Town Confirm Williams Loan Signing
Thursday, 27th Feb 2014 16:53

Town have confirmed the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on loan until the end of March.

Williams, 20, trained with the Blues squad at Playford Road this morning and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Birmingham.

The Wales international, who scored for Palace’s U21s in their 2-1 victory over Town on Monday, will wear the number 25 shirt.

He told the club site he was surprised to be back in Suffolk so soon after Monday's match: “I didn’t expect to be back here so quickly after playing at Ipswich on Monday but I’m really looking forward to my time here.

“[Palace manager] Tony Pulis told me I would be going out on loan after the game against Manchester United last weekend and I think there were two or three clubs interested.

“I spoke to Mick McCarthy after the game on Monday though, and he told me Ipswich were interested and where he sees me playing in the team. He talked about his ambitions and I was excited about the challenge of coming here.

“I know what a great club Ipswich is. I know they have been in the top flight and I know that’s where they want to get back to.”

Born in Kent, 5ft 6in tall Williams came through the youth system at Selhurst Park and made his senior debut in August 2011.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 starts and 37 sub appearances, scoring one goal, but has not started a Premier League game since the Eagles' promotion last summer. In September he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months.

Highly-rated Williams, who recently signed a new contract with Palace until the summer of 2018, was a constant threat on the left of midfield on Monday and can also operate in the centre and on the right.

Qualifying via his father, Williams has won four full Wales caps having previously played at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In addition to Town, who are understood to be paying 100 per cent of his wages while he is at Portman Road, Charlton and an unnamed third Championship club were chasing the midfielder.

............ how is it that EVERY signing we make is an 'great' signing in the eyes of some ???? ....... and after all, we'll still have square pegs in round holes and until that's sorted nothing much will change in terms of entertainment or results.

Lets hope he can add creative flair to the midfield through the middle it is much needed , the only question now is who can finish chances created ?

.......... some supporters deserve, and expect, much more than what's going on - others expect nothing other than a ball to be kicked, and they'll be more than satisfied.

Maybe that is why we have been, and will remain, in this mediocre Championship (or lower) for ever and a day.

Ambition within this Club ? - absolute JOKE - there is NONE - and according to some of these posts, there doesn't need to be any !!!! We'll eventually level out with around 10,000 easily satisfied Charlies who can't wait to see whatever is served up. Week in - week out.

the amount of negative comments on here do my head in. Out of all you moaners have you ever even see this guy play? he is absolute class, whether hes played on the wing or in the centre he'll do well. what striker could we bring in on loan that's decent?its hard to find one. stick and support what we've got.

Lord_Mac added 21:15 - Feb 27
Agree with luke_38 - how do we know that we haven't been trying to sign other strikers, such as Wickham and haven't been able to match Sunderland's requirements. Leeds, using borrowed funds which they may or may not get if and when Cellino takes over, may have stretched themselves further.

JWM ....... you forgot your standard line 'go elsewhere' - far too many are already making that decision, or staying at home, without encouraging it to escalate further. But you wouldn't understand that would you ?

Something MUST be wrong for the ground to be half empty - or hadn't you and a few others noticed that either ?

dosent matter if this lad in the new ronaldo when you have a manager who instructs players to defend and hoof the ball play with no ambition at all.
we have become a horrible team under mcarthy we dont even try and play we hoof it up try and nick a goal and then defend it -it really is nasty stuff and anybody who cant see that i dont think can properly understand the game. there is no excuse for either mick has been allowed to bring players in decent ones too they can all play football but we are going nowhere long term under him.
he was ok to come in and just keep us up but he should have gone then as there is no future in his style of play so we may as well start building. micks best awnser id stick the ball in the mixer-just pump it in continually and see what happens-we did not try and beat bolton or blackpool and if he thought we were going to lose at leicster anyway why not just go for the throat. hope this lad does well but am counting the days til we get this old dinosaur out of our club and get back to playing attacking football on the deck in keeping with the traditions of our great club-we deserve better than this nonsense

@blueboy1981 - a few stats:

Average attendance at PR so far this season is only 273 down on the last one, practically halting a downward trend of 1,000 to 1,500 every season since the last high-point in 2009-10.

Attendees at PR have witnessed 8 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses this season, a pretty good record. We've only lost to one team (Leeds) outside the current top 4 at home this season.

They have seen 24 goals scored by Town, an average of 1.5 per game (the same as QPR and Wigan, more than Brighton, Blackburn or Watford). On 3 occasions, we have scored 3 goals. Only twice have Town failed to score at home.

The football may not always have been the prettiest, but the fans can hardly complain about the results, goals and crowds.

..... one thing our Club is famous for (recent times) is it has some of the easiest satisfied, contented, low expectancy fans in the game. Ecstatic, almost orga*mic, when we sign (wait for it) another LOAN MIDFIELDER.

Not sure too many Club's would envy us for being this way.

Guthrum ........ doesn't alter the fact - the ground is half EMPTY - WHY ???????

I know the reason, along with many others - 'not always been the prettiest' ?? - I would say much has been diabolical in terms of entertainment.
If of course you know what decent Football should be !

Impressed with your configuration of stats tho'.

Blueboy I disagree. The ones displaying positive comments are optimistic, realistic and patient. MM and TC have worked wonders in the year and a half they have been here. To get to the next level will take time. The football may not be perfect but result wise it has been a lot better. As Guthrum stated we have only failed to score twice at home this season which isn't bad at all.

Silly me I was forgetting that anyone else other than Mick will come in and with one waive of their magic wand suddenly transform us into another Barcelona!

We are where we are due to years and years of incompetence mostly from when Sheepshanks decided it would be a great idea to appoint a complete rookie as our manager to save a few quid! The rot set in when Evans and the idiot Clegg appointed duff managers that wasted millions. It will take a lot of time to mend all the damage that has been done but some of you on here live in this age of instant gratification. The club is being turned around under Mick and it's up to us fans to back him and the players. I'm fed up with all the constant negativity that is all.

Guthrum added 21:54 - Feb 27
The ground is half empty - and has been for many years - because Town have been a long time out of the Prem, for a number of seasons we have been subjected to dismal losing runs and relegation struggles, football supporting is an expensive hobby in difficult economic times, the kids are force-fed Premiership football non-stop nowadays, some of the performances have been poor and dull, lots of reasons.

GerkensBeard added 21:58 - Feb 27
I still can't understand why some people continue to slate the way we play. Yes I do not like the way we play but can you blame Mick with the personnel he's got? Anyone who's a season ticket holder will see that when we do try to play football we just can't go it. We lose the ball within 3 passes. And the reason why Mick is having to play us this way is because we have no quality!!! That midfield of Skuse and Hyam and basically everyone else in the team apart from McGoldrick have no quality, just work hard. And mick has to adopt this playing stuff because if we play football with these players we will get smashed and torn apart just like you saw in the Jewell days. Quality players cost money you aren't going to pick them up on free transfers and until ME invests we will continue to see this type of football. Look at Micks Wolves team Jarvis and Kightly on the wings (quality players) and with quality players Wolves in their championship winning year played good counter attacking football, I would love to see us eventually play this football under Mick but until ME invests it won't happen. I am as annoyed as anyone that he plays square pegs in round holes but Mick must feel that he's doing it for the good of the team for us not getting smashed each week. I still feel Mick and Terry are doing the best with what they've got, were moving forward from last year, good team chemistry, and money to spend in the summer in the midfield and attacking areas will make us a top 6 side next season.

And another thing you can't win with some people!! First you want a 20 goal a season striker and when that's not enough you want a midfielder who's gonna score 10+. If we get both next youll be wanting a right back who will score 10 a season!! Look at Burnley. Don't see Jones and Marney banging the goals in!! Or Drinkwater or James for Leicester! Guess well just have to sign Yaya Toure and be done with it

We shall see what happens with this lad in the team. On the face of it a good signing , I have seen him play and he has a bit of class , no doubt about that. Mm tactics and the way he is deployed may be another thing altogether. Let's see what happens saturday.

Hdd the crowd numbers been increasing - I would have taken your point. As it is - ....... Bulls*it.

It appears we have a midfielder who can not only pass accurately runs at defenders and has the ability th see and digest what's going on around him but he shoots and scores goals, a midfielder who might actually chip in with a few goals.
