikers and wingers?

Don't care about the Norwich link, but he's a terrible player with a terrible attitude. Ideal replacement for Leon Best.

So next season we would have these strikers on the books: Lafferty, McGoldrick, Sears, Moore, Benyu, Morris, McLoughlin, perhaps Pitman... Going to be a bit crowded in the opposition penalty area?

Well he wouldn't be the first budgie to pull on a blue shirt, and as much as I dislike the Norfolk twits I think he he's probably better than what we have at the moment, as for us being able to offer him a better financial package than those other teams interested in him highly surprises me.

"Free" for a reason

cant say I'm enthused by the thought of him joining town, hasn't S played lot in relation to time spent at clubs, there must be a reason for that, and as a result not exactly a goal machine either.

Look at this infographic (scroll to the bottom of the page: https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/infographic-top-scorers-euro-2016-qualifyin his name is alongside the likes of Muller, Lewandowski, Ibrahimovic, Bale and Rooney. That surely deserves some serious respect. The reason he's got sod all goals at Norwich is because he was left to rot on the bench by a manager he didn't get on with. Who's to say if he didn't get some regular starts he might be able to do the business. I wouldn't pay over the odds for him but if we can get him on a good deal it's worth a punt in my eyes.

Didn't get on with the manager at Scum, Didn't get on with the entire club at Palmero (described as unmanigble, manager begged chairman to sell him) left Burnley under a cloud, left rangers under a cloud..... anyone else see a pattern. This is all a matter of record.

Perhaps hadn't got chanced because he hasn't deserved them.

It's alright though because he's scored international goals against Finland, Lichtenstein, Georgia, Azabijan, Hungry and The Faero Islands.

I hear what you're saying BlueandTruesince82, I'm not saying he is a guaranteed to work wonders. But all those things going against him at the moment (i.e. bad relations with previous managers, lack of goals at club level) put him in a fairly weak bargaining position and that might mean we can get him on a good deal. I wouldn't want us to go over the top on wages for him. But if we could get him on a fair deal he might be worth a try. He gets on fine with the Northern Ireland manager, mainly because he believes in him, plays him, and he delivers the goods for him. Northern Ireland were 2nd in their group last time I looked. I can't believe nobody has gone in for their manager. I'd swap him for McCarthy in a heartbeat! They are punching way above their weight given what few top league players they have at their disposal.

And you can't hold it against him for not getting on with Alex Neil, look at the man, I don't think I've ever seen him smile! :-)
He always looked damn right miserable! I reckon he'd be a hard man to get on with.

Your having a fecking lafferty on this one!!. Ticks all the boxes as far as the proper bloke stereo-type of player the Dino loves though, maybe leaving the emerald BORDER issues to one side!!
On the subject of the Dino, it's looking like his keeping his head down and will slip back into PR on the QT hoping that all will be forgotten and it's business as usual, picking up a few early wins to get the fans back on side. NO WAY JOSE, it's to late from my point of view, so the message stays the same - GET THAT FURKIN DINO OUT!!!

While on the subject of strikers...
Check out a Terry Connor special training-ground exercise, no wonder we're not getting many goals!!!

Midastouch at least we now all know what Giles Coke looks like. To me it is simple practice what is needed on a football pitch, keepy uppy is very rarely seen on a pitch for a reason, no point to it

Hmm!Think this fits the McCarthy ethos.

Big guy,
Irish,
Journeyman,
Not young.

I will just accept whatever the club decide, because even though I am a supporter of 55 yrs, shareholder and season ticket holder;I cannot influence decisions made at Portman Rd.

Two or three things in the close season have made me a bit more optimistic;but the fact that McCarthy appears to be staying has diluted this optimism somewhat.

As regards the signings, potential and done;it would appear promising so far.I thought last season that when Mick tried to play more open attacking football,we were caught out at the back;so I wonder if he is still capable of playing the type of football that would see ITFC in the top half and challenging for honours once more.

I have my doubts;but we shall see how the forthcoming season pans out.Naturally most start the season optimistic, lets hope we are still in that mood after playing Luton in the League Cup?

Firstly this is a rumour, however, if it were to happen il let it play out. Previous records at clubs aren't the be all and end all, some players just need to find their clubs. Murphy never really set the world alight before he came here and now we all let on about how we have to replace him! On his off the field problems, those who criticise are likely to have been big fans of Magilton and Marcus Stewart, need I really go on? Regards Mock, he has proven himself a good manager, I'm not displeased to have him, I want him to have the tools to do his job but at the same time, not have the financial security of the club compromised. It's no sure thing throwing millions at it, ask Derby, Villa and Blackburn fans! Among others.

29 years old and only 65 goals in 305 club appearances and 31 of those goals were for Rangers which is probaly equivalent to our League one/Two. Hardly prolific !!! The main for reason for our lack of goals is our lack of creativity. Freddie Sears is a good finisher but no one creates for him.
