Birders... 10:53 - Mar 17 with 980 views

I think I had a raven in the garden this morning (near Ipswich hospital). All black plumage and sturdy dark grey beak. Looked like a crow but much bigger, body size close to that of a chicken.

Would it be a raven?

Sounds like it. There are ravens in Suffolk. Look for wedge shaped tail in flight, and heavy beak.

Yes, rooks are same size as crows, if it was much bigger then you've got a raven.

Whatever you do don’t say where you live. A pair has bred in Suffolk for the first time since the 1800s and last years chicks, of which I think there were five, will be top targets for gamekeepers as they attempt to find a territory.

IF it was a raven the easiest way to tell is the massive bill. Carrion crows are quite large up close but have a much less business-like bill

The beak is the really distinctive thing for rooks. They also look a bit "tatty".
