No threat in the middle of the box 09:45 - Apr 11 with 1246 viewsbritbiker

Earlier in the season we scored loads of goals from cut back passes into the centre of the box. In the last month the crosses and cut backs are still coming into the box but seems to be behind the first attacker on the five yard area or too far in front of the next line of attack which appears to be just outside the area.

Everything around the penalty area is being cleared by the defence.

So many missed opportunities. Also, why hoof the ball up to Moore if there is no one either side of him to pick up the head downs.

First half last night was good but just seemed to run out of options second half.

Last night - Watford sat with 5 at the back and 2 pivots in front.

When balls are being cut back - you are looking at having to get the ball through a lot more players.....

I think the second half attacking performance went really away when Davis crossed two balls straight to their keeper from good positions. Never really recovered after that.

To elaborate further.

Earlier in the season we got in behind teams and the cut backs were to players oft running onto the ball with the defence also running towards their goal - almost counter attacking, if you like.

Last night - Watford made it very difficult to get in behind, so a fair few of those balls being cut back was going to player with a plethora of Watford defenders in front of them (Moore's shot wide being the possible exception).

Hence, it's much harder to score through a slew of players in this situation as opposed to earlier in the season.

On that though point, there was one which I didn't understand

Davis by the corner flag, crossed it,keeper caught it.. Moore was standing far post..

I know Davis is good, but he's never getting a cross from the corner to the far post without the keeper catching it

Watford setup not to lose and to frustrate - they always had at least one midfielder sitting in front of their back 5 which covered the gaps we have exploited well spo far this season.

In spite of this we managed to create 4-5 good chances ion the first half which on another day would have seen us 3 up at the break, was just one of those nights where the opposition keeper had a good night, and we were only around 7/10.

Still in our own hands, am taking that with 4 games to go - in my 40+ years of following Town have learned to stop thinking about what could have been.

Teams are showing a lot more respect now that they were in August/September/October time.

There was a spell where we'd regularly be 2-0, 3-0 or 3-1 up at half time. That's much less likely now due to the space we're being allowed. Plus we're suffering from not having the running power and pace of Hirst and Burns.

I know people are saying Boro have to win on Saturday but I still think they'll set up to be tight. They won't just play open and hope they can outscore us.

Cutbacks rely on there being enough space in the centre for the ball to reach the receiving player and for them to shoot. Teams packing the box with six or eight men ahead of the cross arriving (as both Norwich and Watford did) prevent that. Not easy to counter if the opposition refuse to commit many up the pitch.

Watford were doing a good job last night in preventing Davis breaking through on the left. Hutchinson is clever, but not outright pacey. Jackson is fast and aggressive, but not so accurate as Burns. But the key issue was when the ball did arrive in the centre, there were too many blockers and interceptors.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

And the one time it did open up without Watford defenders, we appeared to block it ourselves - such is life.

Yes there did seem to be a element of getting in each other way last night. Some of the passing first half was brilliant until the final pass.

Gutted second half when Hutch tricked his way past the last defender only to be cut down whilst on goal. Good yellow card from a Watford point of view.

We were poor in the wide areas last night. The few time we managed to get in behind it did happen we weren't clinical enough with the final ball. Hutchinson especially, did the hard work and then didn't find a teammate. Davis another one guilty of being wasteful, he looks bloomin knackered though.
The writing was on the wall when Taylor got on the end of one, only to smash it straight at Broadhead.
