Oxford v Ipswich April 25th 1992 20:33 - Jan 20 with 2150 viewsgtsb1966

Need a better result tomorrow obviously but remember that day well. I hired the most gutless Ford Sierra and got to Oxford about midday. No beer as I was the driver for 4 others. Remember the alley to the stand. That was weird. Afterwards climbing over the fence and hurting my rollocks on the fence. Was in pain for ages. Got back to sudbury about 10pm and got absolutely smashed. TWTD

A victory would be our first league win in Oxford since beating Oxford City 4-1 in the Southern Amateur League in 1913. About time we won there really.

Remembering that day like it was yesterday.
We didn't play well, but just enough for the draw.
Our fans tried to climb the fence to get onto the pitch, then they just opened the gate and we all piled on anyway.
I was at the front of the crowd picture in EADT on the Monday morning. Headline of "Town fans invade pitch"
Was called in by the headteacher of the school i worked at to explain myself!

How many times have we played them away since though?

I remember being surprised how long it seemed to take to get there. A combination of my youthful geographical ignorance and being nervous about the game. Still annoyed we didn’t score at the away end, would have been amazing scenes. Getting over the fence (higher than it looked!) and being on the pitch to celebrate was fantastic. And dear ol Johnny Lyall telling us “we’ve had a lovely day, now go home.” Ended up back in town at the Blackadder and half the squad came in. “We are the champions” on the jukebox. Beautiful memories.

23 league games against Oxford United since then. That was our last match against Oxford City.

Sorry, that's wrong, that's the total league games we've played. Eleven league games away without a win at Oxford United.

The Manor was a dump but it had character.

The away end with no roof, the steps for the standing area being at different depths, some ludicrously wide then some you wouldn’t be able to stand on.

Oh and about 11 or 12 different stands.

I was in the home end that night as a fair few of my school friends were Oxford fans and we are local.

I’m at the game tomorrow as well so…

....halfway up their main stand celebrating.

An Oxford fan walked down the steps and pushed me and my mate off the wall onto the terracing below.

Somehow we both landed on our feet, escaping the seemingly inevitable broken ankles.

Despite the incredible dullness of this story, it's remained with me ever since.

Enduringly lovable, intelligent and thunderingly exquisite.

That was my favourite season. I was too young for Sir Bobby and was at Uni during the Burley years.
1991/92 I went to every home game bar one and only missed about 6 aways.

That week when he had Brighton at home after that, on the pitch again. Got a divot of turf that that day that I kept in a window box for years, then the civic reception on the sunday when they went around Ipswich in a open topped bus with a packed Cornhill.

Great day out.

Even their goal was scored by a future Ipswich legend.

Afterwards there was a junction near the ground that had scarf waving passengers of cars heading in every direction, reminded me a bit of one of the Pink Panther films.

Yep, went on the travel club coaches with about a dozen mates.

They got held up and didn’t get there until relatively late by their standards (about 2.30pm).

We got a spot right at the back of the terrace, and we could watch the local parks game going on in the park behind us at halftime.

As news filtered through that neither Leicester or Middlesbrough were winning, it dawned on us we were not only going up, but as champions, much to our relief after the wobbles against Sunderland, Bristol City and Grimsby in the previous weeks.

As we were at the back of the stand, by the time ee got anywhere near the front, the gates were already open, so we just strolled on.
Can remember ending up in the Main Stand, banging on the glass in front of the PA box when John Lyall was speaking, so didn’t hear a word he said.

Took a lump of the grass home with me, which I kept alive in an I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter tub for a number of years after.

Edit; also remember the journey home, the coaches in convoy and a car featuring Tony Swallow standing up through the sun-roof holding an ITFC Union Jack flag at 70mph.

Then encountering some Leicester fans at South Mimms who promptly got their scarf nicked and disconsolate West Ham fans who were on their way back from being relegated at Coventry.

We need, from today onwards, to show the form we did in the second half of 1991/92 season. We had 6 consecutive league wins from early/ mid January and another 5 consecutive wins in March.

We also got to 5th round of FA cup and were close to progressing further.
