Showing once again that VAR in English football really is ruining the game. Some bad decisions yet again.

It's an experiment that just hasn't worked in this country, for whatever reason.

It brings no benefit to football, and should be scrapped immediately, let's just go back to how things were, bemoaning bad refereeing decisions, but just accepting that this is what football is, and why it's the best sport in the world.

Poll: So what do we think will happen with MM and the Aston Villa job?

Goal line technology is good. Just use VAR for offside as it’s not subjective if they do grounded feet as opposed to armpit or flailing finger nail.

You would have thought if there was three components to the review the decision would be no goal.

Why? If all three were found to be ok!

Video review was in Rugby world cups long before. And look what happened in the final, that sport is now rueing its decision in close games the TMO actually detracts from and kills the genuine contest, where the most deft play for a try is rules out for something in the middle of a maul, and an unintended shoulder barge is a red

It absolutely sucks the life out of "the moment ".... line calls fine, everything else including offsides by appellant review adjudged by the match official on the screen, you get 1 per half but use it wisely or you lose it.

The central theme of Arteta's rant is "We put in all this hard work and the technology didn't overturn the goal" - which is not really the point of a decision review system. It's more blaming VAR for a defeat in which they failed to score.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

VAR is the single worst introduction to football in the history of the game, should be scrapped with only goal line technology retained.

Not only is it destroying the core theatrical component of the football fan experience, celebrating a goal, it has also become the dullest post-match talking point in the history of post-match talking points.

VAR has done zilch to enhance the beauty of the beautiful game, it's the equivalent of going to a cosmetic surgeon to turn yourself into The Elephant Man.

Fans of all clubs in all four divisions should unite and kick VAR out of football for good.

I never wanted it but VAR isn't the problem, it's the incompetent officials using it. Also quite worrying that O'Neil said he watched that penalty decision with the ref after the game and he still stuck to believing it was a foul!

Exactly. It was a correct decision. The problem is still human error, like it was without VAR, but whereas then the ref had to make a split decision before the game moved on, now there’s a painful wait that accentuates it all. If AI gets involved it will in theory make it quicker and more accurate

Agree, all you need is a couple of ex pro's viewing the decisions, to be honest a couple of Sunday League players right now would make better calls..

"worrying that O'Neil said he watched that penalty decision with the ref after the game and he still stuck to believing it was a foul!"

That is mind blowing, if anything the Sheff U player should have been booked for that!!

I can't agree with this. Whilst VAR is an aberration that should be consigned to history, the biggest issue with the game and decision making at the moment for me is ill-informed punditry and that's the ex pro's you speak of. They often don't seem to have read or understood the law changes (and frequently admit on air that they don't) and then perpetuate their 'opinion' which becomes pervasive on social media etc. Whatever the rights and wrongs, fans, players and managers need clarity and we're a long way off - in the studios and VAR bunker.

So true this. How often do we hear a handball "wasn't deliberate" or a "he's felt contact there and gone down"

Bang on.

It’s ridiculous that to main attraction and excitement in a game of football is a goal. We now find on occasions that you dont celebrate until told it ok to, even worse, we now have the opposite celebrate when it’s deemed ‘no goal’ because an armpit hair is offside.

Scrap it and spend the money on more training for match officials at every level.

The Luton goal today was reviewed fir a possible pen to Liverpool before they broke away and scored. So we could have had Luton fans celebrating a goal, VAR ruling it out and awarding a penalty, Liverpool fans celebrate penalty which is then saved. Luton fans celebrate but VAR says retake and scores, nobody knows what to celebrate at this stage. Every spontanious celebration has to be delayed. It's weird and we haven't even been there as fans yet.
