Scoreboards - why? 20:06 - Dec 1 with 1610 viewsBrianTablet

Is there anything more pointless than a scoreboard at a football match?
Has anyone ever not known the score of a match?

Aside from various playersover the years, what else is completely redundant at matches?

Got to say I missed it on Wednesday, for the time not for the score.

Must be my memory but there have been times where I have forgotten and looking up to see it helps. 6-4 v Crewe springs to mind but other times where it has been a case of haven't we got more than 1 yet?

The reminder to sing "Come on you blues!" for a corner always used to be handy too!

Yes. We were convinced we had beaten Liverpool one nil in 2001 only to get back to the pub and discover at about 5.30 that Emile Bleedin' Heskey had equalised just after half time when we still necking our pints. I think that was the year the South Stand was being built and you couldn't see a scoreboard from the North Stand.

When I first started to go to PR in the mid-eighties I used to love the old electronic scoreboard on top of the NS. Especially when we scored and the graphic on it was a few digitised stickmen dancing.

Why wasn't it working on Wednesday? Broken? Switched off because of Sky?

I’m guessing you have never taken a child to a game then?

Also, not of the generation that the three dancing aliens were the most exciting thing ever.

I’m sure Phil revealed in his book that Tony Vaughan thought Town had won that game at Barnsley that finished 3-3 when we scored three in the last five minutes.

I've been obsessed with the 80s Town scoreboard for 40 years!

No idea why, but only the big screen was working on Wednesday

Indeed, but it was Simon Milton that revealed it!

The notorious FA cup game away to Bristol Rovers in the snow 1978. As a young lad I totally missed the fact that one of their goals was disallowed. When we got back on the coach, with the radio on, I declared that the beeb had got the score wrong at 2-2. I got a lot of stick on the way back home.

Thought the one at Rotherham last month was particularly pointless - not once did it show the score or even the time; just a string of local trade adverts...

but if it was just Sky why keep the bigger one in the corner thats more visible on the TV on ?

the graphics have changed on it once already this season, and it hasnt always shown subs either, plus it awarded Swansea a goal when Town scored, so its been a bit temperamental this season.

it could have been something as simple with Sky & extra police in the control booth for Millwall, they lost the spot where the person sits who presses the buttons for it, so they kept it switched off instead.

was annoying though as I use it to keep a check on match time, and you cant see the big screen properly from Sir Alf.
