Keogh and aging defenders 13:40 - Aug 9 with 1900 viewsbaxterbasics

Trying to think of any other defenders who've been brought in at the twilight of their career and done a decent job for us.

There was Unsworth, though he was a sprightly 32.

How about Mowbray & Wark?

Warky still played 14 times for us the season he was 38/39.

Matt Elliott had a great loan spell coming in in the twilight of his career.

James Collins looked decent but hampered by injuries.
As other say Unsworth for sure.

Still one of the top 5 loans we have ever had.
And yeah Baxter Unsworth was great too. Shame he couldn’t play in the West Ham game….!

Venus was 30, Mowbray 31. Big difference.

Mogga was only 31? I know he's always looked 50+ but that seems totally wrong for some reason.

Phil's shout of Eliot is always the one that comes to mind.

John Scales. Don't think he ever started a leagur game at Portman Road.

Stephen Taylor and St Ledger were lesser successful entries too weren't they?

Brian Gayle although not sure he was old when we signed him, just had a craggy old face. Good player when he wasn’t injured.

Mowbray was 36 when he retired after the play-off final. I think I read Keogh is 36 this week.

Although fitness in football has moved on a long way since they were at that age, so nowhere near the difference it once would have been considered.

From memory both Stephen Taylor and James Collins looked awesome for us for a handful of games before inevitably succumbing to their pre-existing long term injuries.

Edit: Collins was 35 when he joined, Taylor ‘only’ 31. I’m not sure Keogh can have much left in the tank at 36 having sustained serious ligament injuries to both knees.

We sold him to Sheff Utd if memory serves me right.

Would be a good quiz question; how many days between Warky’s first and last Town appearance.

Sure, and it depends on the individual. Wayne Rooney is burnt out at 31, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo or even Jamie Vardy are still premier league class at 35+.

I'm not really against this signing, it's pretty low risk, if Keogh flops he'll just move on, whereas if we sign a marque striker on a 5-year-deal and he flops it's more significant.

It was Matt Elliott I was struggling to remember!

Wiki tells me he only played ten games for us, then retired not long after. Remember him being handy though.

He came in towards the end of the season to try and shore us up?

Unsworth I think then went to Wigan and Sheffield United, playing further Premier League games so still had plenty in the tank
