Town have confirmed that striker David McGoldrick suffered an ankle ligament injury during Tuesday’s 1-0 EFL Cup defeat to Stevenage and is facing six-to-eight weeks out, if he doesn’t require surgery, which would lead to an absence of 12 weeks.

“It’s devastating news for Didz and it’s a real freak injury as well,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“He went on at half-time and with almost his first touch, he jumped for the ball and landed awkwardly. He thought he has rocked his ankle and ran it off.

“It turns out he has damaged the ligament in his ankle and we are looking at six-to-eight weeks on the sidelines. “

Town are hopeful the Republic of Ireland international won’t need to go under the knife.

“He will see the surgeon on Monday and hopefully he won’t need an operation,” McCarthy continued. “If he does, it could be 12 weeks out.”

A 12-week absence would see McGoldrick sidelined until early November, which may well see McCarthy looking to add to his striking options, even having added Luke Varney as cover this morning.

Several Championship clubs were keeping a close eye on McGoldrick, including Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle, but the injury ends any likelihood of sides making a move for him before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The injury also rules McGoldrick out of the Republic of Ireland's home friendly against Oman on Wednesday 31st August and their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier in Serbia on Monday 5th September.

He also seems very unlikely to make the early October qualifiers at home to Georgia and in Moldova.

Shame, as a good player if fit. Couldn't we find anyone else but Varney to fill in. Surely one of the youngsters is good enough to step up ?

No movement, lazy and for some reason has this reputation of being our star striker? Never fit, bring in a top quality striker on loan and have a real focal point up front- something mcgoldrick is not, and show him what a real striker is!

Time to write mcgoldrick off for the season now, can see it now..........another setback blah blah blah

Worst case scenario is 6-8 weeks without surgery, then it goes again and a further 12 weeks after surgery. Let's hope this injury heals fast - and that it is the last we hear of !!

I'd have expected us to have signed a striker in the summer. Varney is a great guy but not the answer.

His body clearly isn't up to the rigours of regular football - however much of shame that might be. Get in a season long loan for now to replace him, then next summer a quality striker must be the priority.

RaymondovicBlue added 16:46 - Aug 12 He's on a contract so worth keep trying to get him fit - but have to agree with others that we need to NOT rely on him being back to head our attack at any time soon. Give him a good number of reserve games or FA cup games to PROVE his fitness, but not get hopes up before he is ready to shine .... So yes we need another striker if both he and Pitman are out. Luke Varney is NOT the future, we all know that - but when he has played for Town in that right side attack he has been as good as anyone else on the pitch (ish, give or take). As an immediate signing I'm not too upset, and who else would be willing to cover only for such a short time and then be thrown out again?? I think we need to give it a couple more league matches before we write off the squad - several more to be fair, but the window shutting isn't fair, is it ... but that's a different story altogether!
