Town Targeting Former Newcastle Defender Taylor
Friday, 20th Jan 2017 10:39

TWTD understands that Town are targeting the signing of former Newcastle United central defender Steven Taylor, who is a free agent having left MLS side the Portland Timbers in December.

Taylor was born in London and raised in Newcastle and came through the ranks at St James’ Park. He went on to make 246 starts and 22 sub appearances for the Magpies, between 2002 and 2016, scoring 15 goals.

The 30-year-old joined Portland Timbers last summer and made nine MLS appearances, scoring once, and also featured for Portland Timbers 2 during his stint in the US.

Capped by England at U16, U17, U20, U21 and B levels, Taylor spent time on loan with Wycombe Wanderers early in his Newcastle career.

Town have so-far made two signings during the January transfer window, striker Kieffer Moore from Forest Green Rovers and free agent right-back Jordan Spence.

There is a difference between foresight and moaning for moaning sake .
A number of MM s signings have been questioned pre start and been proved right Nouble, Vesali, Henshall , Stewart, Best , Douglas , Parr , Varney , Bajiner,Digby,Grant,Malarcyzk,Toure,Yowerth,Oar,Alabi,Coke,Knudsen, we pay their signing on fee and wages even when injured and they add nothing to the club or are not given chance too or too many chances when they are poor Douglas . Nouble .
The amount Didz is injured he is almost pushing towards a poor signing for value for money .
I don't see why we have to wait 6 months or longer before we are allowed an opinion on a player signing , a number said Best was a poor signing in summer and were told to shut up , give him a chance he will prove you wrong at a different club , the man looked out of his depth against non league centre backs .
Personally don't think Taylor will add much more than cover at best if proved wrong great

I Don't get the negativity we've just lost our centre back for the season a were bringing in an experienced premier league player who has 3 or 4 seasons ahead of him, who also is a natural leader. With Berra talking about going back to Scotland, he would be the ideal replacement.

Got some really experienced centre backs in the squad yet the best defender this season has been a youngster who had never played at this level before ?

I would have thought very unlikely to get this player he's a good leader and one hell of a defender but I think we can dream on the club is not in a position to get him

Been reading news from other Championship clubs signing new players and some were actually a real bargain and here i am thinking do we really have poor scouts working for our club? I mean seriously, what do they actually do all day?

Why don't we instead sell (or release!) half our team and use the money to buy half the Lincoln team, simples!

I think our scouts are buying the Big Issue and supporting the homeless players union. We are getting the dredgeings of football tip heads. We are in sh't street as a football club and this guy will take the place of a young lad in the team or on the bench.Mick will always go for experience over youth to get him out of trouble.

We need experienced cover at the back with Webster out for the season and Smith still sidelined. Berra has been poor for some time as well so I would welcome this move if the wages are reasonable.

Taylor has always been a decent player and is a little younger than Chambers and Berra so if he can stay fit I think he's a useful signing.

Sign Steven Taylor straight away, proven player and then add Liam Boyce from Ross County 13 goals from 23 games this season for a mid table Scottish Premier side. Phil Bardsley and Aaron Lennon two other Premier players who are struggling to get games at Stoke City and Everton could be very good additions to give ITFC more strength in depth. With the transfer deadline fast approaching something needs to be done judging by what was on show at Lincoln.

I'm beginning to think we should stick with what we already have if all we can attract is 30year old players.
Ok, he was a good player but is injury prone and playing in the states so I doubt he will be match fit.If he is only for cover we might as well try and sign a younger lad so as we can build on that.
I have nothing against Taylor but if this team needs to progress which it does we need to build a team round younger players, and as we have nothing left to play for this season what is the point in trying to sign 30 year old players.!!

I agree support players when they sign. I will if he does. In the meantime we are dealing with speculation & I wouldn't take him.

If he is up to it why is he playing for Portland Timbers at the age of 30? His hometown club released him and last time I looked they are in our division(note I didn't say league!). He would not be the first player to come good again & similarly he wouldn't be the first to be over the hill.

The big point here is the manager making signings. He will struggle I fear having hinted he might not be here long. If the owner was running ITFC as a country club we wouldn't be waiting for a resignation. Convenient for ME in terms of not spending money this window? We will see but my worry is there is more chance of me getting knighted than any decent, Young & hungry signings arriving.

Arise Sir Brownie? I doubt it..

COYB!

A free transfer. Music to Marcus Evans ears. Decent player to be fair, but is he fit?

dukey44 added 16:56 - Jan 20
Well if we want to sign him why tell everybody else and just do what everyone else does sign him then tell us?
1

dukey44 added 16:58 - Jan 20
You don't read about other teams looking at somebody they sign then tell us!!

Not good enough for Newcastle doesn't mean you're not good enough for ITFC.Newcastle are Premiership standard.Ipswich aren't.The only question is,would he be better than what we've presently got? Probably.Sign him on a short contract, pay as you play with the offer of a season long deal if ITFC make top 10.
