Probably a silly question 07:36 - May 22 with 3020 viewsclive_baker

But do we still need a GB sticker on a car when driving in the EU? Seen some conflicting advice online and also seen it suggested that you only need it IF your number plate has a GB or England flag on it (would’ve thought it would be the other way around).

I think it differs in which country you’re driving to. In Ireland (Republic) you don’t, but I think in France you do.

I think you need a U.K. sticker rather than a GB one.

My car has a little Union flag and U.K. on the number plates, but if I ever do drive in Europe again I’ll take no chances, particularly with the French and Spanish, and slap a U.K. sticker on the rear window.

Legally yes, a UK sticker.

When I used the tunnel a couple of weeks ago I counted and around 50% of cars had stickers.

French police were not remotely bothered.

Can get one on fleabay for about £2.50

I'm lead to believe now that since Boris lead us into Brexit and out the otherside ,one of the stipulations that he agreed to was any UK driver travelling around the EU via automobile would have to wear the generic national costume of whichever country you were driving through at that time - saves any issue with having to purchase stickers , superb idea

You need a UK sticker
You probably already know but just incase, check what items you legally require to have when driving through each country, luminous jackets, breath test kits etc

You now have to fly a Red Ensign not less than 2ft by 3ft in size and shout at foreigners in English instead of speaking the local language.

I think we may have stumbled across a solution to the small boats crisis, insist that all such arrivals have to don our national costume.

That should sort the genuine asylum seekers from those abusing the system...

If your licence plate has GB on it you need to get a UK sticker. If you car is so new it has UK on it then you need nothing - though a UK sticker is a useful warning to continental drivers sitting on your rear bumper.

In some UK counties the police have started stopping cars with GB stickers as they might be holiday home owners who are not entitled to be in the country - and are therefore driving without valid insurance

I would count that as a Madeiran costume rather than Portuguese, even though........

I certainly wouldn't want a Ronaldo shirt.

I have half a white ensign that went to Gold Beach on DDay. Will that do, or would it upset the Germans?

Red? But isn't that the colour of the horrid old passports?! We need blue, good old British blue, like in our English flag! The EU would never have the good taste to have blue in their flag!!!

Yes - Driving in Spain I got pulled over for not having one.
I pointed out that I had GB and a small union flag on my number plate but the traffic cop explained that they were too small and that I needed a larger standard GB sticker.
Fortunately he let me drive off without a fine

GB now UK

Slightly left field but connected to the thread...I remember holidaying with Eurocamp with the family in Italy when the Heysel distaster happened and we were advised by the locals to remove our GB sticker from our car due to concerns over any kind of revenge attacks.
