Yes, but *insert Guido smear about Jeremy Corbyn here*.

That's the Britain I recognise. Especially the bit about the Incapacity assessment, the selling of community assets, the short-sightedness of cutting spending in one area which caused bigger knock on problems and strains on budgets elsewhere, and the cripplingly crushing nature of it all which leaves a collective lethargy and depression.

It's an interesting article in that it didn't mention a race angle. Maybe in Liverpool the white working class haven't laid the blame at the door of immigrants and asylum seekers. Where I live many will tell you that Brexit was needed to stop the immigrants who are clogging up the NHS. The reality is that the local general hospital would have completely ground to a shuddering halt without the rising percentage of people born overseas at all levels of its workforce.

If you watch the two excellent BBC series Ambulance and Hospital, it's as plain as the nose on your face that the problems in the NHS are entirely down to the lack of social care for elderly people. This means colossal bed-blocking problems.

The aging population is a gigantic elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about.

To be fair to Blair and Brown, they did talk about it, and agreement to accession for Eastern European countries to the EU was partially given in the hope that immigration of young adults from those countries (who historically have higher birth-rates than British young adults) would be a solution.

The law of unintended consequences came into play, as it did with so many of Blair's solutions. See also PFI, Student Loans, Iraq.

Well, we did start it in North America, well before the USA existed.
