Not sure why you’ve posted a picture of Alex Neil, but back to Paul Taylor, he really was a dreadful signing in every way imaginable. Awful.

I thought it was around $1m, which at the time was £600-650k.....what I'd give for that exchange rate now!

Brexit (and the collapse of Sterling is 100% related to Brexit) has cost us about £500k. Well, I tell a lie because we put prices up to cover it but I would say that the effect of Brexit has cost us dearly. From memory I think you voted Brexit (I could be wrong) and I'm not one of those sad big girls blouses who harp on about it, in fact I understand some of the arguments - but, Kerroist!!! Are you still having problems with materials? Timber, plasterboard etc? We used to get a few bits from Germany but since we are not in the customs union anymore no fecker wants to take the job of bringing class 1 explosives over - last shipment from there was only 4 pallets and it cost us £4k in freight- £1000 a pallet!!!!!!!!

Brexit has really hurt us, I voted to Remain but main reasons were I didn't trust this Govt to do the sort of Brexit that I think could've been beneficial (i.e. lots of training, upskilling of UK people; 'UK Plc' doing big infra projects etc) but it turned out much much worse than could ever have hoped. Materials are much much more expensive, labour is much more expensive, getting hold of stuff is much more difficult - we are small enough as a firm to be a bit agile around it but it's not made anything easier for anyone

Crazy isn't it - absolutely nuts! Is your old man still running the business or has he retired? I thought about retiring and offered the business to my kids but but they didn't want to know - so I offered it to my son in law and he didn't want it either - so I'm stuck with it and have no exit plan.

No, I'm sure it was later reported at £250,000/£350,000, maybe when the club accounts came out the following year. Think Amir Karic which was reported as $1 million if that might have been coming to mind.

When we had that shop in Ipswich *** Amir Karic came in once and asked if he could get discount for being an Ipswich player. I didn't recognise him and asked who he was - he then simply shook his head and sighed. We had all the players used to come in, pretty much the whole team. Herman used to live down the road and came in for a chat now and then - as did Mrs Gardsoe for some reason - crazy times baby. I miss those simple days. *** I just remembered, we used to sell TWTD fanzines didn't we, we were an official stockist !

He is, was very ill through December and still not really back working as yet but name still above the door but I basically run it to be fair.....but happy with that at the moment and he's 64 now so will move over more officially at some point in next few years. Exit plans are so hard for small businesses

He was a great guy, I bumped into him in The Arcade Tavern a couple of years back. He was absolutely trollied and invited me and my droogs to his hotel in Iceland. Alun Armstrong was great, he was such a snappy dresser and a really nice guy. When he moved to Darlington I mentioned that I had recently driven past the stadium and I couldn't believe how fantastic the stadium was for such a small club, he then told me that he could have moved elsewhere for more money but he wanted to play every other week in a nice stadium so went there. Fabian Wilnes was my favourite, such a super guy, always chatted about his daughters and used to show me pictures of them at every opportunity. Halcyon days baby! I think pretty much every player used to come in except Martyn Reuser who was at the time the only person who has ever forced me to question my potential homosexualness.

Oh, please give him my regards, I haven't seen him for ages. Re exits - you would be fine because you have a mainstream business type. As for us, we're screwed because we are a specialised oddball - and it's blooming difficult, hence why no one wants it. Don't get me wrong, we do ok but there is so much legislation behind the scenes that I spend all day dealing with bureaucracy We are a tinpot business in the great scheme of things but looking to get up to £2m turnover this year - and still I can't give it away. On top of that, as you are fully aware, everytime you think you are doing ok The Man cometh and taketh away - and I have that corporation tax headache this month. All the people who think corporation tax should be higher quite obviously don't have to pay it! Moan moan moan. [Post edited 12 Jan 2023 10:36]

Our biggest problem is bureaucracy - there is so much admin for us as a small company to do and it's basically the same as a company 10x our size. As an example - if I have an electrician do some work for me and they charge me £1,200 + VAT.....I have to get them to breakdown how much of that £1,200 is labour and how much is materials.....I then have to verify them with HMRC to see how much tax they pay on Labour (normally 20% but sometimes 30%) and then I have to hold that back from the electrician. I now also have to hold the VAT back from the electrician. We then have to collate all our subcontractors records like this every month, submit it all to HMRC and then send all the 20 and 30%s we have collected over the month. We have to add all the VAT's we have retained into our quarterly VAT report as well and send all that over. So we have to retain so much money that isn't ours which messes with our cashflow, do so much admin, and then send stonking great payments to the man every month and every quarter. That alongside a million other things, is it all worth it?

£1.5 million I reported at the time. Think the club felt they'd got a bit of a bargain. Chopra Deal Done 10th Jun 2011 15:25Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra has completed his £1.5 million move to the Blues, signing a three-year deal. 153

Oh and I forgot - we have HSE licensed storage for 50,000 kilos of class 1 explosives. Can you imagine the hassle - and the bastards charge me £300 an hour every time they come down for an unannounced inspection. That puts a few electricians bills into perspective

Our record signings on 12:24 - Jan 12 with 1333 views | ElephantintheRoom | Clearly Marcus Evans was much more committed to Ipswich Town than the current mob - there are quite a few ‘statement signings’ there. I suspect any signings for ever more will now be either ‘undisclosed’ or pure speculation.

We have a problem that we go from doing loads of pub work, to then building new houses. So our VAT bill can be massive for 3/4s in a row, and then for the next 3 we are claiming back off the taxman - every time this happens guess what comes next.....an inspection. Where they have to find something or they must get a telling off back at the office. One time we needed some info on CIL status re listed buildings, phoned them up and they sent us info on fine wine and art.......a few months later we had an inspection and during the few days of it we asked what had triggered it and it turned out "HMRC didn't understand why a builder was finding out about fine wine and art"..... It does feel like small businesses get continually hammered

It certainly feels like there is some mechanism in place to ensure every small business is constantly nervous and worrying about money. our VAT bill for last quarter was £87,000!!!! It's so worrying - the bigger you get the easier it is to go under - and at the same time everyone is in the same boat so getting paid on time is a continuous problem. We pay everything on the nail and have to pre pay in China these days because they are well skint - but at anytime we have around £200k of overdue invoices owed to us. Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off driving for Amazon
