I’m in Qatar at the World Cup - AMA 09:04 - Nov 23 with 5526 viewsJakeITFC

Currently sat in the stands waiting for Croatia v Morocco with a bit of time to kill so thought I’d do a Reddit style thread where I’ll try and answer any questions people have on what it’s like out here if of any interest to anyone.

Have been here since Saturday so hopefully be able to provide a little bit of insight outside of the main media reporting.

For me thankfully no, but have seen plenty who have. Ticket app works similarly to the nations league in Portugal - download the tickets to an app and then they are activated by Bluetooth near the ground (think some music venues have similar too). I saw some people refreshing the app outside the England v Iran game to get the Bluetooth thing to work and all of their tickets went missing.

Was a bit of a mess getting in but I think the vast majority of England fans were in for the anthems.

Cool.

Are you staying in the fan park?
Are you one of the group being paid to be there and being positive about the experience?
What games have you got tickets for?

I’m advised porn is illegal, but not really sure how that’s policed.

One thing you can say is that the beer is served very cold - seems to be Heineken and Budweiser in almost every bar I’ve been to so far.

No I’m staying in a hotel/hostel in the city centre, near the historic centre. Really cool mix of nationalities, lots of Brazilians taking great pleasure in the Argentina result yesterday.

Nope, nobody has paid me to be here unfortunately. I would say that everybody here is generally very positive about it though - it’s hot, there’s loads of football on and none of the scare stories from beforehand have come true as of yet.

I’ve been to England v Iran and France v Australia so far, with Croatia v Morocco now, Belgium v Canada tonight, Uruguay v South Korea tomorrow and England v USA Friday as it stands.

Did you buy the match tickets prior to going out there? Or just grabbing them at ease whilst your there?

I’m heading home on Sunday - my thoughts beforehand were that if we had a deep run I’d prefer to be in England for it but kind of regret that now as think it will be cool here too.

Yeah bought them all beforehand - England via the FA as I’m a member, the others via the Fifa portal.

I thought it would be much easier to get tickets out here than it is tbh - there’s an annoying amount of empty seats at a lot of games that don’t seem to be easily available to buy any where.

By the sound of it, you're having a great time out there which is good to hear.

Have you met or bumped into any other Town fans so far?

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Is the stewarding officious or pretty laid back? I saw a fan being told to sit down when celebrating an England goal - is that typical or not?

Sounds like you're having a good time.

The atmosphere for Iran v England seemed very flat on TV, was it the same there? Hardly heard the England fans.

I’m staying with a couple of Ipswich fans, mates of mine. I know of a couple of others out here but haven’t bumped into them yet.

England very much outnumbered in terms of support - seems to be loads of Welsh here, the other European teams also quite thin on the ground and then tons of South Americans, Mexicans and the Arab/North African nations also very well supported.

The main England bit was stood for the whole game on Monday, they seemed pretty ok with that as long as you weren’t stood on the stairs.

I was basically in the same spot in the middle of the Aussie fans yesterday (row G) and was stunned when they all sat down when the game kicked off.

Was quite loud at times in amongst the England fans, but there was probably only about 3,000 of us in that section and it was a bit of an open bowl which didn’t make for a great atmosphere. Expect the game on Friday will be better as in Al Bayt which is a better stadium and also the USA fans will sing stuff too.

France v Australia atmosphere yesterday was like a pre-season friendly, absolute dross. Hoping this game will be better as loads of Moroccans in.

USA will sing some stuff? They've only just mastered the words to USA USA. I hate that chant.

How's the food, don't get much chance for Middle Eastern food here, it's something I love but can't get.

Yeah but at least that’s a chant of sorts! Most other teams don’t seem to be able to manage that.

Food is good - local stuff better and cheaper, but they also seem to have all of the Uk and American brands in the malls.

Certainly did seem to be a very large number of Mexico fans at that game yesterday, is that purely fans visiting or a lot of mexicans working there? I know years ago when I spent some time in Bahrain there was a lot of mexicans working there.
