Oof! Will be interesting to see if he keeps his seat as an independent. I expect the champagne socialist luvvies of Islington will keep him in.

Islington is the 35th most deprived local authority area in England (out of 316) and the fourth in London (out of 33). People need to stop repeating this media myth about it being a well-off area.

Ipswich is 92nd for comparison.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/01/17/rachel-reeves-hints-at-labour-ta

As the link may be paywalled, this is the introduction.

Rachel Reeves has hinted at tax cuts for top earners as the shadow chancellor attempts to recast Labour as the party of economic growth.

Ms Reeves vowed to ensure “success is celebrated” under a Labour government as she outlined ambitions to ease the burden of Rishi Sunak’s multi-year stealth tax raid on workers.

Speaking to The Telegraph at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, she said that lowering taxes on “working people” remains a priority, including those paying the highest 45p rate.

Ms Reeves said that freezing income tax thresholds in the face of rising inflation “has affected people paying the top rate of tax and the basic rate of tax, and both of those groups of people are working hard, but getting less every month in their pay packets.”

She added: “My instinct is to have lower taxes.”

Erm, she's right. All she's talking about is altering the tax bands in line with inflation.

Plus the champagne socialist’ insult is also a tad lame. Just because someone has money etc it does not mean that they automatically lack a social conscience or are Tories by default.

I blame Corbyn more or less completely for letting the Tories in and Brexit to happen, but your post is not fair for two reasons:

1) Islington isn't just populated by champagne socialist lovies - its also full of poverty - this lazy Tory stereotype really fcks me off tbh (no offence).
2) Corbyn is very popular with the less well off community in Islington, because he backs them up at a grassroots level and get involved. Like I said, I can't stand what he did or some of what he stands for, but credit where its due too. If he does stand and stay as MP, it'll be those bods who enable it.

Yeah, probably. The Tories are so hated that Labour could stick Putin in charge and still win it.

Taken in isolation there is something in what you say, but to talk about tax cuts when the public finances and public services are in such a state is just wrong.

As it is, Reeves has already accepted the Tory NI cut, which leaves a £9 billion hole in the public finances, and has said she would support the pre-election Sunak income tax cuts, which would leave an even bigger black hole, so to talk about further tax cuts is madness.

Why can't parties just be honest, and say the public finance are in a mess, so talk of tax cuts is out of the question? With such a strong poll lead, I am not sure it would damage Labour that much, and might even resonate with many and prove they have some backbone and principles.

Depressing isn't it. When all the options are so crap, you don't know who to vote for!

Here's a hint: don't vote for the party that has spent the last 14 years systematically destroying the country.

Because of the Tory NI cut, I'm getting about another £60 a month in my take home pay, after the inflation we've seen it is badly needed as everything has got so much more expensive.

Regardless of the state of public finances, you can't tell voters now that you are going to take away and reverse the first bit of respite they've had in a few years when for many the wolf is already at the door.

I'm not a low earner, but feel like one at times when I actually try and do anything or spend anything, the squeezed middle will vote with their wallets as well as their consciences

It's easier to cut taxes, under invest in public services and infrastructure, and then just blame your political opponents and immigrants for all of the problems.

Have to disagree there - if Corbyn were still in, the Tories would have a target to scare people with. Maybe Putin though, granted.

Also worth noting that taxes will have to rise substantially just to stay as we are (I.e no improvement to public services). Interest rates mean the cost of servicing our national debt is increasing, and inflation will increase the cost of providing services and infrastructure.

Labour will inherit a terrible mess.

Huge risk to our national security? More so than the bucket of excrement in a blonde wig that put the son of a Russian spy in the House of Lords? That's before we even get on to Theresa May restricting his security clearance when he was Foreign Secretary. In what way was Corbyn a bigger threat to national security than someone as dodgy as Johnson?

But this is the result of that £60 in your pocket, along with other tax cuts the Tories announced in November that Labour supported.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/23/jeremy-hunt-tax-cuts-austerity-m

The obsession this country has had with tax cuts these last 40 years certainly hasn't done the economy or public services any good.

I met a British friend from Paris just before Christmas whom I hadn't seen for some time.
My friend had last year a prostate operation within a very short period of time from diagnosis. He said French healthcare system was excellent and that he wouldn't touch the NHS with a bargepole.

France (like many countries) is a country where it is accepted across the political spectrum that high taxes are needed for decent public services.

You need to ask? His views on our nuclear deterrent and NATO membership are well known. I have no doubt he would have cancelled the Trident successor program leaving us without a nuclear deterrent beyond the life of Trident. He is anti-NATO too, at a time when the NATO alliance is needed more than ever. Didn't he once say he wouldn't retaliate with a nuclear strike if even if we were nuked? Let's not even begin with his dubious terror network connections around the world. I am sure MI5 have a nice fat file on him.
