There’s a circus in the town 21:35 - Dec 1 with 4565 viewsThe_Snake

With all the recent debate around the Carrow Road is falling down song it got me reminiscing about the Norwich songs of olde.

Must have been late 90’s but stand corrected and was along the lines of:

There’s a circus in the town, in the town
Bruce Rioch he’s a clown, he’s a clown
Aaaand Delia Smith well she’s a fudging slag
Norwich City going down, going down

Always thought that was a belter and would still scan with their current manager, assuming he’s still there in a fortnight.

Sorry for any offence caused.

Perhaps we could rework it to:

There’s a circus in the town, in the town
David Wagner he’s a clown, he’s a clown
Aaaand Delia Smith well she’s just very old
Norwich City going down, going down

Just put.. "Delia Smith is a man"... That will confuse the wokey fun police..

Yeah those idiots. It's a song ffs. At a game of football, get over it!

Yeah, snowflakes, if you ignore the entire context of wider society and how attitudes have changed there's absolutely nothing offensive or dickish about calling 80 year old women slags and whores.

Just like the songs about Jimmy Saville, the Ipswich murderer and Justin Fashanu.

Would you apply that logic to the Fashanu song? Seems like you're pretty much giving free reign to anything in a football ground.

If you wouldn't go up to her and say it doesn't that say everything about you/ the song then?

Seems really weird how the people making the most fuss are the ones wanting to hide in a crowd to sing something that's just a bit sh1t. The world's moved on.

Why we can't celebrate how great we are instead is beyond me. All the good moments last season were when we singing about us. I don't get this blubbing about it.

'I'm a coward as well as a bit of a dick' isn't they flex thinks it is, is it?

It's probably funny to a 12 year old, but grown men calling a woman in her 80's a "slag" or a "whore" is pretty vile imo.

To amplify this: her age isn't the main reason, though, is it?

Misogyny is low, shtty behaviour, even in jest.

But there is an extra context at Ipswich Town Football Club:

The Portman Road murders should have given everyone pause for thought about demeaning attitudes towards women, but particularly language which dehumanises and devalues sex workers.

It’s not about whether it causes offence to Delia Smith. She’s made it perfectly clear in recent interviews that she isn’t particularly bothered about the views of football fans on the terrace.

It’s about what type of person wants to call a woman in her 80’s a “slag” or a “whore”.

As if that wasn't enough reason to stop singing it, it's now exactly what some of the Norwich fans want. In their current predicament we should be vocal in praising her.
Of course, that will be far too nuanced for the hard of thinking who want to be big boys and sing rude words about old ladies.

Some of our fans suggesting it would be 'class' for both to sing the song really need a hard look at themselves. The thing we really don't want to see is a GC20 equivalent replacing the inept Delia and crew at the helm.

Surely it makes more sense, when we’re hosting them, to be singing there’s a circus in town?

Good point. I guess In that situation it makes sense.

I think to almost every home derby since the 90s and can never remember us singing that song at them.

Seriously it's a game of football not a local WI meeting where 75 yr old spinsters might find offence.

Some people hate the use of the F word, literally there would be 90% of women over 80 that would hate the use of the F word, so what we ban that too? Ban the F word inside football grounds in case 82 year old women find it offensive?

You people have lost all context.

Can you give a good reason to continue singing it? Beyond we have done in the past?

What's the appeal? Do you think it's funny, or clever? Do you not think there are areas that are best left in the past, yes even at football matches?

I see no reason to want to continue singing it, unless you feel it's some sort of affront to your personal freedom and right to say what you wish?

The context is a football match in a stadium from where young women were abducted and murdered.

The context is a crowd with many women of all ages in it.

The context is a Football Club which is trying to encourage girls and young women to develop a love for and play football at the highest level they possibly can.

Why do you need to shout women-hating and sex worker dehumanising things to enjoy a football match?

I’m not sure there’s much difference whether she’s 40 or 80. Making exceptions because of her age may if anything be worse. If there’s one thing feisty old ‘uns hate, it’s being pitied because of their age.

Classless though, no doubt there. And a bit weirdly obsessive. The only time I ever think about her is when we sing about her, and I’d rather not be reminded!
