Yep, I couldn’t see that happening! In the Fairs Cup (and continued into the early days of the UEFA Cup by the Football League/FA), there was the rule of only one team per city, and there were quite a few “[City] XI” teams in the competition at the beginning. Bobby Robson, then at Fulham, actually played and scored for the London XI against a Frankfurt team in 1955 during the first staging of the Fairs Cup, coincidentally on 26th October of that year. | |

Twelve of the other sixteen teams have been guessed more often than us. There’s a slight drop down from the third-last to the second-last in the list of percentages. I’m surprised that one of the teams currently on 94% isn’t a bit higher. Two are currently on 100%. | |

As TractorCam mentioned, it was in the Europa League in 2009/10, its first season after rebranding from the UEFA Cup. Roy Hodgson saved them from relegation by narrowly pipping Reading on goal difference in 2008, they finished 7th in 2009 and then went all the way to the final against Atlético Madrid, playing 17 matches in the process. Diego Forlán scored both for Atlético, including the winner late into extra time - de Gea and Agüero were also playing for them. Fulham beat Juventus 5-4 on aggregate in the last 16, coming back from a 3-1 first leg defeat (they also went 0-1 down early in the second leg). I remember being pretty gutted for them when they lost in the final. | |
