Town Targeting Former Newcastle Defender Taylor
Friday, 20th Jan 2017 10:39

TWTD understands that Town are targeting the signing of former Newcastle United central defender Steven Taylor, who is a free agent having left MLS side the Portland Timbers in December.

Taylor was born in London and raised in Newcastle and came through the ranks at St James’ Park. He went on to make 246 starts and 22 sub appearances for the Magpies, between 2002 and 2016, scoring 15 goals.

The 30-year-old joined Portland Timbers last summer and made nine MLS appearances, scoring once, and also featured for Portland Timbers 2 during his stint in the US.

Capped by England at U16, U17, U20, U21 and B levels, Taylor spent time on loan with Wycombe Wanderers early in his Newcastle career.

Town have so-far made two signings during the January transfer window, striker Kieffer Moore from Forest Green Rovers and free agent right-back Jordan Spence.

For me a good defender at this level could be our new Mowbray with Webster out and Smith not back Chambers and Bera not good enough at this level anymore the rest are cover only this is a no brainer especially for free !!

I quite like him. Dependable and good in the air. Think about the stinkers from Berra this year when you can usually rely on him in the air and i think we have good cover. I would like to see him with Webster. I think Berra is going backwards so anything than can stem the rot will help

Timmyh. A typical negative comment from you. He's far from past his best. Is a good player and with Webster out for the season would be a very good signing.

I remember him giving blood sweat and tears when he played for England under 21's. Was solid as a rock, what he is like now I am not sure, but I guess he will have retained some of it!

Good player, certainly at this level. My abiding memory of him is when he went down as if he was shot to cover up a hand ball. Check it out on youtube, it's comedy gold!

Totally uninspiring signing, but I'll remain calm as presumably he's experienced cover for Webster. Hope Digby gets picked ahead of him, though.

this would be a good signing if we can keep him fit, a positive at last!!!

Ask any Geordie he is rubbish

I would be happy to get him on board, plenty of premier league experience that could rub off on some of the other players. Could be a usual addition in the Championship. Never forget his handball against Villa, goes down like he had just been picked off by a sniper!

Makes sense with Webster being out for the rest of of the season. Experienced and can hopefully bring a bit of leadership into the team to help stabilise things a bit more.

He was rubbish to fans for a team that felt they should be in the top half of the Prem, but he still played over 200 games in the Premier League and Europe for them and was called up to England by 2 different managers.

His wage whilst at Newcastle would have been far out of our reach and now it maybe possible but people here want more, I think even if we got John Terry a section of fans would just write him off as past it....!

From what I remember he attacks the ball well from set pieces and scored a few for Newcastle.

Defo worth a gamble short term.

Would be an astute signing at this level. Hope this one happens.

Should the deal goes through (which I highly doubt, not the least due to the current tragic-comical situation here!) I sincerely hope Mr. Watson will have himself a somewhat hmmmm less "humiliating" debut for us than what he did for Portland 2nd unit vs LA Galaxy 2nd unit!
During a short trip to California in early August last year I happened to be on a cocktail bar of sorts that by pure chance (given all the other sport going on over there) had this particular USL game running on it's telly, and in short Stuart managed not only to score an somewhat avoidable own goal after less than 10 minutes but was basically an very integral part of a scaringly shaky and open defense I recall that let in 3 goals in the 1st half ... before he was "mercifully" replaced around the hour mark!
And then the real indirect "humiliation" .... WITHOUT him these Timbers somehow managed to scored 4 goals in the remaining half hour or so and winded up holding on for a thoroughly entertaining 4-3 comeback win! .... although it has to be said that I'm pretty sure Galaxy's 2nd unit had an unproper bloke sent off also around the hour mark to kind of facilitate this unlikely comeback!

To be honest I don't really know much about his current form or form-curve or how he performed in those 9 MSL games he played in this season, but I tell you this: If this barring Mr. Lawrence's 30 yards screamers pretty anemic-susceptible ITFC attack subsequently is able to score 4 goals (or even just 2!!!) EVERY time Stuart Watson is substituted for an offensive player here ... Well I'm certainly all in for this deal materializing, and no matter the cost! :-) LOL

On his Portland debut he scored an own goal , his side were 3-0 down when he was taken off after 66 minutes and won 4-3 without him !!!
Ok as cover but hasn't played more than a handful of games in 10 years , surely there must be a young centre back around to put pressure on our players ?

30, free and injury prone....well well, what a surprise

blues1 ... what makes him far from past his best ? , struggled to get in a team in the US , released by Newcastle as he couldn't make the team of a relegated side reknowned for letting in goals and hasn't managed more than a few games in a row before picking up an injury in last 10 years
Not being negative just asking what you see in him ?

like Spence, decent solid player for nothing, experienced and with Webster out it makes sense.

Would you guys rather we spent what little money we have on a defender and still be short of a forward thinking midfielder and striker or get this guy in for nothing and then spend the money where its desperately needed ??

Seriously don't know exactly why I referred to him in my 1st post here as Stuart Watson or Mr. Watson and not Steven Taylor... twice!!! .... (maybe because I had just been reading EADT and had it open on another tab? ) in any event: SORRY! My bad.

Potentially an excellent signing.

I'd be a little concerned about his injury record, but other than that i see him as a stopper, similar to Berra.

Get him through the door quick, before another championship club beats us to it.

Will be an asset at this level but needs to fit in with wage structure & club ethos. If he does that & gets/stays fit it's a no brainer

Why the hell can't we just judge a player for what he does for us, instead of writing him off before he has even signed, Im sure Murphy was slagged off on here when he first signed on loan, and then when he signed on a perm, at look at how important he became for us.

sometimes players are good for one club and not another, no point in moaning for moanings sake.
