Skipper Chambers Signs New Deal
Friday, 5th May 2017 10:31

Town have announced that skipper Luke Chambers has signed a new two-year deal.

The Blues had already confirmed their intention to exercise the one-year option in the 31-year-old’s previous contract.

"I never envisaged leaving and I'm pleased to get things sorted now. I'm looking forward to the future now," the central defender or right-back told Ipswich Player HD.

Chambers putting pen to paper on a new deal ends months of speculation regarding his future, his former club Nottingham Forest - who the Blues meet in Sunday's final day game at the City Ground - having made a move for him on the final day of the January transfer window.

Sorry but I don't see why this is such great news?
Like many of our players his performances have been below average on several occasions this season and his distribution with the ball is often poor to say the least. However, I have no doubt he will still be one of the first names on Mick's team sheet again next season regardless of how he performs.

that is good news.

I'm not sure he's a top class CB but he's probably the best we can get.

Great news with Chambo being signed up.

I reckon Webster could easily take on the Skuse role but be even better.... carry the ball forward out of defence with some marauding runs.

how many times did teams exploit Chambers as a weak link in our defence, turning circle of an articulated lorry. with webster back and spence let go, it will be back to hambers atr right back..... nothing changes...same old story,, same old mates playing,, same outcome... bottom six

I have to agree with 'cat's' comments.

I can see next season mirroring exactly as to how this season has been. When Webster is fit, and given his quality, where will he play?? Obviously should be CB.

But with McCarthy all of a clamour to keep Chambers and Berra, it will be no doubt square pegs in round holes once again. Nothing, as to how this has been, will change.

In addition, given the relationship between Chambers and MM and the fact that Chambers has signed a two year deal, is that indication that even at the end of the next season MM will too be staying on.

About time, don't know why we held out for so long to offer him new terms.
Very pleased though we'll done Chambo

Done well for the club, but one of those where the time is up.
Not strong enough for me now and is often caught wanting when teams score.
Could still do a job as a squad player, but knowing McCarthy he will be the first name on the team sheet.
Sadly expecting another season as last with no investment and little to be positive about.
Oh how I hope I'm wrong, but can't see ME or MM changing their ways!

This is really bad news so much for a complete shake up, he just not a very good defender it is as simple as that right back or centre half he is just not good enough for this level.

I'm hoping that this is either an indication that we're playing 3 central defenders or my preference for 4132 with Webster in the Dier role and pushing Skuse to compete with rest of midfield for his place. If McG can play just behind front two then we might start going places!

How does our captain signing a new deal mean that there'll be no changes this summer? Were people expecting every player in the squad to be released and 18 new players signed?

Great news at last! Great Captain, leader & role model for the youngsters in the Academy, as well.

Happy with this, only as a CENTRE BACK though!

Excuse my ignorance, but is this the same Chambers that everyone wanted to get dropped earlier in the season? The same Chambers that was only ever in the side because he was one of MM's 'blokes'?

Or are we talking about another one?

Im glad he has signed.

He is not the best cb and should never be at rb but he is one if not the only leader in our team.

He is passionate and gives his all even when his manager plays him out of position.

Great news, would like to see Berra stay also for his experience and aerial strength, but certainly not on the left of 3. For me Smith has a lot to do to return as first choice CB, whether in a 2 or 3. He certainly does not lack for commitment or bravery, but lacks a bit of mobility out wide in a 3. A lack of pace can be compensated by good reading of the game, but he has not shown enough evidence of that for me.

Knudsen has done very well on the left of three CB's, which would leave an opportunity for Kenlock or Nydam at LWB.

I expect we will look for Watkins from Barnsley to replace Lawrence in the inside left position, which would be another very good free signing.

Like many am pleased with this.As one of Micks top blokes and captain,he is certainly an influence on and off the pitch, although as some say he is prone to the odd mistakes;but he makes up for it in attitude.

Agree with Pilgrimblue etc that Webster could do well in an Eric Dier holding role;pushing Cole Skues in the defensive midfield role, now that that other top bloke Dougy is on his way.

Also Didsy in the Eric Gates role behind the front two,who unfortunately wont be Mariner and Brazil;as David McGoldrick seems to like coming back into the midfield.

Don't see this as a great deal, his distribution is dreadful, he's one of MM's chosen few but he certainly loves the club. I do hope this won't be to the detriment of Webster who has the potential to become an excellent player, so I guess with a 442 it will Smith who gets dropped as has been the case when MM has had his proper bloke Berra in. Remember Smith has played against some of the world's top players whist on international duty. I expect him to move on

Can't wait to see him back at right back, after all the MASSIVE CHANGES this summer.

Sarcasm aside this is good news. But he needs to to be stripped of the captaincy, and get used to a place on the bench.
