4000 exoplanets passed 09:05 - Mar 24 with 886 viewsStokieBlue

The first was discovered in 1992 and at the time nobody knew how frequent they would be.

27 years later and we have just passed 4000 with another 3000 candidates likely to be confirmed.

Essentially, planets are everywhere and that's a nice high value to stick in the Drake equation.

I read that we are not yet advanced enough to identify alien communications.
There is probably an invitation to afternoon tea sat on our laps right now but we'd not know.

or

A race of sentient beings have been sending us ideas on Brexit/avoiding relegation/(enter problem here) and we've just not heard them. Damn!

Science is so cool.
Have to read Richard Dawkins compilation Science in the Soul? Really interesting.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Or... The Fermi paradox is accurate and Brian Cox talks sense when he says we are likely the only intelligent life in the Milky Way?

It is rather exciting and beats the pants of religion.

There are many reasons why the Fermi paradox may not hold.

For instance, do you usually invite your resident ants over to dinner and discuss the days politics with them?

There is also the option that it's completely true and hardly any species make it through the great filters. If we have then we have an even greater responsibility not to screw things up.

The first one is an unknown unknown. How can we know if we are advanced enough or not? If they are using radio waves we certainly could identify them, the same with other forms of radiation. Whether we could understand them is totally different. It took knowing two other languages for comparison to decode hieroglyphics.

The Selfish Gene is an excellent book but Dawkins has gone rather odd recently.
