McCarthy: We Were The Better Team
Saturday, 9th Mar 2013 18:04

Manager Mick McCarthy thought the Blues were the better side but bemoaned his team’s failure to put the ball in the net after their 0-0 draw at Peterborough. The Town boss had praise for Posh keeper Bobby Olejnik, who made important saves from Frank Nouble and David McGoldrick in either half, but believed his side ought to have been awarded a penalty for handball against Posh midfielder Jack Payne after the break.

McCarthy said: “I think we were the better team. If there was one performance which deserved to win I think it was ours, but you don’t get it on what you deserve, you’ve got to put the ball in the net.

“But the goalkeeper had a big part to play in that, he made two fabulous saves and we didn’t make the most of our opportunities at times.

“I think we had most of them and the best of the game and there was another decision, a clear penalty, I don’t know how it hasn’t been given.

“He’s moved his hand to the ball. I’ve just looked at it again, I can’t see anything other than a penalty. I’m not one for rose-coloured specs, if it’s not, it’s not, but he’s got to give that.”

But it was Olejnik McCarthy felt did most the thwart his side: “But for two fantastic saves today, we score two goals. All right there were others, but he’s got them the points, that’s my view. Two fabulous saves.

“Maybe we should give him a bit of toffee rather than giving our lads [stick] because they did nothing wrong, the header was good, the shot was good and the keeper was brilliant.”

He added: “I said beforehand I’d take a point and we’re going to have to take the point because it keeps Peterborough down below us, but there’s a slight disappointment because I thought we played well enough in the game to have won it.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson thought his team didn’t take their opportunities when they were there, but conceded that defeat would have been harsh on the Blues: “I suppose it’s a clean sheet, that’s one of the positives, but we just weren’t clinical enough when we got the chances, same as on Tuesday.

“I don’t know if we did enough to win the game, I’ve got to be honest, but when you get chances at this stage of the season, particularly when games are so tight, you really need to take them.”

Regarding the penalty call, Ferguson was unsighted: “I didn’t see it, I honestly didn’t see it. If it is, it’s about time we had a bit of luck off the officials because we’ve had enough bad luck, if you want to call it luck, so maybe we’ve got some today.”

It was important not to lose, but with wins for Birmingham, Bristol City, Charlton, Sheff Wed and Blackpool it wasn't a great afternoon. We need to continue our good home run in the next two matches.

How comes Sheffield Wednesday have Wickham on loan? I thought we had first say in his deal? We need goal scorers, and he is one. However, today was a game we should have won as we played well. I guess we'll have to keep our home form going now, Bolton will be hard opponents. Point better than none I guess!

2 goals in 7 games means there may be trouble ahead.

We are putting real pressure on our home form now.

TractorBoy666 - we might have first say, but we don't have to say yes! ;)

Saw this coming today - all the pre-match talk seemed to be about us not losing rather than going all out for the win. Given that my pessimistic side thought we'd get beaten, I can't complain.

We aren't conceding. If you're not conceding, you can't lose. If we draw every game between now and the season, it'd probably be enough to keep us safe. Yes, we'll probably lose a few... but we'll probably win a couple as well to make up for it.

And put it this way - yes, we're 4pts off the dropzone. But we're 4pts off the top half too. That's the Championship for you!

I think Mick's got it all under control, folks. Let's try not to worry too much!

Good performance today. We didn't really get any luck and the Peterborough defence was absolutely solid to be fair with their keeper making a couple of great saves. The game really felt like their were 'goals in it' but the 0-0 probably reflects why both teams are at the bottom. Mclean isn't going to score in the month of Sundays, Nouble showed flashes of class and hit the post (but really you have to score 1v1's at this level) and McGoldrick seems like more of a supporting role striker rather than pummelling the goal himself. Hate to say it but DJ would have probably had a hatful today.

Really pleased with Tabb who put himself about and Hewitt slotted in the back nicely - a bit like Cresswell I suppose when he started playing regularly.

All in all a decent game and content with the result, although it would have been nice to go bananas on the terrace behind the goal there! Brilliant turnout by the way - made it sound like a home game - actually it was an even better atmosphere!

Just got back from the game, atmosphere was electric by the tractorboys, 5 star peformance from the blues, only thing that was missing was the goal, but you have to credit their keeper who made some great saves to keep the clean sheet for them.

Gutted not to take the 3 points but we move on to next week vs Bolton, COYB!

Just got home from the game, absolutely fantastic away support today, thought we just about did enough to take the three points but a lack of real quality in the final third cost us although there keeper did make a couple of good saves, especially Noubles header. The pen was a cert as far as I could see, def hand to ball, the ref just bottled it, not a ref basher as i used to be one but thought he had a poor game generally. Think we'll just about have enough to stay up but were gonna have to get at least one of the strikers scoring pretty soon, cant rely on the officials giving us decisions. COYB

Thought we where great today, yes it was a pen yes their keeper had a good day but we should have won. Nouble, Hewitt, Tabb,Dury all had good games and the usual great hard work fron Hyam and Ndaw. We cant go down can we not when we can be this good away from home although with our support you would have thought we where at home.

It's most likely a money thing with Wickham, we can't afford his wages. Think that's been mentioned before on here.
Good to keep a clean sheet, such a shame we could not get the win. New players in have maybe unsettled the side abit and after the midweek game it's probably taken a lot out of the nine that finished the game.

The positives are that we went away from home, played well and kept a clean sheet. The negative is our seeming inability to beat teams at our end of the table. If we go down, that is what will cost us. Let's hope that we manage four points from the next two games otherwise things will start to look quite difficult.

We are keeping clean sheets and picking up points, not losing today was equally as important as winning in a funny kind of way and I'm sure the players would have been well aware of that so hopefully they will be happy going into next week, as should we. Think we missed Chopra today but by all accounts Nouble did very well. Forget Connor Wickham, he's only just got in the team at Weds and just the one goal so far, he's history, get behind what we have.

Seems like Mick was impressed with this Olejnik guy. Just looked him up: 26 years old, product of the Villa youth system, former Austrian U21...could we be taking a look at him if we're still not sorted in the keeper department next season and Peterborough go down (which they probably will)?

Full marks defence, but lack of scoring power means it's difficult to imagine us making a promotion challenge next year as things stand.

Fellow posters, unfortunately i'm armed forces and living in Devon so can't get to many games, but following on BBC yesterday kept hearing the name Mendez-Laing on the wing, are we not after a decent winger??? Anyone who went yesterday care to post good or bad, sounds good on commentary??? ITID!!

Well said paulnstar this lot on here supported Jewell remember they are all like sheep we have decent defense midfield poor no width no flair and certainly no strikers but you all believe everything will be ok I imagine better sides than this team have thought they are too good to go down we will see.

Draws away from home will be seen as good ONLY if we WIN our home games!

As I said 2-3 weeks ago, the conundrum is do we continue to aim for defensive stability (in MF ) at the expense of creativity to provide the bullets for our strikers?

If try to rely solely on gaining draws ("not losing"), we , will I fear go down, becuase team around us are winning the odd gain, therefore eroding our points gap between us and them.

Stretchstar, he wasn't that good at all tbh, definitely not worth signing, big chunky lad, showed some good skill early on but faded, and was subbed.
Great atmosphere today! Just shame we couldn't nick a goal, mom was N'Daw, thought he was class, simple passes and breaking up play.
Defence looked very good, Elliott came into the game more after a shaky start. Tabb button was good, looked fit enough too.
Not much you can say about the attack, the score line says it all, good save in each half from boro keeper, but we didn't create enough.
Great away support was highlight, although I hear many were unable to get on the trains because there were only three carriages. Same applied for the return, I was at the station and they were trying to encourage town fans not to get the Ipswich train back, but to get a Nardge one and get bus from another stop :/
Think the clubs should talk to the transport networks a bit better, I knew there was going to be a good crowd today and I wasn't the one selling tickets!

Mick's totally sorted the defence out since arriving,it's a shame that the goals have dried up at the other end...I fancy us to have a really good season next year - IF we can stay up AND buy a goalscorer in the summer.

Tractorboy 666- could be that it was Wickham who didn't fancy a return to PR. We had first option but the player would need to agree. Just speculation.
