McGoldrick Set for Six-to-Eight Weeks Out, Longer If He Needs Surgery
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 14:54

Town have confirmed that striker David McGoldrick suffered an ankle ligament injury during Tuesday’s 1-0 EFL Cup defeat to Stevenage and is facing six-to-eight weeks out, if he doesn’t require surgery, which would lead to an absence of 12 weeks.

“It’s devastating news for Didz and it’s a real freak injury as well,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“He went on at half-time and with almost his first touch, he jumped for the ball and landed awkwardly. He thought he has rocked his ankle and ran it off.

“It turns out he has damaged the ligament in his ankle and we are looking at six-to-eight weeks on the sidelines. “

Town are hopeful the Republic of Ireland international won’t need to go under the knife.

“He will see the surgeon on Monday and hopefully he won’t need an operation,” McCarthy continued. “If he does, it could be 12 weeks out.”

A 12-week absence would see McGoldrick sidelined until early November, which may well see McCarthy looking to add to his striking options, even having added Luke Varney as cover this morning.

Several Championship clubs were keeping a close eye on McGoldrick, including Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle, but the injury ends any likelihood of sides making a move for him before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The injury also rules McGoldrick out of the Republic of Ireland's home friendly against Oman on Wednesday 31st August and their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier in Serbia on Monday 5th September.

He also seems very unlikely to make the early October qualifiers at home to Georgia and in Moldova.

We need to move on and Oman without Didz. He is injury prone and will constantly be out. This should have been expected.

I'm glad I don't pay his wages. Best player we've got, but hardly ever plays.
No wonder he wasn't picked for the Euros - can't be relied on.

Im afraid Goldie is never going to be the player he was when he arrived, that first season showed what he is capable of ,but he has been sidelined through injuries ever since, but for the odd comeback game which is sad,but it is also a burden to the club.I think his days as a Championship player are all but over. Its not his fault its just a fact of life ,sh#t happens. We need another striker ,he cannot be relied on ,

Decision to keep him has massively back fired. The boy is made of Glass, such a costly decision in the end, with the 7 mil and probably on atleast 10-15k a week.....Typical

Not a surprise given his record. Clearly a good player when fit but......!!!!

Need to move on and bring in a quality replacement.

Feel sorry for McGoldrick and I'm a fan of his, but I think we should have moved him on in the past when there was rumoured interest. Sadly he's one of those players who will always be blighted by injury. As (I assume) one of our top earners he's really not been great value for this club.

There was one player all summer long I thought town should have moved for on a free transfer and that was Nick Powell anyone else agree?

Mcgoldrick has been very unlucky with injuries the past year but don't understand why some of you saying get rid.... When fit his arguably our best player also a fans favourite because most of us know what he can do on the pitch

Very sad news, indeed. Such a joy to watch when he's healthy and on the ball. Joniesta would be great, of course, but he's not a striker. Good news is, we have several talented forwards. We'll certainly need to see who can best handle free kicks, though.

Really feel sorry for him - I'm pretty sure he didn't want to spend the majority of the last two years out injured. If anything positive can be taken from our current crop of injuries it is that there is still time to bring in new faces. I only hope that MM can convince ME that our squad does not currently have the strength in depth to compete in this league and that additions are necessary.

With McG and Murphs fitness suspect we will need at least 2 more strikers before the end of this season?

I think even the Republic might give up on him soon, shame as I think he is a top player at this level and could even step up to the Premier league but he won't ever be fit for long enough, just waiting for Bishop to get injured now, I'm sure it won't be long. I see we are being linked with Johnny Williams again and his injury record is just as bad if not worse! Shame as all three are very good players and would give us a decent chance if all fit and in the team week in week out.

Sorry,as great as he was (when fit) we need to start planning for life without him now..a club with our budget can't keep carrying this crock.

Offload him asap, even on a free just to free up his wages - we can then bring in someone more reliable.

And btw hopefully this'll mean Sears will start upfront alongside Murphy/Pitman....not Varney and Murphy please!

iNJURY BINGO: Now need Bishop to end up on the sidelines and we have the full house...Hyam being the other one. As mentioned 1 1/2 games is quite good for McG! We could all see this coming shame our scrooge like owner/manager couldn't - 'Freak injury' my arse!

This was always going to happen given his record, and may well be why he wasn't picked for the Rep of Ireland side. So no real shock and Mick always had Varney as a contingency plan.

I suspect it will be longer than 12 weeks.
Did an ankle ligament injury myself back in March and am still not 100% again.

Granted the facilities and personnel he has to deal with it will be better.

I had a complete rupture and the surgeon advised against surgery, so hopefully it will be the same for Didz.
