He believed he was Christ incarnate.

Does that make him better or worse than a Jehovah's Witness?

Who was the loon on here who used to argue that not only should he be freed but never been convicted in the first place?

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

"Who was the loon on here...?"

Congratulations on narrowing it down a tad.

Yeah, at least he's ruled me out.

Pazelle was very keen on him, mainly as a counter-culture icon (which Manson never really was).

To be fair, the conviction was slightly tenuous in law (most of the evidence came from the killers themselves, who were cooperating with the courts in exchange for leniency), tho not in spirit (the organisation/cult he set up, led and controlled was resposible for the murders).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

And I believe Manson did not personally take part in the horrific 1969 murders, giving a potential get-out.

The conviction turned on whether he had, directly or implicitly, ordered the killings. All the evidence for that coming from people themselves involved (plus inferences drawn from his own written meanderings).

Manson had to be convicted - Nixon had declared him guilty early in the trial (which should have meant a mis-trial). Cue Bugliosi's crazy 'helter skelter' theory based loosely on Krishnaventi (who thought he was Jesus and had orgies nearby in California a few decades earlier) and The Beatles' White Album. Offer immunity from prosecution or straight-up cash for manufactured testimony from other people at Spahn Ranch and Bob's your proverbial. Linda Kasabian had just had a child and was offered a 'lie or die' deal - she was heading for the death penalty if she didn't comply...

There was no defence phase to the trial either, Manson was denied his constitutional right to represent himself, and Charles Watson (the guy who killed everyone) wasn't even present!
