Lots of talk of the play offs. 12:27 - Feb 15 with 2004 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Scenario: Season finishes today, and we are in the play offs along with;

Bolton
Derby
Barnsley

Are we confident of making the final? Are we confident of going up?

Its all very well being in the play off positions, but the point of being in the play offs is winning them.

Our record in “must win” games is horrendous so I’d have little confidence. Of course, we have to reach the playoffs first…

Right this second, no. But we have 15 games now to get ourselves into some form and to gain some momentum.

Personally, I would prefer a 5th or 6th place finish, get the home leg out of the way first - hopefully with a win, but probably a draw - then all to play for in the away leg without the pressure of 28k nervous fans at PR.

The only scenario where.... on 13:06 - Feb 15 with 1779 viewsBloots

...we make the play offs is if the season finishes in March, we'll be out of the top 6 by April Fools Day.

We'll finish 7th.

No, there was something different about that season, after all the previous failures there was a determination from fans and players that this was our year.

Plus we had an exceptional team.

If we finish 3rd/4th and go into a home game against Wycombe or Barnsley with the scores level, I'm not sure we'd have enough to finish the job. Much better if the pressure is all on the opposition as the home team in the 2nd leg.

I never really understand this worry.

Play-off games are cup ties, fought out between teams the league table says are very similar in quality. There's no obvious straight line between being the best of the 4 teams either short term or long term and winning them.

They'll be 50/50 games settled by fine margins, team match-ups, random in-game events, whether the teams involved limp in or charge in.

Also for all of our shortcomings in not winning enough games we don't actually lose many.

I do agree about actually playing the home leg first.

I actually think we may have a bigger challenge making the PO's right now.

Lets hope things pick up.

In away games we’ve only beaten Exeter and Shrewsbury of the teams currently in the top 14, not sure being away from 28k Ipswich fans is much of an advantage.

And... in those circumstances, it may come down to penalties, so we'd be ok on that front...

Depends.

Bolton in the semis and Barnsley in the final would seem a good omen

Yes, we've lost a lot of play-off finals.

We lost after finishing 6th (2014-15), 5th (1997-98, 2003-04),4th (1996-97), 3rd (1998-99, 2004-05).

Play-offs are cup ties to between evenly matched teams, which makes them a lottery that you can win or lose regardless of where you finish in the league and what your form is going into them. Hence why we've lost play-off matches seemingly regardless of how good or bad the team was relative to the league.
