Jewell: Phillips Was a Target
Jewell: Phillips Was a Target
Thursday, 8th Sep 2011 11:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell has revealed that Blackpool striker Kevin Phillips was another one on his list of summer transfer targets. Phillips, who came close to joining Town in 1997 prior to his switch from Watford to Sunderland, has so far scored four goals in five games since signing for the Tangerines in the close season.

Jewell said: "He's a terrific player, even now he's still performing and he's 38. We actually spoke about bringing him here but Blackpool seemed to tie that one up quite early.

“He's just a natural goalscorer and even though he's 38 or whatever, he's still got a huge appetite for the game and is a terrific finisher."

The Blues boss expects a tough game at Bloomfield Road: "They've got some really good players and Ian [Holloway]'s put together a good squad.

"Even though they got relegated last year I think they still came down with a lot of credit from the way they played. They've been brilliant since Ollie arrived and they've carried that good work on."

Fans should note that Town have a very limited number of seats left for Saturday's match, which are available by calling the Ticket Office or by visiting Planet Blue.

Any unsold seats will be on the turnstiles at Blackpool from 2pm on Saturday but there may only be a few remaining, if any, and purchasing in advance is advised.

Rather than the drip, drip can't he just publish a full list!

Can we request it under the freedom of information act?

'Blackpool seemed to tie that one up quite early.'

Once again it adds weight to my theory, work smarter mr jewell... not harder!

E3Blue..Totally agree, not really interested in who we were looking at or might have been. What we need now is another CB and a proper RB. Until then pls can we have no more stories of who we never got, too frustrating!

Maybe Clegg and Evans could let us know who else they talked to about the mangers job before we signed Jewell?

Come on, we were never going to get Phillips AND Chopra. This would never have come out if we didn't have Blackpool next up. Chopra will be the better value player. Would be good if he could prove it on Saturday.

Hey jewell, stop telling us who you tried and failed to sign. I am really bored with it.

We get the point you are trying, (apart from being on the golf course on deadline day, which is a bit odd) please don't labour the point.

Moan, moan, moan. Some fans moan if they hear nothing, moan if they hear something. If Jewell kept his mouth shut, people would not know he's trying to get payers in and complain he's not trying, so he says he's trying but for reasons he wont say, he didnt get him. Give the man a break.

Not interested in your failures PJ! Not many players signed on fees - just a load of laons and freebies - many over 30 years old and injury prone. Lots of promises which weren't backed-up and now you tell us about players you failed to attract. Please tell us about the permanant signings you have lined up for January - because as it stands; Chopra, Cresswell and possibly JET apart, I can't see how on earth we are building a side for this year - let alone next! Back to square one in the Summer I suspect.

Broomfield. What they all said was exactly the opposite. They all claimed that location made it difficult to attract players. I have never seen any comment that the facilities were not up to scratch. We can attract players, that's clear with PJ's recruitment policy to date but we have to accept that some footballers look at a wider agenda when reviewing footballing options and that some halfwits will prefer to be small fish in a big bowl as opposed to taking the risk of perhaps being a bigger fish. They make me sick. Most of us would give our eye teeth to play at the highest level. But these guys just hide behind contracts and playing situations that give them the lifestyle without actually having to play.

we spoke about getting him here????
this does not mean he was top of our list, i would have said he wasn't in the top 5.
i would have been disappointed if we signed him good player but about to retire i would rather younger players.

PJ loves the oldies, the difficult ones and the potential of the unfit.

He's got a full hand!

It's up to him to instill the collective belief and (well, well, well) his fitness coach to get them on the pitch.

Huge challenges. I do NOT know why but I think PJ can do his bit. He can't do it all.

So a free, 38 year old Kevin Phillips coming to Portman road wouldn't have pleased you Jas0999?

Are there any players out there we were not thinking of bringing in!!!

It seems I'm in a minority but given the lack of transparency over previous regimes transfer dealings I welcome Jewell letting us know who we were in for even if the deal doesn't come through. He appears to be targeting what would be some top notch championship players. Surely better to know we were in for Upson, Lansbury, Phillips etc than having to guess which anonymous ex-Sunderland reserve Keano could agree personal terms with?

Sorry - "couldn't agree personal terms with"
