It seems reasonable to expect improved outcomes from more spending. Optics are bad though. I bet he’s getting a grilling over using the word ‘hostile’. And of course it would be better if he was explicitly on the side of workers.

"In 2010 the NHS was the world's top rated health service." so that was at the end of the last labour government - and blair's government at that. what a testimony.

In 2010 the Netherlands was the world’s top rated health service. The UK came in at number one for efficiency. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10375877

Streeting was obviously trying to curry favour with Telegraph readers with his interview, but I think he's been had both in terms of the headline, and the latest article and headline. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/11/wes-streeting-accused-declaring- Not a good look when those in the NHS are under tremendous pressure, there is a recruitment crisis, and pay in the NHS has fallen dramatically in real terms. As Billy Bragg might have once sung "which side are Labour on?" [Post edited 11 Dec 2022 21:45]

I suspect that the BMA are dismayed that yet another empty suit with a narrow ideology is again pointing the finger at the people within the NHS. You can’t drive efficiency and targets to cut the NHS to the bone, admit that the staffing levels are lacking and then say healthcare professionals need to do better for their patients. Streeting should listen more.

Whatever the position, I am not sure politically that this is the time to be picking fights with any section of the NHS workforce. In any event, he says in the interview that people should be able to see doctors face to face, which to my mind seems to be blaming the GPs for the current problems, when it is a shortage of GPs that is the problem. The fact is that the more the medical profession is antagonised, the more newly qualified doctors in the UK will just up sticks and head off to places like Australia, or consultants will do more private work. Is this man a Tory in disguise? on 09:40 - Dec 12 with 1442 views | BlueRaider | There are changes needed, there are inefficiencies, for instance if you get referred to a specialist, who on seeing you decides that you need to see a different specialist, they have to send you back to your GP with a letter who then refers you on, which is just a waste of a valuable GP appointment. Also the tendency to still send letters, costly and slow, why not use email ? And these are just my experience

You can have all the efficiencies in the world, but fundamentally it is the number of doctors per capita that matters, and look how low down we are in the list near the end of the following article. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-most-physicians-per-capit [Post edited 12 Dec 2022 9:48]

Starmer has just doubled-down on Streeting's criticism. The issue I have with this, in particular, is that it mirrors the really nasty campaign the Mail has been running against GPs, which is designed to make it seem that is the doctors, rather than the government, which are responsible for the crisis in the health service.
