Prices rising by 8% on last year when at this point last year inflation was also sky high is not good news for anyone's pockets.

it's good news if interest rates peak lower and come down quicker. prices rising at 7% isn't in itself great. but you know that.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

That would be because inflation has remained high into this year. Economics not your strong point Herbs?

I think you're the one showing a lack of economic literacy here, describing inflation of 8% as being good for people's pockets.

If you're happy with your pockets being 7.9% smaller, then yes.

It's still 7.9% and food inflation is over double that at over 17%

On an economic level it basically means we will just get poorer a bit slower.

Inflation reducing to "only" 7.9% being a good thing is rather in "It's just a flesh wound!" territory.

Especially when wages haven't been keeping up for well over a decade. Although better the rate is dropping than rising. Grateful for small mercies and all that.

I'm sure one of TWTD's political correspondents will be along shortly to heap some praise on the blue teams efforts.

So, prices continue to rise. Despite the big drop in fuel costs compared with 12 months ago. Food inflation is still around 15%.
"Even" at 7% a year, prices double in 10 years.

Well it's better than the 10.9% it has been isn't it? It's going in the right direction was the point I was making.

Also important to note that this is due to global supply chains easing, and lower commodity prices (slowly) feeding through. Not due to any competence of our incumbent govt. I’m sure they’ll be trying to take credit though…

I think it's the BoE policies that have helped - although been a painful hit on your mortgage payments, they have eventually helped to drive down inflation.

Yeah fook the Tories, let's not forget Liz Truss's disastrous fiscal move that saw the pound tank to an all-time low.

In my opinion the impact of the interest rates haven’t hit that many consumers yet. As more and more fixed rate deals come to an end there’s going to be a lot of pain. We’ve merely kicked a recession down the road.

About £400/month mine will be going up next August (based on rates today). I’ll be coming off a 1.85% fixed. Bloody ridiculous.

Times like this (when we've seen sharp rises in certain prices, like fuel, which have then reversed a bit) it seems it would be good to look at inflation over a two year period rather than getting fixated on a one year timeline. By my calcs the two year rate is 18%.

Yes, that's more or less spot on. The compound inflation over a 2 year period is about 18%. But thankfully it's good news for the money in our pockets, according to witlessasfook.
