Cricket today 13:39 - Aug 24 with 887 views | Nthsuffolkblue | A 3rd day pitch, 350 would normally be a par score would it not? It is only because we are so brittle and how much the ball/pitch have been doing that it is so daunting. If (and it is a big if) our openers could see off the new ball, this total is gettable. Most big totals need to be got on a fifth day pitch. This match will be over before the end of the 4th day whatever happens.

Is that because of the pitch, the conditions (they are genuinely better for batting now aren't they?), their attack or our woeful batting? I think it is the last part that makes it well below 350. We really need the opening pair to do really well.

Not going to get that opening partnership though are we? With Root at 3, it is all over now.

Not so much due to our frailty as seen in our 1st innings, just that 359 is a huge chase. For context, England's highest ever successful chase was against Australia in 1928, when we chased 332 at the MCG. We would need to better that record to win this test.

My point was more that most chases for big totals are on deteriorating pitches. In good batting conditions the total should not be immense. However, in the context of the scores of the match so far it is. As Hazelwood has just shown and as we knew before the start of the series, both sides have very good bowling attacks and brittle batting. Unfortunately, ours has been exceptionally brittle this match. Warner and Labouschagne have stepped up and more than adequately replaced Smith.

Cricket today on 14:57 - Aug 24 with 717 views | Coastalblue | Isn't the match total about 500 for 32 or similar? Expecting us to get even close to 200 is a huge ask. 180 to win and I think we'd still lose.

But I think that is more to do with two teams with strong bowling attacks and ordinary batting line ups. Maybe 350 is a bit much on this pitch but I think it looks even more massive because of our frailties and their strength. Even if these two now can see off the new ball and we can build an innings, there will be a second new ball to face with plenty more needed won't there? I think we should get around 200 but not confident we will.

Your original point was probably correct, unfortunately just not for this England batting line up against their attack. We are pathetic I'm afraid.
