Major, for the Northern Ireland Peace Process. Pre 9/11 and the Iraq madness, Blair would have had it in the bag. But every amputee ex-service man or woman from that war is a visible icon of his legacy. We don't get to see many pictures of orphaned Iraqi children any more: the news agenda has moved on.

Why are people proud of our surrender to the IRA?

Because it wasn't a surrender? The key is in the word 'process' and as far as I can see it is still going on...just. Thatcher had people talking to Sinn Fein so you might as well include her in your condemnation. However, what she was doing appears to have been ineffectual and Major seems to more or less have swept it aside and replaced it with something that worked, Martin McGuinness being a key element to his strategy. And then, for a few people in the Republic that I know, Blair rode in on his white horse and got all the credit. All of this underplays the role of Senator George Mitchell of course.

I don't think we have 'surrendered' to the IRA. I think it was a victory for common sense in a conflict that could have dragged on forever and had largely ruined the place. NI is still part of the UK albeit with a devolved assembly and Dublin has given up its claim to the North.

You've hit the the nail on the head. It is indeed the word 'process' that fools people into thinking that it was anything but a surrender. But when only one side concedes, it's surrender.

Serious question to both you and Bankster - the Kurds in Iraq have just voted 92% (in a 73% turnout) for secession in a non-binding referendum but the UN, US, Turkey and most other nations did not want the poll to happen - so is it democratic? Edit: doh, forgot to post the link I had ready if you need a 'catch-up' on this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-41419633 [Post edited 28 Sep 2017 10:44]

With the DUP having a decisive role in UK politics and, I was in Northern Ireland last month and saw them, the union flags flying en masse alongside UVF flags I don't think you can say one side has conceded.

There isn't a united Ireland though is there? Seems to me that it was more a compromise than a surrender. I can see why that would still leave a bitter taste to many but surely the resultant (relative) peace is worth swallowing some pride for?

Peace is indeed the result of one side surrendering to the other. A united Ireland is well on its way.

It wasn't a surrender to the IRA. Quite the opposite in fact. The IRA were defeated militarily. They had been infiltrated by the security services so deeply that all trust between the provos had broken down. They couldn't function because they distrusted each other so much, fearing that their comrades in arms were informants for the security services. History, however, has been re written by the defeated and those who offered them support when they were carrying out their murderous campaign.
