Funny you should ask that, as interestingly enough James Macpherson, who played the trusted sidekick (and eventual leading character) DCI Jardine, actually applied to become a policeman in real life. He even got as far as an interview, but abruptly decided to abandon that path and take up acting because he simply felt he wasn't tough enough to be a copper.

The bee fly was adopted by Jim and Helen McManus of Blantyre, the parents of actor Mark McManus who played the role of DCI JIm Taggart. Oh wait a minute, that's not the bee fly, that's Brian Connolly who was the singer with glam rock band The Sweet.
