You'll never stop it. It has always been one price for cash and one for cheque etc. It may be wrong morally but I've never had a problem paying cash. Can't see many people paying their window cleaner by card either. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40561807

It's amusing to see the hypocrisy of people who will rage for companies like Starbucks and Amazon to pay tax that they are not required to, then turn a blind eye when paying the window cleaner, decorator or garage who illegally avoid paying VAT.

Conventional wisdom is the enemy of thought.

Your window cleaner does enough turnover to have to be VAT registered?!

I'm a window cleaner and get paid by various methods...cash...cheque and more recently bank transfer....makes no odds to me as I don't pay tax anyway....😊👍

It's absolutely ridiculous the number of 'self employed' people in this country. They're not self employed and should pay their NI like anyone else. The burden of proof should be on the employer to show they are not employees not on HMRC and also the Government were correct to raise NI for contractors although I personally think merging NI and income tax would get round this problem.

Wait, what? This thread started on VAT avoidance by sole traders who don't generally do enough turnover to have to charge VAT, now it's on NI avoidance by self employed? Is that even a thing? How do they dodge that?

Why pick on contractors? If they wanted to do this properly, the government should have ensured all U.K. company directors pay NI but of course that would be politically explosive so they (as usual) picked on the little fella.

Maybe they should try and get corporation tax off the big companies rather than worry that a window cleaner is getting a little bit of cash in hand for a low paid job - most of which will be spent back in the local community.

We had an invoice paid in cash the other day - an absolute pain as costs loads to pay it in so will have to use it for credit cards etc over then next few months until it dwindles away.

You are forgetting that what you criticise has been tory policy since 2010 to get 'unemploynment' down & enable them to boast that we have record numbers of people employed. This is number fiddling but it has served its purpose to make headlines for the mail Telegraph etc.

The employer doesn't want to have 'employees' and takes advantage of the tories 'flexible' employment policies so as to NOT pay decent wages or N.I.

The irony is that the tory governemtn of the 80's tried a lot of things to prevent what is happening now - but they failed when people stopped being self employed and became one man Ltd Co's

I imagine the cash in hand economy keeps a lot of families afloat. But of course what this is really about is the Govt having yet more tracking over your life.

Why do you assume that self employed people don't pay NI? There's just a different 'class' of NI to pay, and if at the end of the year there's additional tax and NI to pay, you pay it, just like anyone else.

Rebecca Long-Bailey (shadow business secretary) has today said it's "morally wrong" to use Uber.

Seems to be a phrase being used a lot in the last day or two.

In that case she is an idiot. With statements like this it surprises me that Labour are managing to do so well at presenting themselves as in touch and down with the kids. They're a bunch of self-righteous, well healed, radical champagne socialists. they're all loaded so paying double the price of an Uber for a black cab means nothing to them. they have no thought to the working man who may not be able to afford to worry about whether using Uber is 'morally wrong'.

According to the Land Registry 2016 was a racord year for Cash transactions in house selling / buying which only goes to prove the black economy is alive and kicking

Well to be fair the kind of people who buy houses or land for cash are not the people I am talking about, it was more the plumbers sparkies chippies and gardeners who take cash and fly under the radar.

Champagne Socialist is such a stupid phrase if you think about it for more than 2 seconds. What are you saying here, that people are voting for and encouraging political policies that wont benefit them directly because they are well off? How silly of them!!11!!!!

Just saying they are loaded so don't understand working people. Just like to be seen as left wing so they can be all self righteous and think they are better than everyone else.

There are a lot of 'builders' who cheat the VAT man.
Many who used to be firms have split and now work as one man bands (Altogether) to keep below the VAT threshold. Some even have several businesses so they can work and not charge VAT
They give you a number to go to the merchants so they don't have to charge for materials either.

Some even work up to the VAT threshold then go off on holiday

It's all happening which is why getting a reliable builder is more difficult than ever
