Smith and Berra Face Battle for Starting Spot
Tuesday, 2nd Aug 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy has hinted that senior central defenders Christophe Berra and Tommy Smith will be battling it out for the left-sided central defensive berth with the right-footed Adam Webster having been added to the squad from Portsmouth over the summer.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke earlier in the summer, played his first 90 minutes of pre-season during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Belgian second division side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Asked whether his record Town signing will be fit enough to start against Barnsley in this weekend’s Championship opener, McCarthy said: “We’ll see how he recovers. He has been out for 13 weeks but he’s played well and he is a good player.”

Notably, the Webster was partnered by Berra, 31, in the first half on Saturday and 26-year-old Smith, like the Scotland international left-footed, in the second.

McCarthy admits he has a big decision ahead of him: “You mean having two left-sided centre-backs and I’m only going to play one?

“If that’s the case and Adam gets in the team, which I’m sure he will at some stage, it’ll be the best one who plays.

“One’s not going to be happy about it but they know the score, they’re not daft. They can see there’s one here and they’ve all got to be better, the intensity on them has heightened, hasn’t it?”

The Town boss says Webster has all the attributes to go a long way in the game: “I see Manchester City signing John Stones for £50 million. I’m not suggesting he’s anything like that at the moment, but he will be a really good centre-half because he’s a big fella, he’s got pace, he can handle it, he’s got two good feet. I think he’s got real potential to be a top, top player.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy is pleased that Smith put pen to paper on a new three-year deal, with an option for a further season, last week: “He’s been a stalwart of the team and I’m delighted he’s signed.”

Then people on here say " why isn't Kenlock playing why isn't Emmanuel " well they conceded 5 vs a non league side last night. Says it all.

No it doesn't as there is eleven in a team rather than just two.

Good to see that Adam Webster has a nickname - 'the Webster'. But is that a MM nickname or a TWTD nickname?

So your going to blame other peoples mistakes on the young full backs ? Didn't see their names mentioned in the details of Sudburys goals!
When given a chance in the 1st team, (which wasn't ofton) both looked more than capable than the two sitting tenants.

Webster and Berra for the time being with Webster and Smith long term. Central defence isn't where the problem lies IMO. Chambers looking lost at right back for the past 2 or 3 years is what's costing us. Until we address it I think teams will target us. Don't get me wrong, I love Chambo and he's a great leader, but he's not good enough at right back.

Thought we had 3 decent central defenders in Chambers,Berra & Smith - it's a right back that should've been the priority as far as rhe defence is concerned...when's Mick gonna learn?

CB's are not the problem, full backs are.... Chambo and Jonas are not good enough to get us promoted. MM needs to pull another class full back out of the hat before Saturday, otherwise we could easily be looking at another dire season of Championship football. Smith and Webster IMO btw.

Yesss! Sounds like square pegs in square holes in our central defence. Will be really happy if Webster starts on Saturday.

Apologies for the length of this post but I do get very frustrated at times reading many posts on this site, especially when we all want the very best for our team and hope that we have a decent season and get entertained.
.
People saying that MM will stick to what his favourite two are on Saturday and not play Webster, surely after 13 weeks out, stepping up two divisions and new to the club that is sensible if MM sees him as not fully match fit, better to bring him in against Stevenage. It is positive that we have finally addressed the CB left/right foot issue.

Chambers at RB - not my ideal (good centre half) but a great character and leader, better than loans long term and probably a good example for Emmanuel in terms of attitude etc. Spend money last season or the season prior for a player that is a journeyman or no better and block the youth development. Same with Knusden - not overly impressed with him last season but improvements were made, supported this year and more experienced he could kick on, if not Kenlock is being developed.

Many of the players we had in, Stearman for one appears to be on his way from Fulham already - perhaps we don't now all that is happening.

The youth are coming through, the team appears to be developing in to more footballers and MM works with what he has, we have stability, pride in the shirt, home grown talent coming through and better footballers.

As supporters we need to support, especially with the teams average age, we need to understand players develop at different times, do not always gel immediately have good and bad games, as I know I do have good and bad days at work.

I do not blame anyone for being frustrated, I do not blame any supporter for voicing an opinion if it does differ from mine. Especially as my 12 year old asks me why I had to support Ipswich as they get abuse at school (we live in London).

However we all want what is best and we have to trust what we don't know, no team or business was built in a season. What I am certain of is we are in much better shape than we have been for years and I thank MM for that, if he brings in flair and better football - happy days. If he doesn't I will be a season ticket holder for many years to come - its in the blood.

Well them two were part of the back 5 and whatever way you looked at it we shipped five last night. Vs a non league side. I'm not massively pro Knudsen but think he'll improve and Chambers at RB at times - deary me!

I bet anyone any money that Webster will not start for us.

Webster won every header on Saturday by at least a foot, and is also dynamic, and good with his feet. He could be a real star for us. Smith and Berra were just as reliable in the air, but both are slow and one-dimensional with the ball at their feet. I would like Mick to start with Webster and Smith, and try and persuade Berra to stay and fight for his place back. Smith's new contract suggests he has pole position.

......... maybe a thousand Season Ticket non renewals is getting a message across - at long last ?

Now lets see that RB position sorted (not before time) - and maybe even the LB position ? - not forgetting natural wing men ... !!

Keep accepting what's served up, season after season, and still coughing up, making excuse after excuse - achieves nothing more - than more of the same.

Dare I have optimism of moving forward in the right direction - or am I just dreaming ?

Time, as always will tell.

Good news for two days running! Personally I'd go with Smith as he was consistent last year. I'd also start with Kenlock who played well last season. Sadly, Chambers will start at right back - no changing that I suspect!

Smith v Berra. Most championship supporters would be salivating at having two experienced internationals battling it out for a key spot. But what do they each offer. Both are good headers of the ball in either box. Berra in my opinion has a more commanding presence but on the odd occasion has allowed a dropping ball to bounce which has cost us. Smith reads the game well but is sometimes bullied off the ball too easily. Smith was at his best at left-sided CB playing alongside The emerging talents of Cresswell and then Mings. This was mostly down to his communication and mentoring skills and spacial awareness. Moving him to right sided CB not only highlighted his left-footed bias and Chambers being caught out of position too often, he also became the junior partner and probably less likely to 'boss' his side of the back line. I think Berra is the better stopper but alongside a good Pacey left back, Smith can give you one of those special partnership that are vital at any level. There are big decisions to be made by MM, Berra and Smith. Smith seems to have nailed hus colours to the cause by giving up his international career and signing a new deal. I'm not sure the exit door has quite closed on Berra. I hope they both stick it out for the good of the club. BTW I think it will be Smith and Berra in Saturday but Webster will get his chance next Tuesday.

"the Webster" ? Could catch on. Key thing is whether he replaces the Smith or the Berra.

Quoted from the article: "Notably, the Webster was partnered by Berra, 31, in the first half on Saturday and 26-year-old Smith, like the Scotland international left-footed, in the second.
McCarthy admits he has a big decision ahead of him: “You mean having two left-sided centre-backs and I'm only going to play one?
“If that's the case and Adam gets in the team, which I'm sure he will at some stage, it'll be the best one who plays.
“One's not going to be happy about it but they know the score, they're not daft. They can see there's one here and they've all got to be better, the intensity on them has heightened, hasn't it?”

Am I missing something here? There seems to be a lot of "ah the penny has finally dropped" and "at last he's listening" comments which are back-handed compliments really.

Not once in anything MM has said above does he say that he thinks Smith and Berra (just because they are both predominantly left footed) cannot play together. (Once again) the interviewer asks a very specific question which alludes to something, and MM answers to that question.

Lads, don't for one single second think that MM or any of his management team read any of your pointers towards the top of European football on TWTD. So I wouldn't be taking credit for changing the man's mind if I was you. He makes all the calls. He gets most of them right IMO, but the anything that doesn't go right gets 10 pages on here, whereas anything good gets mere token credit and an undignified "but lets wait and see shall we" ...........................................................................

Webster if fit can cement the right hand side of the back four as his own I'm encouraged from what I've seen of him so far, as for his partner? Berra had a very poor season last year(complacency? compared to the previous one, while Smith tried his best on his wrong side and put in a better shift than Berra on that basis then Smith should partner Webster if that is what happens then it should be the kick up the rear end that Berra has needed and shake him back into the player we know he is!! then we have genuine competition at the back the skipper can be used if Webster is crocked otherwise as much as I admire his leadership he is not a right back(slow and limited in that shirt) and should not be playing there.

Len Brennan; an excellent post and I agree with it entirely. Chambers is a good footballer, but he's a right sided centre-back not a right-back.
