Poyet and Taricco Eyed as McCarthy Successors Claim
Wednesday, 27th Apr 2016 13:11

Former Sunderland and Brighton boss Gus Poyet and his regular assistant, Blues legend Mauricio Taricco, are reportedly the men Town will look to recruit if current manager Mick McCarthy moves on in the summer.

According to The Sun, “there is a growing belief” that McCarthy will leave Portman Road during the close season and the club hope that Taricco’s connections with Town could help secure Poyet as his successor, while Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are also said to be interested in the Uruguayan.

Poyet and Taricco are currently free agents having left AEK in Greece having taken over in October.

The 48-year-old former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder made his intention not to sign a new contract clear ahead of the Greek Cup semi-final at the weekend and was subsequently relieved of his duties by annoyed owner Dimitris Melissanidis. While with AEK Poyet and Taricco won 18 of their 28 games in charge.

Taricco, 43, joined the Blues in 1994 and went on to make 169 starts and three sub appearances, scoring seven goals before joining Tottenham for a fee of £1.775 million in 1998.

While Town’s 2015/16 hasn’t matched their play-off finish of last season there currently seems little prospect of McCarthy moving on - other than if he is offered a more attractive post elsewhere with the Blues boss also having been among those linked with Villa - having signed a new contract stretching to 2018 with an option for a further two years only three months ago.

They will be aware of any bargains to be had in the Greek league and will be sure to bring out the best of Freddie, Bish, Didzy and Andre. With these plus Bart, Jonas and Tommy, we will have a youngish promising core (all the others are just pension seekers/journeymen squad fillers)

In any event, we can't continue having our manager telling players (in so many words) that they are not good enough and if they try to play football or even cross the halfway line, they'll get mullahed. Any wonder our 1st half goals are as rare as hens' teeth?

If this was anywhere other than in The Sun then I might start to get excited!

What we desperately need is a manager that will not keep backing failing players after a bad game, or one that won't keep being professional to the media's soft questioning. Throwing around how happy he is, and how great the owner is when the pressure is on. That will definitely promote the kind of atmosphere those higher scholars of real football so crave.

Gcon - I dont like Mick and want him out but you are right and i 100% agree with you there is definitely blame with Evans and that most certainly needs to be addressed!

I would welcome this as I feel MM has taken us as far as he can with this bunch. Whoever comes in next needs to get rid of some dross. MM has done a solid job of stabilising the crap left behind by those numpties Keane and Jewell, but he's also shown himself up to be quite one dimensional. I personally feel our great club has seriously lost its way. The football is Mick's domain so he can't really offer many excuses for the dire nature of it. Yes, there were key injuries, but there were also potentially exciting youngsters waiting for their chance. Evans I feel has to bear the brunt for the failings of this season by not committing funds so that we could compete with the top 6. Nothing will change until someone is prepared to see the 'bigger picture'.

Sadly the board lacks real football intelligence which leads them towards people they've already heard of and who happen to be unemployed at the time without considering that there is a reason that they are unemployed. It will never happen but I'd love someone from the club to say that they had identified someone tearing it up in Peru or wowing the German second division

Best news I have heard regarding the Town for a long time... paper talk though, not worth the ink used.

A bit indifferent to this, Mick apparently has a deal for another 2 years with the option of 2 more, I don't see change anytime soon.

As for some of the " dinosaur " comments jesus christ like Mick or not give him a little respect he's done for the most part a decent job here.

I've been in the Mick Out camp for a little while but I do think that he deserves a bit more respect then what he has been getting from some on here. He did keep us up and he has done wonders on a shoestring budget. However if he was more adaptable and less cosy with certain players then I think we would have a few more points in the bag.

To me MM is a bit like an emergency superhead which the government parachute into failing schools. Goes back-to-basics, weeds out the troublemakers and brings in personnel that suit his style as well as his mentality. He sin;t someone who can push on from that breaking point.

Poyet and Taricco, on paper at least seems, like a perfect mix of Champiohship experience as well as having that bit of flair. If this were to happen then I'll have no objectations. Also it should happen now rather than later.

Thanks Prebsa - Good to know we can agree on something from time to time!

You are right, it does need addressing but I just don't know how that will happen without fan pressure. The local media should be applying more pressure to push Evans for a statement on his intentions for the club with regards to funding and commitment. The FFP rules have been abused so extensively for such a long time that it is no longer a valid reason for not funding the club.

I like MM, he's pretty honest and I think that some fans are unrealistic. I actually think had Fraser and DMG been fit all season and bishop as well we would have the extra 3 wins that would have us in the play offs.

However he has a budget that is significantly lower than every club above us I suspect. At least 5 of them have spent significantly more.

Evans is also getting stick but he holds the debt in his own companies which keeps us safe from the wolf and loads all the risk financially at his door.

I'm not sure how much he's allowed to put in under the FFP rules but I was under the impression he puts the maximum in and that amount went down this season and I think goes down again next.

He tinted down huge bids for DMG and Murph. I wish we played beautiful football and I wish we were in the top 6 but if he goes does anyone think on the same
Budget we Couldn't be a Fulham or worse? They spent £9'm on one player and are still 4th from
Bottom and still 7 points below the number needed to stay up 3 seasons ago when Mick came in.

If we can sign another Jonny Williams and Fraser on loan and fill the places of Stewart, tabb toure and who ever else is out of contract with better players, plus a couple more academy players break through we can do better next season

Mattinlondon - spot on ....... did a good job but latterly found wanting & hesitant to develop young players (yes I know he has now thrown Dozzell in ..... but why not a few more & why not earlier?) and play more positive football.
Gone as far as he can in my opinion but thanks Mick for what you did.

Sounds like a good replacement as might actually bring some interest back . However if no transfer budget then we will be stuffed either way . Anyway it's in the sun so don't believe a word !

Yes this would be great if it ever happened, but Mick still has a job to do let's hope next season will be a lot better with some new fresh faces in the team.

This club is being micro-managed by a load of sun readers. No wonder it's going down the tubes.

Financial backing from Evans to MM for signing on fees and wages etc is hearsay and only used as excuses
Style of play , team selection , negative formations , predictable changes are all down to MM and factual .
Would love Poyet and Taricco and their approach to how football should be played regardless of money

The budget would be a show stopper for any new manager coming in, unless inexperienced or looking for a step up. I think MM will go unless assurances for more funds are forthcoming.

Gcon - Yes! After all we both just want to see Ipswich be the best it can! fan pressure is hard because even if we get on average 15k next year could be more or less but that's my guess Evans still won't see that as low enough to do anything. I think it would have to get to maybe 10k for something to happen.

FFP is funny because we as a club seem to make sure we live and breath FFP but other clubs spend as if they have never heard of it. Until clubs start to get heavily punished for it I don't see why we can start to get a little more funding. I don't think fans are screaming for a lot (maybe some are) but even 5mil would be plenty to get in 3 quality players at this level which would help push us into the promotion category of teams! Maybe that wouldn't be enough. What do people think?

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a big managerial merry go round during the summer - obviously depending on who fails to get promoted from the championship - but if the likes of Burnley,Hull,Middlesbro,Derby,Sheffield Wednesday fail then their managers could all conceivably get the push/move on - i'm sure Mick will get linked with any of those jobs.

Would obviously love to see Tarrico back, not that fussed on Poyet tbh..time will tell.

'The Sun' OUT......no reference to this rag should be made on any football related forums such as this or for that matter at any time on any issue ...Google 'Hillsborough sun front page' if you need to know why.
