While I was shocked by the added 13 minutes yesterday 13:39 - Aug 7 with 1626 viewsRadlett_blue

if you consider the 3 minute stoppage for Donacien's injury, it would appear this is happening all across the Football League. The shortest match across the first 35 fixtures of the campaign came at the Riverside where Middlesbrough's 1-0 home defeat by Millwall in the Championship saw 'just' eight minutes and 45 seconds added on across the two halves. 17 minutes in total were also added to the Charity Shield game.
The instruction has gone out to refs to add on the exact amount of time for gaol celebrations & substitutions so I suppose this shows how much time was actually being genuinely lost by these things. It's certainly going to make defending a lead harder, especially away from home. So we don't want our players sitting deep because there's only a couple of minutes left on the clock, when there might be 10+ minutes to play. In another thread, a poster correctly said that this should lead to substitutions being made later.
I also noticed yesterday that the ref - whom I thought was very good - seemed disinclined to keep giving free kicks for trivial fouls, involving minimal contact. I think this is another instruction & I hope it's continued. I noticed some players yesterday exasperated because they weren't getting a foul awarded which would have been given last season.

"the ref...... seemed disinclined to keep giving free kicks for trivial fouls, involving minimal contact."

It is another FA instruction, although there was an awful lot of leeway given for a foul on Hirst very early on and the penalty. There were a couple late on when we were defending which looked like free kicks to me.

Sky commentators on Friday also said we can expect to see plenty more yellow cards for kicking the ball away this season for the same reason.

given what happened against us last season i did find it ironic that Hladky was booked the first time he could be accused of taking his time

I was a bit worried near the end that Hladky was going to get a second yellow for dithering. With the extended periods of added time this season, I reckon a keeper will get a red in the next few weeks.

they're obviously clamping down on it (as usual with our luck the timing of this is a year too late but there we go, at least we still got promoted..) Last year a keeper getting a yellow for time wasting almost guaranteed him that a sending off wouldn't follow unless things got totally ridiculous. It was just a bit of window dressing for the officials to say they'd kept an eye on it.

Was it excessive? I wasn't really paying attention to that specially.

Not really, but telling that he got booked the first time it was even questioned i suppose.

I remember a time when 4 minutes was considered a lot for added on time, not moaning though if it stops annoying time wasting

Does anyone know how the added on minutes are calculated?

I saw tranmere vs Barrow at the weekend and they added 5 minutes on in the first half, which only had a goal and no seeming deliberate time wasting.

And then even our game I thought 13 was excessive.

The clock is stopped at following events...

When a penalty is given, until it is taken
When a sub is being made until play restarts
When a goal is scored, before play restarts
When a physio comes on the pitch until play restarts
(Plus when VAR is used)

Plus your normal additions for general timewasting

I think it shows how long the top events were taken, and that the nominal, 30 seconds a goal or sub just wasn't long enough. The goal celebreations can be excessive, taken up to 2 minutes before play restarts as an example

The whole thing is arse about face, just stop the clock for Subs, time wasting etc, when the game hits 90 minutes it's finished.

I think it's ridiculous these new rules. The added time is gonna cause absolute mayhem, so many goals even in GW1 90+ minutes. I mean, it's good for the neutral, but fk me I never want to sit and watch us defend a narrow lead for thirteen extra minutes again.

A minor detail but I would assume it is from when the referee calls for the physio rather than when they actually enter the pitch (of course they should be pretty much the same moment).

With the dissent being an automatic yellow card, it is noteworthy that their player was seeing red even if he hadn't been booked for the foul itself as he kicked the ball away.

Don't forget the extra time in extra time . It was like 15 minutes in the end.

There must be some teams that are going to benefit from this - maybe extra fitness or players that specialise against fatigued teams. Could now be specialist subs that only get on after 90 minutes and still get 15 minutes.
Hate saying this - but injury time has been a weakness for us in the McK era. Can't remember us getting an injury time winner under him, but we've conceded a few late ones and lost points.

If the purpose of this new adherence to recording stoppages more accurately, and have more genuine playing time, then I can see the only way this should be done fairly is as they do in Rugby, an official clock, that fans, managers, players are all aware of.

It's going to mess up the tv schedules. BBC News, Pointless, Strictly all waiting delayed in their studios for the overrunning football to finish.

That's the point I've made elsewhere.

There must be a significant psychological boost for a chasing team when they find out that they've actually got an additional 10-15mins to find an equaliser. Similarly, a winning team suddenly being told that they're going to have to hold out for an additional 15mins has got to be a real kick in the teeth.

If significant amounts of added time are going to be played (and I have no objection to the principle), we need to move to a rugby-style system whereby everyone knows at all times just how much longer is left in the game.

If most of the games this season are going to run to 100+ minutes then fitness & stamina are going to be key. This shouldn't be a new problem for our attack as we seem to bring on our 2nd attack wholesale after 70 minutes anyway. But our defence is going to need some resilience. Finding another experienced centre half feels more needed now. One who knows how to see out games or attack if we're behind. Easier said that done, but new options needed for this season's extended games.

Once again, its a move which benefits big clubs with big squads.
