Sharp: Town Fans Did a Special Thing
Sharp: Town Fans Did a Special Thing
Tuesday, 6th Mar 2012 09:34

Southampton striker Billy Sharp says the ovation the Town support gave him after he scored at Portman Road earlier in the season soon after the death of his new-born son Luey was a “special thing”. The 26-year-old, who has revealed he spoke to the Blues in January, could face Town with his new club Southampton at St Mary’s this evening.

Sharp said: "It was a special thing they did for me and it's nice some away fans actually like me.”

Town had a £2.3 million offer for the former Sheffield United man turned down in the summer and Sharp says there was renewed in interest in the last transfer window: "I spoke to them in January.

“I nearly joined them when I was speaking to Southampton and everyone knows what happened when I played against them earlier in the season.

"It surprised me, because I've just scored against their team who they support through and through.

"To see the home crowd clap an opposing player who has just scored is surprising. It was really nice to see."

Sharp, who has added one goal to his current tally of 11 goals since joining the Saints, has been amongst Southampton’s subs in recent games.

Mullet. Please don't judge me - and the vast majority of those who applauded - by your own standards.

Marshall Mullet - I applauded along with many others purely becasue the guy had been through a hell of a week and for anyone to return to "work" so soon is a massive deal. i for one was proud of the reaction, there are bigger things in life than Football. We would all do well to remember that!

Marshalls_Mullet, that is a very harsh thing of you to say. The lad had just lost his newborn son, I'm embarrassed that a Town fan would see what other fans did that day in such a way. He has only said good things about his club, and our club has only shown him respect.

Marshalls_Mullet - fair enough... but if what you're getting at is that the fans applauded him simply as a ploy to get the lad to sign for the club, then no, I sincerely doubt it. I'd suggest it was just a moment of human to human compassion...

@ Marshalls_Mullet - To repeat what others have said... Not everyone is as immoral as you suggest, and can feel and display empathy.

Braintree: I like the spelling correction but your grammar is incorrect!

Must HAVE been going through hell. Not "of."

Must try harder ;-)

This guy almost pleaded to come to ITFC - so why is he playing against us tonight ?

Two people totally responsible for that - and it doesn't include Billy Sharp.

Yes, results have improved of late - but don't forget:- 'the same people are running this outfit' !!!!
