Ex-Bolton and West Brom Defender on Trial
Tuesday, 18th Sep 2012 09:09

Former Bolton Wanderers and West Brom central defender Abdoulaye Meite is reported to be spending the week training with the Blues. The 31-year-old Ivorian international had his contract with French side Dijon FCO terminated by mutual consent before the transfer window closed at the end of August.

Paris-born Meite was with French clubs Red Star and Olympique Marseille before moving to English football in 2006 when he joined Bolton.

His time at the Reebok came to an end after a fall-out with manager Gary Megson, who blamed Meite for two goals in a game at Manchester United, leading to the player's refusal to go out for the second half.

In the summer of 2008 he moved on to West Brom for an initial fee of £2 million before joining his most recent club last summer.

Capped 49 times by the Ivory Coast, scoring one goal, 6ft 1in tall Meite won the Intertoto Cup while with Marseille as well as reaching the UEFA and French cup finals and has also appeared at the African Nations Cup.

The Blues continue to search for central defensive additions with Southend's Bilel Mohsni and former FC Köln man Kevin Pezzoni both having spent time at the club in recent weeks. Mohsni is now training with Birmingham while Pezzoni has returned to Germany.

So we turned down a 6" 5 23 year old and a 6" 3 25 year old Centre half and are looking at someone shorter? I thought we badly needed height and youth in the team?

the key thing we need is a talker, an organsier. we have plenty of youth in the back 5. having two 30 somethings is not too many. at 6ft1 he's not exactly short

Desperation time?

Seems similar to last season when we searched all over for a centre half and ended up with Sonko

I think it is true to say that PJ knows that one more wrong signing and he is out ... I really think the guy likes the club and COULD do a good job here once he sorts himself out and realises which direction he wants to go in. He KNOWS he needs a CB (or two) and he is certainly looking at all the options .. but you will notice that they are all "cheap" options clearly meaning that he has not got the funds - OR that his 93 day loan star IS ALREADY set to sign AT THE END of the loan window ... which, after all, is the most sensible time to sign them unless you want to lose them for the Christmas rush ! So - please remember how the system of loans and days works out ... Don't lose heart YET - but remind me to lose heart with you if no-one arrives before the loan window closes!!! :)

Does my memory serve me right and he turned down the chance to join us on loan once before?

Having said that I'd rather have him than Mohsni. Good experience and hard man. Can't comment on Pezzoni as I've never seen him play.

However may be yet another false dawn.

Ps Falling out with Megson isn't uncommon.

Theres an old saying divide and rule, i think Evans has achieved that with our club.
Reading the posts on here im so depressed to see so many fan having a go at each other.
How as our club stooped to this. Every new manager should be given time to build a team but in reality the last 3 managers have all been the wrong appointments Magilton never had any experience, Keane was a car crash waiting to happen and the current incumbant is not and never was up to the job and i base that on his 2 previous jobs.
I go back to Sheepshanks tenure to spot where it all went wrong i believe he had his own personal agenda and not the interests of the club at heart. I cant forget how when winning the play off final he had to run on the pitch to bask in the glory. Please tell me how many other club chairmen have behaved in that way and when they paraded back in Ipswich they couldnt get him off the mic. Remember fans under his chairmanship the club ran up massive debts. Thanks to Sheepshanks we now have an owner who dosent even want to converse with his clubs supporters. Im sure Jewell tries his best but its just not good enough. We as fans have to just sit by and watch our beloved club being dragged down like it or not theres not much we can do about other withdraw our support. Every fan is entitled to their view to the negative fans i say still get behind the team im sure all you want is for them to succeed in spite of Jewell. To the positive fans good on yer for getting behind the club but please get yer heads out of the sand things have are and have been bleak for to long now.

If he's been freed by Dijon, i doubt he'll cut the mustard with us

Jewell still fails to move with a game which has passed him by. Defenders at this level need to be mobile and have top notch communication. Jewell again just wants beef-cakes. This will get worse before it gets better. Look to the lower leagues like Lambert and Adkins have done to great effect. The board should do the same for a manager.

We are really scraping the barrel now - PJ has had so much time to address the CB position its a joke - the next 2 home games could see the end of PJ reign!

Bob7781 I think your analysis of David Sheepshanks is a little unfair, based as it is on him running on the pitch at the play off final and getting us into debt. I recall his tears and the emotion in his voice that day, not his hogging the limelight!
As for the debt, well yes he was the man in charge and at the end of the 2000-2001 season we were all delighted that we had finished 5th in the Premier League and were in Europe. The next season it all went terribly wrong on the pitch, we only knew how to play one way and teams caught us out, followed by relegation, the financial crisis in football, the collapse of ITV digital and a squad full of players on Premier league wages that nobody wanted. The building of 2 new stands with hindsight was a financial step too far for us but done at a time when we were most definitely on the up.
David Sheepshanks was naive but to portray him as you have is a little harsh!!

Disagree with the Sheepshanks comment.......... I'm certain in his own opinion he made many mistakes, but he was 100% behind Ipswich and one of our greatest supporters, he always had lots of time for the fans and would happily go out of his way to talk to anyone supporting Ipswich anywhere, that's a fact. He always came across as a genuine nice guy and I believe that's exactly what he was. I would much rather the days under his chairmanship, to those of today, with an average, understaffed and under-performing set of players and staff and an owner whose so far up his own backside i've never even seen his face?

I have to agree with the original appraisal of sheep shanks. Through his dreadful mismanagement of funds we went into administration after he had given himself a £250,000 bonus the previous season. Through his negligence many local business,s ended up with 5 pence in the pound for their work. A catering friend of mine was thousands out of pocket. As for the latest trial list goodness knows where we are going.

I am sick to death of reading morons on here saying if PJ doesn't do this or he does that he will be fired. Unless you're ME there is no possible way for you to know anything like that. Stop posting this BS because it makes you look like a complete moron!

I once shared a flight with David Sheepshanks. I was wearing my town shirt and he was in the seat next to me. Once we were airborne we chatted and he apologised at great length to me as a fan and a season ticket holder for what had happened. I found him a sincere and charming gentleman who was as disappointed as the rest of us over decision made and circumstances that he could not effect. Met him twice after that and again found him to be a thoroughly decent chap and a tractorboy.

As a daily commuter to London I'm amazed that I've noticed Mr Sheepshanks on a number of occasions, at the train station and on the tube. I'm sure he can well afford a taxi across London but by all accounts he chooses public transport more often than not. He probably rides first class on the train, but still.

Happy about this.

Roy Hodgson rated him at WBA and that is good enough for me. He knows a footballer.
