The third tier is where worlds collide. You have the lovable Cinderella stories with non-league in their blood, and then the fallen giants that were once icons of the Barclaycard Premiership.

Although the traditional heavyweights have largely come out on top this season, the literal core of the EFL is set for a cracking climax at both ends of the table. Let’s take stock as we enter the final stretch.

Is it too soon for Sheffield Wednesday to panic? Less than three weeks ago, after beating Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park, Darren Moore’s side were top of the table, five points clear of Ipswich Town in third and with two games in hand on them and second-placed Plymouth Argyle. Having gone 22 games unbeaten and boasting the best defence in the league, a return to the Championship was in sight.

Wednesday, however, have stuttered in their past four games. The home draw with Bolton Wanderers was excusable, as was the late loss away to Barnsley four days later. But last Sunday’s defeat by Forest Green Rovers, the division’s basement-dwellers who had not won since December, was the first significant sign that Wednesday are feeling the pressure. Then, on Thursday night, they had to fight back from 2-0 down to rescue a point away to Cheltenham Town. Draw, loss, loss, draw. They are now only four points clear of Ipswich Town in third, having played a game more.

After last season’s play-off heartbreak, when Patrick Roberts’ last-gasp goal sent Sunderland to Wembley at Wednesday’s expense, they will be very wary of dropping into the post-season lottery – and ruining the prediction in our July preview that they would go up automatically.

The South Yorkshire club’s blip has allowed Plymouth Argyle to regain top spot. Steven Schumacher, in his first senior managerial role at 38, has put together a consistent side that can play glorious football. Argyle have not lost two games in a row all season, and responded to recent heavy defeats by Peterborough United and Barnsley with convincing wins. Finn Azaz, Ryan Hardie and Bali Mumba have been particularly pleasurable to watch, though Hardie is the only member of that trio not to be on loan.

Tuesday’s loss away to Exeter City meant Barnsley missed the chance to go level on points with Ipswich in third, but Michael Duff’s side have surged into the automatic-promotion race over the past two months. Prior to the defeat in Devon, Barnsley had won ten and drawn two of their past 12 games, including victories over the current top two.

We must not forget about Ipswich, who we predicted to challenge for automatic promotion but fall just short. Managed by Kieran McKenna, 36, the Suffolk outfit have won six straight games and have not conceded in seven, putting them right back in contention after a poor run at the turn of the year. Conor Chaplin, the former Barnsley forward, has shone at Portman Road.

Predictions:
Automatic promotion Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth
Play-offs Ipswich, Barnsley, Bolton, Peterborough
Relegation Oxford, Morecambe, Cambridge, Forest Green

So he’s basically predicated the same top two as now and us and Barnsley in the same positions as we are now. Hardly Mystic Meg stuff.

I don't see the logic behind tipping Oxford to go down. Similar run in to Accrington but with a game in hand, 2 additional points in the bag and a significantly better GD.

Final game of the season could be interesting between those 2.

They predicted, at start of the season, we would challenge for promotion but fall just short. Why admit you might be wrong if there is still a chance your original prediction could still be right.
