Anyone with that surname would have been bullied at school....

And now he is taking his revenge on society by being a Conservative

Btw..... which one is Mr Smellie?

Both the males seem very badly dressed for a PCC Candidate, especially one from that lot

Nah, rural Anglia is as Tory as it gets. How else can you explain Therese Coffey getting elected?

Bullied at school? That depends what sort of school he went to and my guess is it wasn't the local comp.

Could be wrong - no doubt someone will correct me if he indeed is from a local council estate and a single parent family.

And Truss only redeems herself with the coat - which looks like it is covering up similar Chav light gear. I yearn for the days when candidates were one nation Conservatives dressed crisply and with some modicum of decorum...

The candidate stinks in my opinion.

Seriously though, this is the first election where I actually think I cannot be bothered to turn up. As much as past me would hate that. The PCCs are just so ... invisible, is that the word? Dunno.

You're not wrong. He comes from a military family and his dad had an obituary in the Telegraph.

His name brings to mind the Private Eye character Sir Herbert Gussett.

Odds on that his nickname at school was "Stinker".

You're not wrong. He comes from a military family and his dad had an obituary in the Telegraph.

His name brings to mind the Private Eye character Sir Herbert Gussett.

Talk of Sir Herbet Gussett also brings to mind the fictitious Private Eye school St Cakes, of which Wikipedia states the following.

St Cake's School is an imaginary public school, run by Mr R. J. Kipling (BA, Leicester). The headmaster's name is part of the joke regarding the name "St Cake's", in reference to Mr Kipling cakes. Articles featuring the school parody the "Court and Social" columns of The Times and The Daily Telegraph, and the traditions and customs of the public school system. The school's motto is Quis paget entrat (Who pays gets in), although variations on this arise from time to time, such as when the school decided to admit only the daughters of very rich Asian businessmen, and the motto became "All praise to the prophet, and death to the infidel". While the school's newsletters feature extraordinary and unlikely results and prizes, events such as speech days, founders' days, term dates and feast days are announced with topical themes, such as under-age drinking, drug abuse, obesity, celebrity culture, anti-social behaviour and cheating in exams. The school is sometimes referred to as "the Eton of the West Midlands", in reference to that area's relative lack of such schools.

It’s like a name out of Jeeves & Wooster.

Regardless of what school he went to I suspect he spent much of it with his head down a toilet.

I'll have you know that he's one of the Cromer Orpen-Smellies, as PG Woodhouse might have put it.

Tom Sharpe does a good line in names too. In just reading The Midden, which is making Oi larf and taking the edge of the four day hiatus.

Do you realise how pathetic most of you sound?

On this thread you cringeworthy bunch have criticised
his name
his clothes
his background

Not one of you has bothered to look at his policies.

What a sanctimonious bunch you all seem to be - and the funniest is that most of you think you are better people than the tories you seem to spend your lifetime abusing.

I'd hazard a guess that his policies would be "Stop The Boats".

They've been a complete waste of space, and virtually all are Tories, but with a salary and pension package of £101,000 (according to the latest accounts of the Norfolk PCC) it's nice work if you can get it, given the vast majority of councillors do not receive a salary.

Anyway, if you're concerned about mockery, I suggest you stay away from Private Eye.

Given he is supposed to be an expert marksman, it's possible to imagine they could also be "Shoot the Illegals".

My guess his policies are:
Stop the Boats
Cut Taxes, the NHS, Defence, Education, Transport, Justice System, police, border control, the Civil Service, Rate Support and his dog Stench’s coat for the summer.

I’m reminded of Blackadder 3:
Blackadder: There is one man who might just be the ace up our sleeve: a rather crusty, loud-mouthed ace named Sir Talbot Buxomly.

Prince George: Never heard of him.

Blackadder: That's hardly surprising, sir. Sir Talbot has the worst attendance record of any member of parliament. On the one occasion he did enter the House of Commons, he passed water in the Great Hall, and then passed out in the Speaker's Chair. But if we can get him to support us, then we are safe.

Prince George: What's he like?

Blackadder: Well, according to Who's Who, his interests include flogging servants, shooting poor people, and the extension of slavery to anyone who hasn't got a knighthood.

Prince George: Excellent! Sensible policies for a happier Britain.

He doesn't represent my area but I have had a look at the policies:

More bobbies on the beat
Target knife/drug-related/domestic abuse crime
Put victims first
Address issues that cause crime with a more holistic, multi-agency, approach.

All very worthy but all of which you would think would require additional money. And yet on funding his statement is:

"Money is the fuel that drives policing. Careful control of taxpayer’s money is needed to get the best value for money."

So if there is to be new money (unlikely), no statement about where this is coming from.
And if there is to be no new money, no statement on which current areas of policing (or other agency work) are to be sacrificed in order to focus on the 4 policy items.

Now I don't suppose for a moment that the basics of his statement would make him substantially different to a number of other candidtes for such a role up and down the country but for all the use his 4 objectives are, without a clear statement on the how (and especially the financial how), he might as well have put them on the side of a bus.
